Ten songs at random from your iPod or other MP3 playing device. Leave yours in comments.
- “Peel Back The Moon, Beware”—Elf Power
- “You Don’t Smile Anymore”—Mr. Suitcase
- “Fire Sign”—The Gossip
- “Country Feedback”—REM
- “My Juvenile”—Bjork
- “Teri Sadi”—DJ Rekha

- “You’re The Kind of Girl”—Mixel Pixel
- “Girls On Film”—The Living End (Duran Duran cover)
- “Crimes and Nightcalls”—Femme
I always liked this REM song the most of all of theirs. Stipe gets his voice to break in that perfect country break form. He does that in a lot, but in this song, the weepy nature of the break is absolutely perfect. Hank Williams would be impressed.
I usually hate the cell phone camera videos of concerts, but this one of The Gossip doing “Fire Sign” really captures how great one of their shows is:
This made me freak out with joy:
I’ll never really understand the fuss over Amy Winehouse.

I’m not normally a fan of cell phone concert footage either, but since I’ve officially only appeared in ONE, I’m gonna go ahead and post this historic event. It was the last concert I went to, last October at the Black Cat in DC–Boris with Michio Kurihara. I’m there for a split second at the very end:

okay, guess Pandagon doesn’t like my new Mac (I do!), and I reposted. I hate that. I feel like a tool. Oh, but I never confuse my hot Brits!
Oh, my god: I have some Good Riddance, too, Sarcastro! I thought, following ‘99, that I was the only one who would ever have them on their Ipod.
Country Feedback has always been one of my favorites, too. I used it to stump my friend on a short-lived lyric trivia-away message mem back in 1999, when the internet was wild and untamed.

I too love REM’s “Country Feedback” (I was a bit of an REM freak during my misspent youth)… That song does such a good job of capturing the regret and bittersweet nostalgia you feel when remembering past relationships. I always imagine the singer sorting through souvenirs and mementos from past lovers (”crazy- all the lovers have been tagged”), alternately thinking that he still “needs this” and that it’s crazy what he could have had, but threw away.
Good, if somewhat maudlin, stuff.
Also, I think that’s the first time Amanda’s random 10 featured a song I knew by heart. Had to happen someday!

Wow, 2 Mekons songs on one Friday. I don’t even know anybody else who’s ever heard of them.
Jake Squid, I have a Mekons song on mine about every other week on average. Great band, and little by little people have been discovering them.
holly. e. r. May 23, 2008 at 11:31 am
Dismemberment Plan- “Automatic”
Scout Niblett- “I Am” and The Lapse- “Basilico Basilica”
interesting combination, do you like blues and those new psych folks?
Tom Hilton,
Considering that they’ve been around for, what? 3 decades, I’m surprised that so few people have heard of them. I was fortunate enough to see them perform last winter.
Jake Squid: I just want to let you know that I used to be in love with The Mekons (or so I thought), became a college rock d.j.—->loathing them. maybe something about the program director liking them, and I considered him to be a wee bit pretentious (and all of the callers that requested them). and, no: I am not calling you pretentious.
just wondering if I should go back and give them another shot.
Squashed: I’m truly confused, sorry. I don’t get how these artists are linked to blues or psychedelic music. that’s because I will go to great lengths to avoid listening to blues and psychedelic music. maybe my shoegazer past counts somewhat for “psychedelic”. As close as I ever get to psychedelia, is MC5, and all of those beloved past shoegazer bands (and the reunited ones!).
Late Edition:
1. Pile of Gold - The Blow
2. Pyramid Song - Radiohead
3. Californie - Air
4. Look Me Over - M. Ward
5. Company Calls - Death Cab for Cutie
6. Jesse James - The Pogues
7. Don’t Fail Me Now - Ryan Adams & The Cardinals
8. ‘Cello Song - Nick Drake
9. Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide - David Bowie
10. Corcovado - Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto
and the bonus: Gonna Have a Funky Good Time - James Brown
holly. e.r.,
Given that the Mekons have been putting out music for 30 some-odd years, yeah, I think they’re worth looking at. They have varied so much stylistically that I think you’ll probably find something you like. Or, you could just dislike their sound altogether.
I’m somewhat less pretentious than I used to be. It may not be less enough, though.
Wow, this thread is just a bonanza of Mekons.
Jake- I know their hx. I think I just got burned out on playing certain bands, by request.. See: Roxy Music. Maybe I’ll do something crazy: give them and Roxy a second chance, as my taste in music has changed somewhat, over the last 10-12 years, or so. I mean, when I was a freshman or sophomore in college, I was all about pop-punk, like Supernova. Now, not so much. I know what this is like for me: if someone were to say they hate The Silver Apples. I’d think they were all sorts of nuts. Which reminds me: I have record shopping to do (as always).
That moment in the video where “Country Feedback” becomes “Like a Rolling Stone” was nifty.

It’s ying and yang thing.
post punk of course is related to punk, which then owes a great deal to blues. psych folks and folks are another side of early punk, in term of melodic root. Watching how the main line evolve sort of give interesting blend. (eg, chicago post-punk/post-rock/math rock vs. west coast power punk, vs chicago blues and adirondack nu-folk.)
von sudenfed, Boris, .. entire touch and go catalog are blend of various styles into hardcore. … (just rambling)
from quarter stick catalog: (the strange blend of hardcore)
Mekons - Dickie, Chalkie and Nobby (from ‘Natural’)
www.touchandgorecords.com/media/3816.mp3
Calexico - Cruel (from ‘Garden Ruin’)
http://www.touchandgorecords.com/media/3583.mp3
Uzeda - Steam, Rain & Other Stuff (from ‘Stella’)
http://www.touchandgorecords.com/media/3693.mp3
I love Uzeda, highly recommended if you like Chicago mathrock in tradition of Albini et. all.
Dear Squashed:
I really am well-versed in all of these bands. I also have been listening to “college rock” a.k.a. “indie rock” for over 16 years, now (was also a d.j. twice-over at one of the most well-respected universities for college rock). I’ve also been aware that while I’ve liked a few Calexico songs- for the most part- not a fan of Calexico, for the last 11-12 years. Big fan of Touch and Go records/ Quarterstick, though, in general.
So, speaking of Von Sudenfed: are you now going to school me on The Fall? Or, are we moving on to Merge, Rough Trade, or French Kiss Records?
At Home I Feel Like a Tourist
