Don Wildmon’s screeching again, calling for action against the manufacturer of Pampers, Tide and Crest over the long-awaited kiss of a gay couple on As the World Turns. My how the mighty have fallen if this is the what gets Don worked up.

Procter & Gamble has resumed using explicit, open-mouth homosexual kissing in their soap opera, “As the World Turns.” P&G decided to include this type of content as a commitment to “diversity.” P&G stopped showing such scenes some months ago, but has now decided to again help promote the homosexual agenda which includes homosexual marriage.

Gay activists are hopeful that the P&G effort will desensitize viewers to the homosexual lifestyle and help make the unhealthy and immoral lifestyle more acceptable to society, especially to children and youth.

View a scene from the April 23, 2008 episode by P&G. WARNING - content is repulsive!

“As the World Turns” is owned and controlled completely by P&G. No network made this decision. P&G alone made the decision to support the homosexual agenda.

Here, folks, is the “explicit” kiss — maybe Don has access to some alternate hard core version we don’t know about.

While we’re on the AFA, take a look at its reaction to McDonald’s decision to partner with a pro-gay business organization.

The last AFA alert was a call to its denizens to flood McDonald’s corporate because of its decision to partner with the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). Apparently the response letter the homobigots received was not satisfactory, so Don sent out this alert parsing the letter.

The statements in bold below are those made by McDonald’s, followed by AFA’s responses.

“At McDonald’s, we treat all our employees and customers with dignity and respect regardless of their ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or any other differentiating factor.”

We are not telling McDonald’s who they can hire to work for the company, nor are we demanding that they stop serving Big Macs to homosexual customers.

This issue is about the world’s largest fast food chain allying itself and partnering with an organization that lobbies Congress to enact laws that we feel can be used to repress religious freedom or undermine the sanctity of marriage.

“While one McDonald’s employee is affiliated with the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), McDonald’s is in no way ‘aggressively promoting the homosexual agenda’ as suggested in the newsletter.”

To refer to Richard Ellis, who is the vice president of communications for McDonald’s, as “one McDonald’s employee,” as if he is a teenager flipping hamburgers, is disingenuous at best.

While “aggressively” is admittedly a subjective term, AFA believes that giving money to and partnering with a homosexual lobby organization is certainly an enthusiastic promotion of the homosexual agenda.

“The NGLCC is a non-profit organization dedicated to support economic opportunities for the gay and lesbian business community.”

It is quite clear from the NGLCC Web site that that organization not only supports “economic opportunities” for homosexuals, it also lobbies Congress on a wide range of issues related to the gay agenda.

“In addition to McDonald’s, there are numerous other Fortune 500 companies that serve as corporate partners with NGLCC.”

AFA rejects this “everybody’s doing it” excuse offered by McDonald’s, and is asking the fast food company to remain neutral in these controversial skirmishes of the culture war.

“All references to comments from Jim Skinner, McDonald’s CEO in the Action Alert Newsletter are complete fabrications.”

Our Action Alert assumed that Mr. Skinner’s comments were specifically addressing the promotion of the gay agenda, when they were not. We apologize for any confusion this has caused.

However, the actual comments attributed to Mr. Skinner were not fabricated, but instead came from McDonald’s own Web site. They were a direct quote of Mr. Skinner’s comments, posted by Vice President Bob Langert, made by Mr. Skinner at the Annual Shareholders’ Meeting in 2007.

When Mr. Skinner said, “We have an obligation to use our size and resources to make a difference in the world,” we now have come to believe that part of that vision, as evidenced by McDonald’s partnership with the NGLCC, is the promotion of the gay agenda.

  1. Why do I get the feeling that if Don Wildmon and the AFA were around 150-years ago they’d be talking about support of slavery in similar terms to their denunciation of LGBT people?

    Is it just me?…

  2. Man, Shia LaBeouf is in EVERYTHING these days.

  3. No. In fact, I think they’d be promoting the actual expansion of slavery.

  4. Yeah. That was a pretty hot and heavy make-out sess all right. Maybe it’s just hot to the fundies cause the characters are clearly saving tongue for marriage.

And we all know how many “children and youth” watch As the World Turns. They should be more worried about the stay-at-home dads…boogaboogabooga!

