Peanut butter: come on, chunky rules! No favorite brand, though.
Bread: personally, I like bakery pumpernickel and rye
Steak: medium, sometimes rare. I was a vegetarian for a couple of years back in the day, but unfortunately I caved because bacon smelled so good, lol.
Ice Cream: Edy’s Butter Pecan.
Sleep habits Morning or evening person? Definitely more an AM person.
Tummy, back or side sleeper? All of them (when I actually sleep).
Need an alarm or wake up on own? Don’t need an alarm; that’s what Bailey, my Lab, is for.
Movies Flashdance or Footloose? Flashdance - the cheese level is astronomical!
Star Wars or Star Trek? Argh - do I have to choose? BTW, how many of you out there are old enough to have seen all of them in their first releases?
Subtitles or dubbing? Subtitles
Comedy, drama or documentary? Documentaries these days.
Popular Music Classic soul or hip hop? Classic soul.
Hair band or grunge? I actually like both genres, but love the cheese factor of the 80s hair bands.
CDs or MP3s? I haven’t listened to a CD in who knows how long. Oh wait, I think I listened to a CD in my car in the last month.
Favorite Cereal: good Pam: Total, with or without raisins; bad Pam: Lucky Charms - magically delicious!
Seafood: catfish or shrimp, calabash style. There’s no point in seafood without hush puppies if you’re a Southerner.
Hot Drink: no coffee; English breakfast tea with half and half plus Splenda.
Soda: Sprite Zero, but must have Diet Coke with pizza.
Crackers: Club cracker, regular flavor Goldfish.
Books: mostly political books (usually reading more than one at a time); haven’t read a novel in a long while.
Peanut butter: Creamy, all the way
Bread: white or wheat? Wheat for toast, white for sandwiches
Steak? Medium-well. No blood, in my dinner please; I don’t suffer from anemia
Ice Cream: coffee royale (coffee with a fudge swirl)
Sleep habits
Morning or evening person? Closer to evening, I guess, but I do still try to get to bed early, so I’m not really good at being either
Tummy, back or side sleeper? Side. And almost always the same side, too (left)
Need an alarm or wake up on own? Can’t deal without an alarm, but I often wake up before it, convinced that I forgot to set it or I missed it going off
Movies
Flashdance or Footloose? Footloose - kevin bacon can actually dance!
Star Wars or Star Trek? Star Wars IV-VI, then TNG, then TOS, then Star Wars I-III, Voyager…what do you mean the question wasn’t that specific?
Subtitles or dubbing? No opinion
Comedy, drama or documentary? Documentary
Popular Music
Classic soul or hip hop? Um…classic *rock*, thanks
Hair band or grunge? hair!
CDs or MP3s? mp3s
Additional categories from readers…
Favorite Cereal? Cinnamon Life (to munch out of baggies)
Seafood? Hate fish
Hot Drink? Chai
Soda? Eh, mostly whatever
Crackers? I like plain old saltines, actually
Books? Yes. All of them, thanks.
Peanut butter: Yes
Bread: Yes
Steak: Medium-rare
Ice cream: Yes
Sleep: Yes, morning or evening, on my tummy, back or side, or in the car, or on the floor. In other words, just how I used to have sex. No alarm. Kids explain everything in the first through third sentences.
Flashdance or Footloose: Neither
Star Wars or Star Trek: Both
Subtitles
Comedy, Drama or Documentary: Yes
Cereal: Grape-Nuts
Seafood: Shrimp cooked gently in much olive oil and garlic, little lemon, chopped parsley, with crusty bread
Hot drink: A good cappucino, a great hot chocolate, a decent chai
Soda: Ginger beer or good good cream soda
Crackers: Only when cheese is involved
Books: Deeply fond of the mysteries of Reginald Hill, despite any faults he may have. However, Saki can still make me giggle.
Peanut butter: Creamy and organic
Bread: Italian sandwich bread, preferably with poppy seeds
Steak: When I ate it, medium rare. Haven’t had one in months.
Ice Cream: Cherry Garcia, with Chunky Monkey and the Cinnamon Oatmeal Cookie coming in a close second
Skipping most of the others, but books:reading a lot of poetry or classes I’m teaching, plus the new bio of Louis Zukofsky The Poem of a Life.
Peanut butter: Creamy, although I might like chunky. A lot of stuff I assumed I would hate as a kid, and then i end up eating as an adult I end up actually liking.
Bread: Wheat
Steak: medium rare.
Morning or evening person: For the longest time I’d stay up until 4:00 in the morning, although recently I’ve been getting up at about 8:00 in the morning, so my sleep time has been pushed back.
Sleep: Side sleeper. I can’t sleep on my back, and sleeping on your stomach is apparently bad for you.
For alarms, when I would stay up at 4:00 I kind of became immune to the alarm, completely forgetting important meetings because I either sleep through it or hit “snooze” way past what is acceptable. (Sleepy time logic; “Oh, I don’t need to take my final, I’d much rather have this four extra hours of sleep) Currently I get up shortly before the alarm gets off.
Movies
I’ve seen neither Flashdance or Footloose.
Star Trek: TOS is the only one I care about, and even then it;s because of my love for classic TV as opposed to some type of nerd factor.
Subtitles. Even for english films. IRL if I can’t see someone’s lips when they are talking to me, I can’t understand what they say…same with movies.
Comedy
Popular Music
hip hop
I don’t like Hair bands or grunge that much, but if I had to choose, I’d say grunge.
I like CDs, but since all of my albums are in an inconvenient place in my apartment, I just use MP3.
Favorite Cereal: Cracklin Oat Bran. I loved it ever since I was a little kid.
Soda: Vanilla [Insert any brand of soda here]
Crackers. No, NO NO CRACKERS.
Books: Flannery O’ Connor is my all-time favorite author. I swear by her.
Even though I’m still reading it, the Illuminatus Trilogy is in the top three books. It is identical to my mixed feelings about the 1960’s counter-culture movement.
John Swartzwelder’s the Time Machine Did It is a pretty shallow book, but it’s addictive. I read it at least 5 times.
Movie: Josie and the Pussy Cats
TV Show: House, The Wire, Angel/Buffy/Firefly.
Angel especially. I dismissed it the first time out, but watching it again, it is a pretty powerful series. I like that it managed to keep a consistent exploration of the theme of “Redemption is impossible to achieve” throughout the entire series. With the exception of The Wire, I can’t think of any other series that managed to hold on to their core narrative for the entire run.
Peanut butter: Creamy, all the way

