Dear Squashed:

I really am well-versed in all of these bands. I also have been listening to "college rock" a.k.a. "indie rock" for over 16 years, now (was also a d.j. twice-over at one of the most well-respected universities for college rock). I've also been aware that while I've liked a few Calexico songs- for the most part- not a fan of Calexico, for the last 11-12 years. Big fan of Touch and Go records/ Quarterstick, though, in general.

So, speaking of Von Sudenfed: are you now going to school me on The Fall? Or, are we moving on to Merge, Rough Trade, or French Kiss Records?

Squashed: I’m truly confused, sorry. I don’t get how these artists are linked to blues or psychedelic music. that’s because I will go to great lengths to avoid listening to blues and psychedelic music. maybe my shoegazer past counts somewhat for “psychedelic”. As close as I ever get to psychedelia, is MC5, and all of those beloved past shoegazer bands (and the reunited ones!). </i>

It's ying and yang thing.

post punk of course is related to punk, which then owes a great deal to blues. psych folks and folks are another side of early punk, in term of melodic root. Watching how the main line evolve sort of give interesting blend. (eg, chicago post-punk/post-rock/math rock vs. west coast power punk, vs chicago blues and adirondack nu-folk.)

von sudenfed, Boris, .. entire touch and go catalog are blend of various styles into hardcore. ... (just rambling)

That moment in the video where "Country Feedback" becomes "Like a Rolling Stone" was nifty.

Jake- I know their hx. I think I just got burned out on playing certain bands, by request.. See: Roxy Music. Maybe I'll do something crazy: give them and Roxy a second chance, as my taste in music has changed somewhat, over the last 10-12 years, or so. I mean, when I was a freshman or sophomore in college, I was all about pop-punk, like Supernova. Now, not so much. I know what this is like for me: if someone were to say they hate The Silver Apples. I'd think they were all sorts of nuts. Which reminds me: I have record shopping to do (as always).

holly. e.r.,

Given that the Mekons have been putting out music for 30 some-odd years, yeah, I think they're worth looking at. They have varied so much stylistically that I think you'll probably find something you like. Or, you could just dislike their sound altogether.

I'm somewhat less pretentious than I used to be. It may not be less enough, though.

Wow, this thread is just a bonanza of Mekons.

Jake Squid: I just want to let you know that I used to be in love with The Mekons (or so I thought), became a college rock d.j.----&gt;loathing them. maybe something about the program director liking them, and I considered him to be a wee bit pretentious (and all of the callers that requested them). and, no: I am not calling you pretentious. ;)
just wondering if I should go back and give them another shot.

Tom Hilton,

Considering that they've been around for, what? 3 decades, I'm surprised that so few people have heard of them. I was fortunate enough to see them perform last winter.