  5. MJ_

I don’t think the AFA would in less of a tizzy over a closed mouth kiss. I think they’d screech over hand holding or longing glances (they likely have). They would probably have vapors over the existence of a singular gay character that was in some sort of ‘pray away teh gay’ program living a celibate life, because there would be the chance that the writers would have the character ‘backslide’ into ’sin’ or some such nonsense.

I get it. The AFA wants gay people not to exist. Not going to happen. I wonder if I can donate some sort of fainting couch to their offices?

  6. Tlazolteotl

I think Wildmon may have a different definitiion of ‘open-mouth kiss’ than the rest of us!

And I love the “DON”T WATCH TEH GAI KISS IT IS REPULSIVE BUT HERE IS A LINK IN CASE YOU HAVE TO!”

  7. It’s “Days of Our Hot-Hot Brokeback Lives”!

Okay, I guess I’ll keep buying Tide, then.

  8. libdevil

These guys weren’t around 150 years ago, but their equivalents were. There have always been and may always be regressive troglodytes determined to salve the emotional wounds life has inflicted upon them by kicking somebody else.

  9. FashionablyEvil

    explicit, open-mouth homosexual kissing

Where’s the tongue??? I was seriously misled by my middle school health teacher…

  10. First and foremost, I have something to say to Don: We are already desensitized, thanks to homophobes like you.

And yes, all of these neocons support slavery.

  11. Jennifer

I don’t think the AFA would in less of a tizzy over a closed mouth kiss. I think they’d screech over hand holding or longing glances (they likely have).

They haven’t had much of a choice not to. “As The World Turns” hasn’t let the boys — two characters in a committed dating relationship — kiss in seven freaking months. The writers keep saying it’s due to “good storytelling,” which might help if the storytelling actually warranted it. They kissed twice before they started dating, then not again until last week, and not due to any genuine obstacle. Noah, the dark-haired one, entered in a green-card marriage a few weeks back, but even before that the two of them were unrealistically chaste.

You’ll notice, of course, that at no time in their article do they state having a problem with all of the divorce, affairs, drug abuse, murder, attempted rapes, and kidnappings that have taken place in the past few months on the show. Quaint, huh?

Er, this may have been the relationship that dragged me back to my soap opera addiction. Which sucks, because there are gay boys on German soap operas I could be watching on Youtube who are in relationships and, you know, actually kiss. And German society’s still in one piece! Who knew?

  12. kodiak

“AFA rejects this “everybody’s doing it” excuse offered by McDonald’s, and is asking the fast food company to remain neutral in these controversial skirmishes of the culture war.”

No, AFA is asking McDonalds to specifically deny their support to NGLCC. That’s not remaining neutral, that’s standing in opposition to them. Withdrawing their support because bigots asked them to is in no way remaining neutral.

Can we please send these people back to school to learn the meaning of the words and phrases they choose? Bah!

Oh, also, that was a really tame kiss all things considered. I’ve seen teenagers on buses and in coffee shops say hello or goodbye more exuberantly than that…. (of course I missed the actual conversation since it seemed prudent to have the sound off at the office, so I can only guess that it was a ’see ya later’ kiss)

  13. Mnemosyne

Seriously, that was it? We need to show Don some Jean Genet films from the good ol’ days of the 1950s if he thinks that was hawt.

  14. Jonathan Hohensee

I like McDonold’s reaction to this. As evil as some people say corporations are, a lot of them are generally and aggressively pro-LGTB. I remember Disney was under fire a short while ago for recognizing gay marriages for their cruises discount program (or something in that ball park) and their reaction to all of the fundie’s bitching and moaning was “fuck you, they throw around money around too.”

Where’s the tongue??? I was seriously misled by my middle school health teacher…
Well, after doing that to you I certainly hope he’s in jail!

  15. deep6

You’ll notice, of course, that at no time in their article do they state having a problem with all of the divorce, affairs, drug abuse, murder, attempted rapes, and kidnappings that have taken place in the past few months on the show. Quaint, huh?

I was just thinking the same thing. I mean, it’s been ages since I last was into soaps (One Life to Live, all the way) but isn’t the standard episode sex, filler, cat fight, more sex, filler, filler, gun fight, kidnapping, filler, adulterous sex, demon possession and then more sex? Isn’t soap opera land just one big juicy dish of sin?