Favorite Cereal? Cinnamon Life (to munch out of baggies)
Seafood? Hate fish
Hot Drink? Chai
Soda? Eh, mostly whatever
Crackers? I like plain old saltines, actually
Books? Yes. All of them, thanks.
Peanut Butter: Creamy
Bread: Wheat, sourdough sometimes
Steak: Medium-rare to rare
Ice Cream: Mint Cookie or Chocolate
Sleep Habits: Definitely an evening person. I hate seeing the sun rise. Normally tummy, but I snore in that position and also share a bed… so it ends up being on my side. And I generally need an alarm, though once it goes off I’m wide awake almost immediately.
Movies: Neither Flashdance nor Footloose, please. I guess I’d have to choose Star Trek over Star Wars. Subtitles. I don’t care so much about movie genres–anything that’s good to me.
Popular Music: Out of those listed above, Grunge. But I normally listen to industrial, metal, techno, some prog. rock, and various others. CDs and MP3s.
Cereal: I don’t really like cereal much anymore, but when I do eat it I like Honey Bunches of Oats.
Seafood: I also don’t eat seafood much either. Any whitefish is ok, and tuna steaks are pretty good too. Other than that, nothing.
Hot Drink: Hot chocolate. Don’t drink coffee or tea.
Soda: My favorite is probably Mountain Dew, but I’m staying away from soda as much as possible.
Crackers: I don’t have a favorite cracker.
Books: A big mix of fiction and non-. I’ve been getting into the darker sci-fi and fantasy area lately, with Alastair Reynolds and China Mieville. Non-fiction is typically political, social, or economic in nature.
Peanut butter: crunchy all the way
Bread: depends on the sandwich. I feel a subtle tasting bread is needed for turkey, like sourdough or honey wheat, but there’s nothing like pastrami or corned beef on rye.
Steak: Medium rare to rare. I love ribeye.
Ice Cream: Strawberry is my favorite generic flavor, and most Ben & Jerry’s are of course great.
Sleep:
I tend to sleep by my side, my dog on bed with me. He’s very patient and won’t get up until I do unless there’s something wrong with his stomach, so he doesn’t work as an alarm clock.
As far as books I’m currently reading the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Before that I was reading from Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins murder mysteries, but I need to find a new copy of Black Betty before I can resume those.
Peanut butter: chunky
Bread: wheat
Steak: no meat
Ice Cream: vanilla
Sleep habits
Morning person
Back sleeper, much to Molly’s chagrin, who would like to sleep between my butt and knees while I lay on my side.
Wake up on my own most of the time lately.
Movies
Subtitles.
Comedy, usually.
Popular Music
Classic soul or hip hop—both, none, all, depends on the artist.
Grunge.
I have CDs, MP3s, and vinyl. My new goal is to buy most everything new I can on vinyl, because it really does sound better.
Favorite Cereal?
Cinnamon Life.
Seafood?
Catfish tacos.
Hot Drink?
Coffee.
Soda?
Diet Dr. Pepper.
Books?
See the insane “Pandagon Recommends” Amazon ad.
Peanut butter: Crunchy unsalted
Bread: Wheat (preferably honey-wheat)
Steak: Very, very rare
Ice cream: Vanilla, flavored with toppings.
Sleep habits: I’d normally be a “technically a morning person”, since I tend to be at my best in the midnight-3AM timeframe, but that’s not compatible with chiildren. I sleep on my back. If I’m well-rested I wake up on my own; normally it takes an alarm and lots of caffeine.
Movies: Star Trek, at its best. Never seen either Flashdance or Footloose. Ideally, good subtitled animé.
Books: Yes. Gendre fantasy, sci-fi, or mystery, or nonfiction (usually textbooks).
Soda: Mexican coca-cola, or Bubble-up.
Seafood: YES!!!!!!!!
Video games: RPGs, or puzzlers. Ideal games are Katamari series, Suikoden, or any Zelda game.
And like Pam, I mostly read political books lately. And the insane pile of books I have to read keeps growing, so I’m going to go do that now.
Peanut butter: chunky, but rarely
Bread: most kinds, but not carraway rye
Steak: medium
Ice Cream: love it. flavors with chocolate and/or caramel are favs.
Morning or evening person? Night owl.
Tummy, back or side sleeper? Side, with a body pillow
Need an alarm or wake up on own? Depends on when I need to be awake.
Flashdance or Footloose? None of the above.
Star Wars or Star Trek? Wars.
Subtitles or dubbing? Subtitles.
Comedy, drama or documentary? Drama, action, comedy, documentary, in that order.
Classic soul or hip hop? Some hip hop.
Hair band or grunge? Why do I have to choose? Love both.
CDs or MP3s? I am way behind the times. My car still has a tape deck. CDs in my dwelling.
Favorite Cereal? Raisin bran.
Seafood? Yes please. Shrimp, scallops, and crab especially (but please not whole crab legs, way too much work for my dinner).
Hot Drink? Tea or chocolate.
Soda? Diet Coke, Blenheim’s ginger ale, other ginger ales.
Crackers? Rarely. Saltines crumbled over a bowl of chili are good though.
Books? Cases filled to overflowing. Mostly sci-fi/fantasy, with a smattering of other fiction and political/philosophy non-fiction and cook books. Chemistry and related books for profesional purposes.
Peanut butter: Creamy, always creamy. Current favorite is Jif w/ Honey
Bread:Wheat, plus I play the game of trying to find “soft” wheat with whole grains and the most fiber/slice. 1-2 g of fiber? That’s not bread.
Steak: Don’t eat red meat. Made the decision for health reasons, but had an occasional bacon cheeseburger for years. Then after going completely free for 3 years, had a steak at a Labor Day picnic b/c, you know, it wasn’t a philosophical aversion. I blew up like a ballon–added 4 inches to my waist and farted for 3 days. I no longer posess the proper bacteria to digest red meat. I give it a wide bearth and much respect.
Ice Cream: vanilla is always good. but add fudge and carmel and it’s even better. Cherry Chocolate Chip. The impossible to find “Doonesberry” BnJ’s flavor.
Morning or evening person? I was a night person until I had kids. No matter what, they wake up before 6. Occasionally I suffer from insomnia as my body tries to “correct” my timetable and get me back on “night owl time”. I look forward to when the kids are teens and sleep all the time.
Tummy, back or side sleeper? Side, with my tempur-pedic pillow. If I ever have a lot of money, I’m getting the entire tempur*pedic bed.
Need an alarm or wake up on own? Used to snooze repeatedly. Then I married a man who refuses to use alarms b/c if he can’t wake up on his own, he still needs sleep. Then the kids became alarms for me. I can stay into bed till 7 somedays.
Flashdance or Footloose? Flashdance. I had the soundtrack. I had to see Footloose b/c everyone in my high school class was going to that movie that night.
Star Wars or Star Trek? My dad wrote in to try to save Star Trek, and I’ve watched it my entire life, but I was totally addicted to Star Wars at 10 when it came out. Even read the novelization, which was why I was not pleased at the “I am your father”, as it didn’t fit in with the original tale, and Leia (who was “Lee-ah” in the first flick, dammit) being Luke’s sister is simply wrong and a weasel way to get out of having her choose Han over Luke. Plus a betrayal of the whole “force is in everything” meme. Star Trek’s better, especially since the prequels reeked majorly.
Subtitles or dubbing? Subtitles. Original voices are always better.
Comedy, drama or documentary? Comedy
Popular Music
Classic soul or hip hop? No.
Hair band or grunge?Neither
New Wave, please. Electro-pop they call it now, I think?
CDs or MP3s? Still have more CDs, probably moving them all to the computer when I get a new one.

