Kudos to Catholics for Choice for putting together a report exposing that Bill Donohue is not who he says he is. He claims to be a defender of Catholics against bigotry, but instead, he’s a right wing shill who mainly focuses on partisan political attacks. Scott Swenson has the story. Here’s a taste.
In a 43-page report released Monday, The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights: Neither Religious, Nor Civil, Catholics for Choice documents a pattern of media and political manipulation by Donahue, his organization, and his supporters. His base of support comes from the most politicized leaders of the Catholic hierarchy, including Cardinal Egan, and a board that reads like a Who’s Who of partisan Republican politics (L. Brent Bozell III, Alan Keyes, Kate O’Beirne, Linda Chavez, Kenneth Whitehead, Lawrence Kudlow, Thomas Monaghan, William Simon, Jr.). Far from protecting Catholics from bigotry, Donahue plays the victim card to advance a narrow, socially conservative, hierarchical and patriarchal political view.
Read the whole thing.

Why oh why do you hate Catholics so much?!?!?
…now that that’s over…
I believe there are a bunch of Catholics who buy everything Bill Donohue sells. They just need somebody to say it so any repercussion stay with him instead of with some church official. He’s basically just a proxy. Vile, but a proxy. A tool. A puppet.
But it’s his niche…
There’s right wingers of every religious stripe who use religion as a cover for their political views. Donohue does get traction with the minority of right wing Catholics who think you’re not a “real” Catholic unless you loathe modernity and especially women’s rights. But that’s a tiny minority of Catholics.
Amazing how a right-wing thug with a largely inactive opt-out mailing list and a willingness to strut his fat butt up and down upper 6th Ave all day until a MSM “john” calls for his services became the only recognised “Catholic representative” on TV who doesn’t wear a priest’s collar.
Well, maybe not so amazing considering the MSM’s inherent laziness and financial backing from the dinosaurs of Catholicism. I don’t expect that to change, but thanks for the link. I’ll be citing it every time I respond to one of this scumbag’s tirades.
“But that’s a tiny minority of Catholics.”
There was a small minority of Catholics who felt that John Kerry should be denied communion because he wasn’t strict enough in his beliefs. But when some high-ranking official says it, it’s out there and it hurts.
If Donohue and his rantings were seen as a threat, the church would shut him down. The fact that he runs his mouth with no comment from the RCC indicates more to me than anything else…
I have a big, happy, evil smile on my face right now.
Off topic, but related - apparently Vito the Family Man has a lesbian sister who he shuns. ‘Cause nothing says family like hating on your sister and cheating on your wife.
But the “official” Catholic Church is right up there with Donahue. Look at the public heretic burning they’r doing of Kathleen Sebelius.
There was shit in there I’d never had an inkling about. He sent one of his thugs to pound on Shakes’s door for ten minutes? I never heard about that. Was the fuckwad arrested, or did he just get walking papers and a pat on the head?
Damn, I’m mad now.
Yeah, MikeEss, it’s the same assholes who whine about “cafeteria Catholics” whwhile picking and choosing what they want to follow just as much.
That’s just awesome. It describes him to a T. I’m gonna use that “punk” reference all the time now.Left this with Scott at Reality Check
I cannot imagine who would buy Donohue as a real Cathlolic. He’s a total and obvious nut job!
So essentially he’s not Superman or even Clark Kent, but some guy who likes to wear spandex and fly around, drawing attention to himself.
Thanks, louise, I needed that visual.

Donohue can’t fly. And you certainly don’t want to see him in spandex!
As some here know, I’m so very for a guy who likes Spandex- I actually grossed myself out with this one, but it was too funny and odd an image not to share…
Hey, ginmar- hang in there; I know you’ve had a bit of a run w/trollz lately. Got me a new book (Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots- different author) and will share when I’m done; also library wants me to make more fudge for a fundraiser. So some will head your way with the book…

I always thought religion *caused* those views. Other than a god or gods watching everything we do, what possible reason could a person have for wanting the government to regulate what two adults do in their bedroom?
Good to have the report, but the wingnut base of Team Donohue is ancient, ancient news. Donohue is a right-wing media assassin under color of Catholicism. Repeat: the asswipe who media-assassinated your thing with Team Edwards is a blatant wingnut media assassin. 97% of U.S. Catholics, including a majority of staunch pro-life Catholics, stand to that Board of Directors’ left.
General rule: if Alan Keyes is there, it’s about wingnuttia and nothing else.
Hagee has apologized.

No he hasn’t.
An apology is when you accept responsibility for your actions, whether or not they might have been hurtful. Referring to the Catholic Church as the Whore of Babylon cannot possibly be construed as a compliment that somehow went awry and unexpectedly offended a few Catholics.