  16. Jonathan Hohensee

I remember Disney was under fire a short while ago for recognizing gay marriages for their cruises discount program (or something in that ball park) and their reaction to all of the fundie’s bitching and moaning was “fuck you, they throw around money around too.”
Well, since it was Disney, I’d say their reaction was more likely “Well, Grosh! I sure don’t agree with ya fellers! Hyuck hyuck!”

  17. the opoponax

a lot of them are generally and aggressively pro-LGTB.

Well, to be honest, a lot of them are generally and aggressively pro-profit. Gay couples want to go to Disney World too, as aesthetically abhorrent as I think it is.

It gets interesting in terms of labor issues, though — what exactly is in it for McDonald’s if they provide partner benefits, etc?

In high school I had a summer job at Old Navy. Where I learned that, because Gap, Inc. was pretty much the only big corporation in town that created a comfortable work environment for gay people, almost the entire staff was gay. Now that I think about it, around that same time the only locally visible transgendered person in our town worked at McDonald’s, where I’m sorry to say they were harrassed mercilessly by all the high school kids who hung out there.

  18. the opoponax

as aesthetically abhorrent as I think it is.

Just to clarify, ‘it’ in this sentence refers to Disney World, not gay couples. Sometimes I forget not everyone knows I’m queer.

  19. Elizabeth

That’s it? I haven’t watched soap operas in 40-50 years, but that seems pretty tame to me. I mean they looked around to be sure that they were in private and then kept the exchange to about a minute, and I didn’t see any tent raising. It’s not like they were making out on a park bench in public, or does that scene come next week?

  20. bernarda

Going back in time, the AFA would be with Cotton Mather and talking about witches.

  21. the opoponax

Yeah, the looking around really stuck out. Granted I had to watch it on mute, so maybe there was a non “omg teh geys r seecrativ!” rationale in the dialogue. On mute, the body language seemed furtive to me, like they were hyper-aware of the deviancy of what they were about to do. Homosexuality as borderline criminal. Of course I don’t watch the show and couldn’t hear the words, so take all that over-analysis with a grain of salt.

Wasn’t there an episode of Will & Grace where Jack & Co. were outraged about a supposed gay kiss on a soap opera being censored? Did some other soap do this already, years ago?

  22. Jonathan Hohensee

Well, to be honest, a lot of them are generally and aggressively pro-profit. Gay couples want to go to Disney World too, as aesthetically abhorrent as I think it is.
I think for Disney it’s different; if you where the CEO of the amusement park division which demographic would you rather piss off; homosexuals (6% of the population) or the flyover state middle America types who feel a little awkward about homosexuality?

I think that a lot of times people in charge of corporations occasionally forget about making money making in order to appease their pissy and petty little agendas. Just look at how the Christian-run Chick-Fil-A is closed on Sundays; do you think they’re making any money?

  23. Elizabeth

I don’t know about Will and Grace, but I seem to remember two gay guys kissing on that Anne Heche sitcom in Alaska. Is that show even still on? And then there is Brothers and Sisters which has a prominent gay storyline. Those are primetime soaps, but I rarely watch those anymore either. Seems like people should be “desensitized” by now, if that is indeed the plan.

As old as I am, I can remember going through the same cultural change with interracial heterosexual couples. People either get used to it or they die off.

I am not sure though that I want to get used to teen/child pornography and incest like the Cyrus shoot for Vanity Fair. I think that Annie finally pushed the envelope a bit too far on that one.

  24. FashionablyEvil

Well, after doing that to you I certainly hope he’s in jail!

Actually, she would just talk about “deep kissing” while always using air quotes (the kind where you keep your fingers straight). Of course, not everyone has the same mental images as I do…

  25. rowmyboat

Wow, that was the lamest kiss possible, after all that hot and heavy fundie-freak out description. I was expecting something really good. So disappointed.

  26. the opoponax

which demographic would you rather piss off; homosexuals (6% of the population) or the flyover state middle America types who feel a little awkward about homosexuality?

Whichever demographic was spending more money at my theme park.

There are a lot of very middle class openly gay couples and families. Large swaths of rabidly homophobic America can’t afford to go to Disney, anyway. Though this is why they tend to encourage teh geys to concentrate their visits around gay-oriented events. That way they can get everyone’s money without pissing people off too much.