Books?Mostly childhood stuff read at night to the kids. We’re on The Little Prince plus a buncha Parents’ Magazine Press books from my childhood. Still looking for Harry’s 2nd–Secret Chamber, it’s hiding somewhere. I have a ton of books left over from school and from the 5 years post English major where I powered through at least one if not more bad SF books a week at lunch. I couldn’t read anything good for years, yet, I couldn’t bring myself to throw bad books out. They’re BOOKS!!!

Escapist SF and mystery, of the kind where evil is ultimately exposed a little and good, although battered, sorta triumphs. Gotta have something optimistic around.
Peanut butter: chunk chunk baybee!
Bread: Good bread - can be a true sourdough french bread if white, or a solid wheat with raisins
Steak: used to eat it nearly bloody, but not a good idea anymore. Good cuts, free range grass fed medium rare for me, thank you.
Ice cream: still mourning the demise of Chocolate peanut-butter-cookie-dough from Ben and Jerry’s, but will settle for brownie batter, moose tracks, or karma sutra (vanilla/chocolate with a core of carmel). That or a White Trash Sunday (busted up ice cream sandwiches with fudge sauce and whipped cream) from the local BBQ joint.
Oh … there’s more?
Sleep Habits: diurnal mostly - mid-morning and mid-evening are best times for me. more of a night than morning person. Tummy or side sleeper.

Seafood favorites are scallops and white fish (how can a NW white trash girl possibly be allergic to salmon???)

Oh, yeah, also, I’m old. I saw Star Wars on my first date with my first husband. We saw the first Star Trek movie after I left him when he was trying to woo me back. But I’m not old enough to have seen the original TV show in prime time.

