(UPDATE: Now that he’s going to be the GOP’s nominee, John McCain finally “discovered” how radioactive Rod Parsley is and repudiated him as well. There will definitely be a fundie eruption over this one.)
Today John McCain finally gave the boot to batsh*t fundie Pastor John Hagee of the 17,000-member Cornerstone Church in Texas after audio was released of the televangelist saying that Hitler had been sent by God to help Jews reach the Promised Land via the Holocaust. This was nothing new, however, so one wonders what rock the Arizona senator and his staff have been hiding under:
[I]n his 2006 book “Jerusalem Countdown”, Hagee proposed the theory that “anti-Semitism, and thus the Holocaust, was the fault of Jews themselves — the result of an age old divine curse incurred by the ancient Hebrews through worshiping idols and passed, down the ages, to all Jews now alive.” He also wrote that “Most readers will be shocked by the clear record of history linking Adolf Hitler and the Roman Catholic Church in a conspiracy to exterminate the Jews.”Of course it would be interesting to know why this particular insanity crossed the line for McCain, since he had previously refused to reject the endorsement of Armegeddon proponent Hagee, who has condemned Catholics, gays, women, blacks and more from the pulpit and on video.
We’ve been blogging about the juicy-mouthed Patriot Pastor for a long time now. Apparently this influential nutbag has finally caught fire on the blogs.
More below the fold.
Is this the kind of “influence” you want to have on the speed dial of the next White House occupant?
Honestly, this guy is so off the rails (but has incredible political sway, having supported Ken Blackwell’s run for governor in Ohio), that he seems easy to dismiss. What McCain wants this man’s voter base; I doubt he cares one whit about Parsley’s nonsense. It just makes the Arizona senator look more craven.“This so-called hate crimes legislation would preferred status to people based on entirely on who they choose as a sexual partner. What if they change their mind the next night!”
“Why is marriage under attack?!…Why is the family coming under such brutal attack from the forces of darkness…”
“I will lift my voice against THE AGENDA of America’s tortured and angry homosexual population…”
“In essence the Supreme Court of the United States on June 26, 2003, legalized the perverted act of sodomy. And we said nothing…”
“This is not about homosexual rights or lesbian rights…this is about THE DESTRUCTION of the VERY COVENANT (organ music rises up in the background as he waves his finger desperately) They are seeking to “redefine” marriage. In other words, they are intending to PERVERT God’s original intention!”
I also expect nothing will come of this, since Parsley saves much of his spittle for homo-tirades and anti-Muslim rants, and neither apparently reaches McCain’s threshold for offensiveness.

as long as they refer to him as a Rod Parsley aka male pubic hair I’m happy
about time some of this horrible dickweed’s crap is coming out.
It’s far far far worse than anything Rev. Wright would ever say.
However, this guy can probably get away with a lot more shit behind the pulpit because he’s white.
Grr.
sometimes I just want to hide out until it’s all over.
Danica - that’s my first reaction, too. Wright made some (legitimate, IMO) criticisms of the US in inflammatory language and was pilloried for it. Robertson and Falwell try to blame 9/11 on homosexuals and feminists and retain their access to the corridors of power.
I’m glad that Hagee is being exposed for who he is, but saddened that in going down the list of his hateful beliefs we get to skip over hating on women, gays, Catholics, Muslims, and only when it comes to hating on Jews does he get the boot.
Wow, I think we can call this one a victory for the netroots. Good work, especially you, Pam.
I think togolosh makes a valid point, but hell, I think it should go further. Wright made some valid criticisms of American policy in an somewhat inflamatory manner, and in the press he’s this America-hating racist kook, while Hagee and Parsley are spouting *extremely* weird Dungeons and Dragons-style demonic racist and homophobic gibberish and advocate a foreign policy with armageddon as its goal, and in the press they’re popular ministers at megachurches.
Post Freepers’ reactions if there’s any.
“Of course it would be interesting to know why this particular insanity crossed the line for McCain”
As a Member of that particular Tribe, I gotta tell you that I cringe at the fact that [a too-blatant display of] anti-Semitism is apparently the thing that “crosses the line” for the media when it comes to the haters. Racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and even Catholic-bashing, hey, no prob (when it suits them, that is), but go after the Joooos…
I suppose it could be argued that I should take it as a compliment, or some perverse acknowledgement of a certain stripe of political power. But all I hear behind it is “they own the banks, the media, the govermment, and the whole world.”
Not that I want to go off on a comparative-victimization rant here — that’s ridiculous and offensive to everyone. But I do want to point out that when it comes to the haters, people of color they usually want deported, or maybe enslaved. Us, they still want exterminated.
Because McCain has clinched the nomination and now has a Democratic opponent.
The double talk express is right on track.