As for Chick-Fil-A, correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t they concentrated in the South and Midwest, parts of the country where things are often closed Sundays, anyway? Either way, my guess is that they’d stop doing it if it was really losing them money. It may actually help, if it cuts operating costs.

  27. Oh for Pete’s sake, that’s what had Don’s panties all up in a twist? The way that little “call for action” went, I was kind of expecting porn or something.

  28. Melissa

Thank jeebus they haven’t targeted SciFi and the Torchwood/Capatin Jack kisses and scenes. Those are HOT!

  29. “Here, folks, is the “explicit” kiss — maybe Don has access to some alternate hard core version we don’t know about.”

Only through the magic of Inner eye Cinema, as they say.

  30. denelian

    ??????
ok… um… the only reason that was “disgusting” is that it took waaaaaaaaaay too long to get to and was a really really really bad eaxample of a passionate kiss.

    worst. kiss. evar.

seriously, what the hell was WRONG that a bad kiss like that got through?

in other news… who watches soaps? NOT “impressionable children”. dumbfucks. soaps come on while kiddies are in school.

  31. Bitter Scribe

OT a little, Eric Zorn of the Chicago Tribune has an interesting post up about why he won’t use the word “homophobe” any more. I usually like Zorn, but I feel he’s being overly fastidious on this one.

  32. Criminintly. After all the hysteria, I expected a prolonged session of tonsil licking (which, truth be told, I could do without watching, no matter who’s participating).

I find it ironic that Wildmon and his lot don’t say a word about the non-marital sex scenes in soaps. One would think that actual adultery would be more of a threat to the “sanctity of marriage” than two consenting, fully-dressed adults snogging.

  33. GumbyAnne

They were actually looking around before kissing because the one with the dark hair is in a marriage for a green card and cant be found out as gay.

A few days ago these two characters had a scene in which they were jumping on the bed and then fell, panting, into eachothers arms. It was a pretty funny way to symbolize teh secks to those of us who will see it that way while still keeping up plausible deniability for the sake of the pearl-clutchers.

  34. “I find it ironic that Wildmon and his lot don’t say a word about the non-marital sex scenes in soaps. One would think that actual adultery would be more of a threat to the “sanctity of marriage” than two consenting, fully-dressed adults snogging.”

It’s strategy. You go after the gays first - higher probability of success. Then you go after the adulterers, etc.

You keep going down the list until soap operas look like Mary Poppins.

Except that all the women are wearing burqhas.

With the exception of the handmaids, who are dressed all in red…

“People either get used to it or they die off.”

Can’t happen a minute too soon.

Oh, I’m sorry, was that un-civil?

  36. As opposed to the homersectuals invading our prime-tiem smut screens, now they’re interrupting Granny’s stories! What next?

The AFA are a bunch of tools. I like to listen to American Family Radio because I’m a masochist, and a few weeks ago they were saying that it’s ridiculous for Mickey-D’s to cater to homosexuals because homosexuals have money and don’t eat at McDonald’s.

Excuse me, but I’ve seen quite a few queerfolk scarf down some Big Macs. And with our economy in shambles, everyone’s having to cut back on the foie gras!

  37. That was not an open mouth kiss.

That was opening his mouth, taking a breath, closing his mouth, and then kissing. No tongue whatsoever. No resemblance to any other soap opera kiss currently on TV today.

Man,I miss Buffy. Willow and Tara were teh awesome simply b/c they were written like any other characters. It waas no different for a scene where Willow kissed Tara than an earlier one where she kissed Oz.

I know Whedon ended it badly, but while it was on it was such a nice normal relationship (well, not counting the magic and vampires etc.)

It amazes me that so many years later it’s nearly impossible to see that ‘normal’ kind of kissing on network TV. I don’t watch Brothers and Sisters, so maybe they don’t make a big deal out of it or make their characters unrealistically chaste.

  38. the opoponax

It amazes me that so many years later it’s nearly impossible to see that ‘normal’ kind of kissing on network TV.