I have CDs, MP3s, and vinyl. My new goal is to buy most everything new I can on vinyl, because it really does sound better.
you gonna hate me for real this time. But this is important, because I turn the entire mp3 blog upside down because of this.
vinyl is not better than CD. Tho theoretically a mint vinyl + a superb stereo will indeed sound better for certain type of music, but I doubt most people ever be in that mode of listening.
- dust/scratch/warp
- vinyl degrade, specially in high frequency after each use.
- convenience (distribution, storage, maintenance, disposal)
basically vinyl is expensive habit. It degrades, takes a lot of room to maintain, and not exactly environmentally friendly. While the digital alternative can offer superior sound.
vinyl is not suitable for listening with high dynamic range with a lot of high frequency. (so electronica, big classic, jazz, and experimentals are pretty much out of the question. Soul, chamber classic, rock are good. )
However vinyl is good money for indie labels, because it has great nostalgia value and can be printed in low volume. (people buy them)
———
digital: mp3 are inferior because it is lossy compression. However it is very convenient and is the internet standard. (AAC are for those iPod user idiots who think $190 bucks earphone will give better color to that lousy AAC.)
at minimum 192kbps if you want to pay money. 128kbps is only suitable for deaf people. Anybody listening to 128kbps should be subject to endless ridicule.
for superior storage FLAC for the choice. It is lossless, it will maintain exact quality as CD.
ultimately listeners have to demand “better” audio quality, and this can only be delivered cheaply via digital (24bits instead of 16 bits in CD will give sound quality quantum leap, even more so than vinyl)
Of course a single 3 MB song will easily hit 30MB using such high quality, so it will take awhile for portable storage to catch up.
So for long term library building. It’s Hardrive + lossless compression. (never buy expensive disposable gadget, sine the next one will have far superior electronic at half the price.)
NEVER BUY DRM. (iPod user?) You deserve to lose your entire library when they decide to unplug the DRM key.
PB: I like both, but family prefers chunky so that’s what I eat nowadays
Bread: Whole wheat. Most of the bread I eat is “no knead” bread I bake every week, which is usually 1/2 white, 1/3 rye and 1/6 whole wheat.
Steak: I’m not a huge steak fan, though I eat pretty much anything. When I have steak I have it very rare.
Ice cream: chocolate
Evening person
Back sleeper, mainly
No alarm needed, unless I’m getting up before dawn.
Flashdance of Footloose? No.
SW or ST? The original Star Trek series is what I would pick. Though I have great memories of SW’s release and lining up to see it at the Coronet Theater in S.F.
Genre: No clear preference — can like/dislike any.
Soul or Hip-hop? No strong preference.
Hair or grunge? I much prefer other punk sub-genres to grunge, but hair metal gives me hives. Our town had its annual Mayfair this
Saturday, and hearing the Journey cover band was physically painful. Although The Decline of Western Civilization II: The Metal Years is hilarious.
CD or MP3? CD and vinyl. I own more old cassette tapes than downloaded MP3s.
Favorite Cereal: Tough one. Granola is good, though that answer might be cheating. Among commercial cereals, I’d have to say…Cracklin’ Oat Bran.
Seafood: I like oysters a lot.
Hot drink: Tea. Lots of tea.
Soda: I almost never drink soda any more. I will always, however, drink Moxie whenever I run across it.
Crackers: I nibble the kids’ goldfish crackers.
Books: I’m a terrible novel reader. I just read The Discovery of France, which was fascinating.
Peanut butter: chunky, creamy or don’t eat it/allergic? Peanuts, by themselves, out of the shell.
Bread: white or wheat? I like the kind with nuts and whole grains in it, cracked wheat, that kind of thing.
Steak: rare, medium, well-done, or no meat? No meat. When I ate meat, I preferred mine done Pittsburgh Rare (Bessemer Process): burnt on the outside, rare on the inside.
Ice Cream: chocolate, vanilla or mixes (Cookies n Cream, Rocky Road, Butter Pecan, etc.)? A week or so ago, I tried to order cake batter ice cream with cookie dough mix-ins but they were out of cake batter ice cream. Now it’s cominating my ice cream thinking. But there’s a boss gelato shop around the corner with Concord Grape to die for.
Sleep habits: Morning or evening person? Evening/night person. My ideal day starts with getting up at 2 or 3pm and starting work at 7 or 8.
Tummy, back or side sleeper? Side or tummy. I snore if I sleep on my back and end up with a dry mouth and lips. Ick.
Need an alarm or wake up on own? Usually wake on my own if it’s in my preferred rhythm, but I use an alarm anyway.
Flashdance or Footloose? Hairspray (the original).
Star Wars or Star Trek? Dark Star.
Subtitles or dubbing? Subtitles.
Comedy, drama or documentary? Ooooh! Documentaries rock!!!
Classic soul or hip hop? Hip hop.
Hair band or grunge? Goth.
CDs or MP3s? MP3s from CDs.
Favorite Cereal? Wheat Chex. I think I’m addicted.
Seafood? Cooked, I like scallops, or really good fresh wild-caught Salmon or Steelhead. Yellowtail, octopus, or flying fish roe for sushi.
Hot Drink? Tea, especially Lapsang Souchong in the fall and winter.
Soda? Sprite Zero, or Bitter Lemon.
Crackers? Carr’s Water Crackers.
Cheese? Manchego, Parrano Robusto, Camembert, Goat Cheese.
Cookie? Ginger lemon.
Lindt or Ghirardelli? Lindt. Ghirardelli tastes like chalk.
Books? SF (the real kind without elves), “good” novels in general, also bad literature for the yucks.
Video Games: Roller Coaster Tycoon
Astrological Sign: the free-roaming Archer.
Peanut butter: Chunky, organic, w/ salt.
Bread: Homemade whole wheat, but I’ll eat just about any form of bread.
Steak: No meat
Ice Cream: Chunky Monkey
Evening person, but not a total night owl anymore.
Back and then side sleeper
Need an alarm, or hungry cats.

Crackers? Anything but Wheat Thins.
Books? Non-fiction, academic press, cultural studies stuff.
Peanut butter: chunky! but rarely. On those very rare occasions, I tend to throw a handful of peanuts in the blender and grind it myself. Definitely an unusual fruit jelly/jam/preserve to go with it on the PBJ. I love pomegranate, apricot, prickly pear, mango, etc.
Bread: white or wheat? Rye. Nothing else will do; with seeds of course.
Steak: meat, yes; steak, no. Burgers medium rare
Ice Cream: Cherry Vanilla! Cherry Garcia if Breyers has sold out.

Star Wars or Star Trek? Close, but Star Wars

Comedy, drama or documentary? Err… I watch one or two movies every decade. I suppose comedy, but I only do movies when forced. I find that books are better. You make your own pictures and pace it however you like (not to mention, you can have a cigarette in the middle without missing anything ::)
Popular Music

Books? HUH?!?!??!?!? You have one total question about books and six about movies and music????
How about:
Books
Non-fiction
History: Slave Nation; Alfred and Ruth Blumrosen
Why the southern colonies joined the Revolution
Science: Annals of the Former World; John McPhee
A whole new look at the United States
Poetry: Beowulf; trans by Seamus Heaney
This is the best translation EVER of the best poem EVER!!! If you do not read this, you just go to hell. OK?
in conjunction, you should read Grendel by John Gardner; Eaters of the Dead by (yes, once upon a time he could write) Michael Crichton; and especially Silverlock by John Myers Myers (a retelling of the Battle of the Alamo, as a saga).
And on and on…. BOOKS I love BOOKS (can you tell?
The worst part of growing old is that I am losing my ability to read. Yes, I can read with reading glasses, but, no, I can’t read as fast. I regard a certasin minimum speed as necessary because if you fasll below that speed, then you are watching the frames of the film, above it and you are watching the movie.

Peanut butter: Allergic to the stuff
Bread: Wheat, though some sandwiches demand rye or sourdough
Steak: Rare or medium-rare. Any more done than that is a waste of good meat.
Ice Cream: The absinthe sorbet I had recently. But since it’s hard to come by I fall back on vanilla bean ice cream or a sorbet made with fresh local fruit (something we have no shortage of in the summer).
Sleep habits: Evening person, sleeps on the side, and relies on an alarm clock except during the height of summer when it gets light way before I have to get up. (The cats used to serve as my alarm clock, but they’ve lost interest as they’ve gotten older and are far more patient in waiting for me to wake up than they used to be.)
Movies:
Flashdance or Footloose? Never seen either of them
Star Wars or Star Trek? Star Trek, though the original 3 Star Wars were OK (and better than ST V).
Subtitles or dubbing? subtitles
Comedy, drama or documentary? Comedies and documentaries
Popular Music: Varies depending on the artist and my mood, except that I don’t like Death Metal or modern C&W at all, or even “Lite” anything (die, Kenny G, die). My format preference is vinyl when I can get it, otherwise CD. (In general, the same recording on vinyl sounds better on my stereo system than it does on CD, even with the occasional pop or click on the LP. And yes, I do have some poor quality LPs — back in my college days we joked that they were pressed on old tire casings — that probably sound worse than a low bit-rate MP3.)
Favorite Cereal? A good multi-grain rolled (oatmeal-like) hot cereal with dried fruit and nuts, but only in cold weather.
Seafood? Yes! Especially wild salmon (though with the recent west coast salmon fishery closure I most likely won’t be eating much of it this year), but definitely not farmed salmon. When in Louisiana I go for the crawfish (I’ve been disappointed by the crawfish in other parts of the country and no longer bother with it).
Hot Drink? Tea (Earl Grey or Green)
Soda? I rarely drink it, but I’ve had some Hotlips soda that’s really good and would become my favorite if I got back on a soda kick.
Crackers? Plain saltines, but pretzels or tortilla chips are my preferred snacking choice.
Books? Politics and science (separate topics, not specifically the combination of the two)
Fruit: A Hood Strawberry (nothing else comes close, but they’re probably not available outside the Pacific Northwest and, unlike those hard strawberry-shaped things in the grocery stores, don’t ship well) or a Texas Hill Country Peach (though they aren’t available around here so I have to make do with our local peaches which, to my memory, just aren’t quite as good).
Alcoholic Beverage: Beer, especially IPAs and Double IPAs. No sugary mixed drinks, thanks.
Peanut butter: creamy but without sugar/hfcs
Bread: first rye, then white, then wheat
Steak: medium rare
Ice Cream: good chocolate but I’ll get rum raisin if I can find it.
Sleep habits
Morning once I have some coffee
Back sleeper unless both dogs want to be on the bed, then side.
Wake up five minutes before the alarm goes off.

Ahem. Speak for yourself. Good stereo equipment lasts forever and is well worth the investment.
Also, vinyl can be had for cheap. It’s nice to be able to add a few dozen LPs to your collection when someone is selling them for $1/each or simply left them out for free.