I’m going back through Buffy at the moment (well, over approximately the last 6 months’ worth of moments), and it never ceases to amaze me that we’ve actually gone backwards in terms of the kinds of images, especially the kinds of affectionate, loving, and/or healthily sexy images the mainstream media considers appropriate. When Buffy was on, I don’t even remember it being particularly controversial.

  39. the opoponax

Oh, and regarding Brothers And Sisters, I’ve seen it a few times and had no idea it was about gay issues at all or featured any gay characters. So I’d guess that, yes, said gay characters are probably portrayed as smooth as Ken dolls.

That said, I tend to just skim that show looking for scenes with Rachel Griffiths, who I think is smokin’ hot. I would probably only be aware of gay characters who often shared subplots with her.

Why can’t Griffiths be one of said queer characters?

  40. shartheheretic

    opoponax -

On Brothers And Sisters, one of the “Brothers” (A MAIN CHARACTER - OMG! Clutching of the pearls!) is gay, and he has had a couple major relationships on the show. IIRC, they have not made his character any LESS likely to kiss/make out/etc. with his significant other. Of course, I only watched it when said significant other was Jason Lewis (of Sex and the City fame - he played Samantha’s “boy toy” Smith). I would pretty much watch any show to see him do just about anything (or anyone, for that matter).

  41. shartheheretic

OT, yeah, that kiss was pretty lame…although I have seen some hetero kisses on soaps that were just as lame. Sometimes, it’s just bad acting.

  42. Got this via my post about the same:

You might want to add this: In response to heat they’re getting from the American Family Association, P&G is conducting a phone poll to see if people are for or against the Luke/Noah storyline on As The World Turns. Even if you don’t watch the show, please consider taking a quick moment to support boy kissing and thwart homophobic bigotry. The poll is completely automated. You don’t have to talk to anyone. And it really does take all of a second to register your opinion.

Just call 1-800-331-3774 and press #1 to continue in English (or #2 for Spanish), then 2 to get to the ATWT poll, then press 1 to continue the storyline.

Please spread the word if you’re so inclined. The fight for good has never been so simple! :)

  43. I’m wondering if there’s an Amway connection here, too.

Urban Legend followers will remember that some upper-level Amway distributors had a hard-on for their competitor P&G and were actually found guilty of spreading the “devil worship” rumors.

Chick-Fil-A has stores in a couple of the malls I go to on Sundays. Nothing else is closed then, so they’re clearly not getting some business they could otherwise.

But I have to wonder if they get “Christians who live their principles” cred with some potential customers.

And don’t discount the effect on employees. I have noticed some of them are bible-bangers, so maybe it’s a good tradeoff — reduce the hours you’re open, and in return get employees who think you’re a superChristian company and will be more obedient as a result. If it cuts turnover and absenteeism, it may well be worth it.

They’re only losing seven hours of business anyway — noon to 7pm, compared to 10am to 10pm.

  44. Starscream

I want my kids to be protected from that acting.

  45. Let’s hop into the Wayback Machine to 1983, shall we?

HER LESBIAN ROLE IS A FIRST FOR THE SOAPS

    Gail Shister, Inquirer Staff Writer
    November 3, 1983

When ABC’s “All My Children” approached Donna Pescow about playing daytime television’s first admitted lesbian, her immediate reaction was ‘’Bravo!”

Pescow, 29, a Brooklyn native, plays child psychologist Lynn Carson on the popular ABC soap. In her eight-week role, Carson will become platonic roommates with Devon McFadden (played by Tricia Pursley).

“Lynn comes to Pine Valley to start fresh after a long relationship with a woman,” says Pescow of her character. “She’s well-adjusted, successful, a very real person. I’m making sure she is, and so are the writers. She’s just as colorful as anyone else.

“The fact that she’s gay makes her more defined in her personality, because she’s content and happy with that. She doesn’t hide her sexuality, nor does she broadcast it, unless necessary. We’ll tackle other characters’ reactions to her being gay, as well as questions of their own feelings.”

Pescow began her career at ABC in 1976 with a bit part in “One Life to Live.” A year later, she achieved fame as John Travolta’s humiliated and abused dance partner in Saturday Night Fever.

Has Pescow had any second thoughts about taking on such a controversial part?

“I’ve established who I am as an actress,” she says. “I pray I would never get categorized for one role. When Billy Crystal played a sympathetic homosexual character on ‘Soap,’ he had to undo a stereotype of him and his work. If anything, this role may open doors for me.