Some of Colorado Dave’s Additional Categories:
Indian Food or Thai food? Indian, though I love both.
Souvlaki or Gyros? Gyros, though I no longer indulge.
Red Wine or White? Red for everything. So many flavors.
Responding to Colorado Dave:
Designated Hitter: Bad! I(’m in complete agreement. The beauty of baseball is that it DOES NOT CHANGE. Stats from the 20s are comparable to stats from the 60s. Designated hitter removes the pitcher from the equation and makes hitter stats suspect. In addition, since I regard baseball on a manager vs. manager level, designated hitter removes the pitcher from the decision making process.
Tabasco or Cholula? Neither
Indian Food or Thai food? Indian
Souvlaki or Gyros? Spanakopeta
Red Wine or White? Beer, preferring a porter or (in a pinch) a stout.
All forms of peanut butter equally, either white or wheat bread depending on the toppings, medium steak, vanilla ice cream, evening person, highly inconsistent sleeping position, unable to wake up either on my own or with an alarm, very limited familiarity with 80s movies, Star Wars, subtitles, any comedy black enough to qualify as drama, hip hop, grunge, MP3s, cannot eat cereal anymore due to mysteriously becoming lactose intolerant but it used to be Raisin Nut Bran, california rolls with tuna and/or salmon on top, dislike hot drinks altogether, Pepsi, Nilla Wafers, nonfiction (lately mostly physics stuff) but there is an open, half-finished copy of “Kiln People” by David Brin next to the computer right now and it’s okay.
Bonus category: Autechre
Peanut butter: Don’t eat it much, and don’t have much of a preference one way or the other. Usually have creamy.
Star Wars or Star Trek? Is that some kinda trick question?
Bread: Prefer white, am eating wheat for health reasons, thank Prime for white wheat.
Steak: Medium-rare.
Ice Cream: Mixes. Chocolate-chip Cookie Dough is a favorite.
Sleep habits - since working nights my sleep habits have gotten all out of wack. About half the time I crash as soon as I get home (8:00am-ish), get up around noon, then go back to sleep around 6:00pm and sleep until 10:00pm, when I get ready for work. And I definately need an alarm on those days. Otherwise I sleep around 6-8 hours and then wake up on my own. And I sleep on my side.
Movies - I have grown addicted to subtitles (or captioning) to avoid the “What did (s)he just say?” problem I have with increasing frequency.
Popular Music - I am not now, nor will ever be, savvy enough to be an IMS, so I will not embarrass myself in this company by discussing my musical “tastes”. ^.^
Favorite Cereal - Muselix (dates, raisins and nuts, oh my!Plus crispy multigrain flakes.)
Seafood - Yes ^.^ Well, actually, there’s a few varieties of fish I don’t like and I won’t eat oysters. But I like pretty much all of the rest.
Soda - Gave that up about 6 or 7 years ago, but still like the occasional root beer or Cheerwine.
Books - Lots. Fiction: Terry Pratchett is high on my list of favorite fiction authors. The wife and I have books stacked all over the house, having run out of shelf space long ago.
Peanut butter: creamy, and cannot even handle the all-natural kind.
Bread: if we’re talking sliced loaf-oriented bread, wheat all the way. I do like white baguettes, etc. though.
Steak: vegetarian, though I will eat it and eat it RARE if I’m dragged to a good steakhouse.
Ice Cream: my favorites are cookies and cream and chocolate chip cookie dough
Sleep habits
Morning or evening person? evening, though I’m forced by work to pretend I’m a morning person.
Tummy, back or side sleeper? I’m one of those freaks who flips and flops all over the bed in a variety of positions. If I ever get married, we are probably going to need separate beds.
Need an alarm or wake up on own? Are you crazy?! Alarm! Though I guess if I didn’t have to work I could wake up on my own reliably before noon.
Movies
Flashdance or Footloose? Neither. Is Dirty Dancing an acceptable third choice?
Star Wars or Star Trek? Both.
Subtitles or dubbing? Subtitles
Comedy, drama or documentary? Any, though I think I watch more documentaries.
Popular Music - I’m a total hipster with the emo and indie rock and weepy folk ladies.
Classic soul or hip hop? Both, though I have more soul and funk on my iPod.
Hair band or grunge? Either both or neither. Though I’ve been known to air my inner Foreigner.
CDs or MP3s? It depends. I’ll make the physical space commitment for albums I really love.
Additional categories from readers…
Favorite Cereal? It’s all about the cheerios.
Seafood? Boiled Crawfish, though I have the appropriate love for smoked salmon and almost any sushi you can come up with.
Hot Drink? chai
Soda? seltzer
Crackers? triscuits
Books? My standby “favorite novels” have been 100 Years Of Solitude and A Confederacy Of Dunces for the last 10 years, but others come and go, especially in nonfiction.
Peanut butter: the creamier the better — Trader Joe’s is the best.
Bread: I like bread.
Steak: Rare!
Ice cream : Yes, please. I like stuff in it.
Sleeping: Morning person, with automatic 7 AM wake up. I sleep all over the place, but mostly curled up on my side. I’ve got some knee problems that makes it hard to find a comfy position.
Movies: Uh, I’ve never seen Flashdance or Footloose. Star Wars or Star Trek are both fine. I prefer subtitles. Not pick about genre.
Music: Classic soul, though hip hop with good content gets a thumbs up from me too. Grunge. I like CDs for the car, and internet radio for the computer.
Cereal: I really like Cheerios. And Lucky Charms will always hold a place in my heart, cause it was always there for me in college.
Seafood: Love it! Not ibg on shell fish, though, unless they are in a chowder or bisque.
Hot drink: Tea, any except green. Hot chocolate made with actual chocolate.
Crackers: Stone wheat crackers. With cheese. Also, I really like saltines.
Books: ….all of them.
Here’s a question — milk: skim, 1%, 2%, whole, or none?
OMG someone who can get past the taste of Moxie and actually like to drink it!
I’ve never met anyone who does.
Peanut butter: Yuck.
Bread: Sourdough.
Steak: I used to like it medium rare.
Ice cream : Butter pecan.
Morning or evening: late, late evening.
Star Wars or Star Trek: Don’t care for either, but I like Mr Spock.
Music: I’m into classical, actually.
Cereal: Grape Nuts.
Seafood: Oysters, scallops or flounder.
Hot drink: Coffee up to 10 am, green or white tea the rest of the day.
Books: Don Quixote
Red or white: Red.
Indian or Thai: Thai
Red or green (chilies): Green on my eggs, red on my enchilada.
Here’s a question — milk: skim, 1%, 2%, whole, or none?
“Here’s a question — milk: skim, 1%, 2%, whole, or none?”
1%, if I could only still afford it. And my favorite soda: any root beer without corn syrup. (I used to love 7 Up as a kid.)
I used to only like skim milk, but I’ve moved to 1 or 2% over the last couple years. And I’m always a fan of any milk that is organic or locally/sustainably produced. Yes, you can TOTALLY tell the difference. When I can no longer afford to splurge on the fancy milk, I might as well just give it up entirely.
Peanut butter: chunky, creamy or don’t eat it/allergic?
Tired of it — I’m allergic to milk, so when I was a growing boy who needed all the calories I could get, milkshakes, pizza, etc. were right out, so I was stuck eating PB&J sandwiches to get enough to eat.
Bread: white or wheat?
Whatever bread I bake depending on what kind of flour I have in my apartment.
Steak: rare, medium, well-done, or no meat?
Preferably a steak with all three in various parts: I hate making this decision.
Ice Cream: chocolate, vanilla or mixes (Cookies n Cream, Rocky Road, Butter Pecan, etc.)?
Neopalitan (fake) ice cream. It used to be that fake ice creams were not fancy and I loved the first fancy fake ice creams (rocky road, etc.). But now, looking over a choice of chocolate almond fudge, strawberry cheesecake, etc. in multiple brands of fake ice cream, I just long for the simplicity of neopalitan.
Morning or evening person?
Morning until college, now evening.

Both.

BTW, I think this thread proves once and for all that squashed is some sophisticated form of bot. Why provide a 10-paragraph dissection of CD vs. Vinyl vs. MP3 (obviously mined from one of the many, many audiophile sites out there), but not share your favorite novel or flavor of ice cream?

Bread: Homemade wheat bread.
Steak: Medium rare — if it’s a really good steak.
Ice Cream: Chocolate Fudge Brownie.
Sleep habits
Morning or evening person?: Brunch person. Seriously, I do my best work about midmorning. Don’t like to get up before sunrise, but also don’t like to go to bed much past midnight.
Tummy, back or side sleeper?: Side all the way. I snore when I sleep on my back.
Need an alarm or wake up on own?: Alarm. Except when I’m really excited or nervous about something.
Movies
Flashdance or Footloose?: Never seen either, but I used to love the song from Footloose.
Star Wars or Star Trek?: Oh God. What a choice to have to make.
Subtitles or dubbing?: It all depends on the quality of the dub (and with DVDs, we can all have our own preferences). Although my brain seems to make very little differentiation between written and spoken English. When I see a film with subtitles, unless I understood the language being spoken, I remember the actors having spoken English, in their own voices. Neat trick. Makes it hard to remember if I saw something subbed or dubbed, though.
Comedy, drama or documentary?: Comedy, usually — although I subscribe to the Roger Ebert philosophy of movies. That being the following: If a movie does what it intended to do, and does it well, then it is a good movie. If I came to see Jackie Chan fight, and I saw some great fight sequences, then who cares if the plot was thin?
Popular Music
Classic soul or hip hop?: Hip hop.
Hair band or grunge?: Grunge.
CDs or MP3s?: MP3s.
Favorite Cereal? Raisin bran!
Seafood? Sushi — the chef’s choice platter, please.
Hot Drink? Tea — any sort. Flavored black is ideal — anything from Earl Grey to peach apricot to chai….
Soda? Fresca!
Crackers? Tomato basil Wheat Thins. Om nom nom. *is supposed to be avoiding too many carbs*
Books? Yes please. A few particular favorites are by Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Jane Austen, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein….and one of the best new books I’ve read is Spin, by Robert Charles Wilson.
Cass, that question led to some truly epic milk wank over on Livejournal when it was asked recently. People are more vehement about their choice of milk than their political candidate. The personal character of skim-milk drinkers was impugned, along with the maturity of whole-milk drinkers and the convictions of 1% and 2% drinkers. The thread got into the hundreds and hundreds of comments as people took up arms to defend their milk-drinking habits.
However, everyone will unite against the soymilk drinkers. And I’m a soymilk drinker. Can’t digest cow’s milk anymore. And I really do like the taste of soymilk. SO THERE.
Peanut butter: Cashew butter FTW
Bread: wheat, why would you ever use white. that is a sin.
Steak: medium I guess. not a common food.
Ice Cream: Amy’s Mexican Vanilla > *

Morning or evening person? Evening
Tummy, back or side sleeper? Side
Need an alarm or wake up on own? Both (I set my clock half an hour ahead for the 2-3 times a year I don’t wake up on time. I look up, think “Holy Crap!”, and jump out of bed; by the time my brain wakes up and realized that I’m NOT late, it’s too late - I’m up and awake)
Flashdance or Footloose? Flashdance (I grew up in a town like the one in Footloose {shudder})
Star Wars or Star Trek? I have to choose (she wails). BOTH.
Subtitles or dubbing? Subtitled (dubbing should be outlawed)
Comedy, drama or documentary? All the above

Sleep habits
I’m mainly an evening person
I usually start off on my side but end up on my stomach by the morning
I usually need an alarm if I have anything to do before noon
Movies
Footloose
Star Wars
Subtitles–if you’ve ever tried to watch Run Lola, Run dubbed into English you’d get the preference for subtitles
Comedy, drama or documentary?–All of the above
Popular Music
Classic soul
Grunge
CDs or MP3s?–both. I love my Ipod but I don’t have an Ipod adapter in my car, therefore I need CDs.
Favorite Cereal?
Granola with raisins
Seafood?
Calimari
Hot Drink?
Tea…black tea, green tea, some herbal teas…pretty much anything but chamomile and cinnamon varieties.
Soda?
I don’t drink pop as a rule. I’ve had Coca-cola maybe three times in my entire life, twice it was to calm an upset stomach and once it was mixed with rum. I’m not a huge fan of carbonation.
Crackers?
Ritz, probably
Books?
The top two are George Orwell’s 1984 and Margaret Atwood’s The Blind Assassin…I love dystopian novels, I love feminist work (fiction and non-fiction), and I also like most books which involve sword-fighting, elections, or both. (Peter David’s Knight Life has both.)
Peanut butter: chunky, creamy or don’t eat it/allergic?
Creamy. I find that chunky tears up the bread too much, though I do like it as well.
Bread: white or wheat?
Wheat. I’m particularly partial to Nature’s Own Sugar-Free 100% Wheat.
Steak: rare, medium, well-done, or no meat?
Ever since getting severe indigestion from a very rare (but very good) steak I had in Mexico as a young lad, I have only liked my steaks well-done.
Ice Cream: chocolate, vanilla or mixes (Cookies n Cream, Rocky Road, Butter Pecan, etc.)?
Definitely mixes. Infinite diversity in infinite combinations.
Sleep habits
Morning or evening person?
Evening. My natural wakup time is around 10 AM and always has been. I can’t pull all-nighters anymore like I did in college, but I’m always good to go until 4 or 5 AM.
Tummy, back or side sleeper?
Back or side. Just not comfortable for a fat guy to sleep on my stomach.
Need an alarm or wake up on own?
For work, an alarm (actually two alarms) is de rigeur.
Movies
Flashdance or Footloose?
Believe it or not I haven’t seen either one. Can I vote for Road House?
Star Wars or Star Trek?
Trek wins because it’s a much more liberal universe. Lucas’ vision is an appalling aristocratic dystopia. See David Brin’s classic essays on the subject.
Subtitles or dubbing?
Dubbing, especially hilariously comedic ones like the Dynaman series that was shown on Night Flight (done by a couple of the Kids In The Hall).
Comedy, drama or documentary?
All of the above, if done well. Comedy is the toughest of the three, for my money.
Popular Music
Classic soul or hip hop?
Hip hop I guess. Not really my genres…If you classify Seal and Sade as Soul, I’ll take those too.
Hair band or grunge?
Grunge has more heart, something to say.
CDs or MP3s?
CDs, which I can then rip to MP3s.
Favorite Cereal?
Any kind of low-sugar vaguely healthy mix, as long as it doesn’t have raisins. I’m apparently allergic to raisins, though I have no problem with grapes. I tend to get store brand banana-nut cluster cereals.
Seafood?
Grilled Salmon.
Hot Drink?
Tea, I never acquired the taste for coffee.
Soda?
Diet anything. I particularly like the new Diet Coke Plus and Pepsi Max.
Crackers?
Toss-up between unsalted tops and fat-free. Either will suffice as a delivery system.
Books?
Lots of science fiction, tending towards “harder” military SF (David Drake’s Hammer’s Slammers, John Ringo’s March trilogy, David Weber’s Honor Harrington books, etc.) but also encompassing the more psychological and philosophical adventures (David Brin, Heinlein). Also I read quite a bit of Fantasy/SF (Julian May’s Pliocene Exile series), and classics such as Tolkien.

Books: fantasy, horror, with the occasional romance thrown in.
When I went to the grocery on Sunday they had London broil steaks on sale for $1.89 a pound - that’s like 60% off the regular price. I bought this nice squared-off piece, about 2″ x 2-1/2″ x 9″ and 2-1/2 pounds. I took it home and put it in one of those extra-large Ziploc bags with a couple of cloves of garlic all minced up, a bunch of black pepper, an ounce of red wine, an ounce of vegetable oil, an ounce or two of water and about a third a packet of “herbs and spices” marinade off the grocery store spice rack. Then I let it sit in the refrigerator for two days.
Tonight I fried up a half an onion, turned the burner to max and seared both sides of the steak, then put the onions back in the frying pan and turned the burner down to about half-way. I started a pot of saffron rice and waited about ten minutes, then I added a handful of peas to the rice and flipped the steak over. After another six minutes I took the steak off the burner By that time, the onions and the beef juice were reduced to a gooey, spicy dark brown sauce. Another five minutes and the rice was done and the steak was ready to slice.
Oh, I wanna tell you, it was so meltingly tender and juicy I practically swooned, plus I’ve got the stuff to make sandwiches for the rest of the week. And afterwards for dessert, a shot of Dickel number twelve straight up, chased down by a glass of ice cold Yeungling. All is good, all is well, aw Hell yeah!
I am a soy milk drinker. Moo cow fuck milk is the third of my 3 fibro food triggers.
Peanut butter: creamy and I eat it on sourdough
Bread: white.
Steak: rare, almost impossible to get in a resteraunt because you could die of E Coli
Ice Cream: Blueberry Cheesecake, or Strawberry/