“My chief concern is that my character is portrayed in a way that is real and not cartoon-like and stereotyped. I think it will educate people. The real purpose of this story line is to say that homosexuality exists. It can’t be brushed under the carpet or be taboo anymore. The public is ready. They’re more aware now than 10 years ago that Main Street, U.S.A., doesn’t exist. Being gay is not as unhip as maybe it’s been perceived to be.”

Philadelphian Agnes Nixon, creator of “All My Children” and a half-dozen other soaps, decided to introduce an openly gay character because “we thought it was time. When I say time, I don’t just mean 1983. It also works within the story and the characters.”

Nixon’s soaps, particularly “All My Children,” have a reputation for tackling previously untouchable social issues such as venereal disease, interracial dating, drug abuse, teenage prostitution and child abuse. Nixon labels the introduction of Lynn Carson as “a calculated risk,” denying that it’s a ploy to boost the soap’s already strong ratings.

“Part of a soap opera’s function, besides entertainment, is as a public service to stir controversy and make people think,” she says. “If you think you have to please everybody, then stay out of the kitchen. If some viewers hate us for this story, maybe they’ll like us for another.”

  46. the opoponax

They’re only losing seven hours of business anyway — noon to 7pm, compared to 10am to 10pm.

That’s more along the lines of what I was thinking. I’m sure it doesn’t lose them money, and depending on how it influences the way they do things, it may actually help out in certain ways. And certainly if they thought it would make a big difference, they would change the policy.

For instance, a few days ago I saw some of the new Dr. Bronner’s bottles, redesigned to look just like any other hand soap. Clearly the company thinks that they can sell a lot more soap if they offer a less wacky packaging option. And they’re not going to stand by and lose part of the market by sticking to their guns on the hippy-dippy stuff.

  47. vervain

The only thing that was offensive about that kiss was the complete and utter lack of chemistry between the two actors.

  48. Flamethorn

Yeah, pretty much what Vervain just said. It looked like the shorter guy didn’t even want to be kissing the other guy, which makes it a bit beyond awkward.

I’m happy that there is gay kissing on soap operas, but sad to see that the acting is still terrible.

  49. Mnemosyne

When Buffy was on, I don’t even remember it being particularly controversial.

Oh, it was plenty controversial — be glad you missed all of the homophobic fanboys (and -girls) celebrating on message boards after Tara was murdered. But since the whole show was about the supernatural, the gay stuff was considered all of a piece with the demons and such.

As far as Chick-Fil-A goes, I don’t care if a company decides to do things in line with their principles, as long as they’re not hypocrites. Making their non-Christian employees work on Sundays while the Christians get the day off would be hypocritical — giving all of the employees the day off isn’t.

It’s like In-N-Out Burger here in California. Yes, they put (very very tiny) references to Bible verses on their beverage cups. (Fairly obscure ones, too — I’ve never seen John 3:16 on there).

But they also pay far more than any other fast food company and include health insurance and other benefits that you don’t get with other low-wage jobs. So at least they’re trying to act like Christians ought to act and not just complaining about how other people should act.

  50. ShelbyWoo

Yeah, pretty much what Vervain just said. It looked like the shorter guy didn’t even want to be kissing the other guy, which makes it a bit beyond awkward

The shorter guy is Luke (Van Hansis) and he is one of the better actors on soaps. He generally comes across as very comfortable and loving in his scenes with his boyfriend. As someone else pointed out, they are supposed to be hiding the fact that they are a couple because of the lameass fake-marriage-for-a-green-card storyline going on. So, I think that scene was supposed to be awkward. And, who knows what kind of direction they were give for that scene considering their first kiss was months and months ago (7 months, I believe someone said) and then nothing. Their first kiss was much more passionate (my husband and I both let out cheers when we saw it), I’m sure it’s on youtube.

I was so excited (and I wasn’t alone, majority of the fans were excited too) about this couple after their initial kiss, I thought they would get the typical couple treatment – As the World Turns totally dropped the ball on this one – and purposely, it seems.

  51. Jennifer

As the World Turns totally dropped the ball on this one – and purposely, it seems.

    http://www.soapoperadigest.com/features/atwt/goutman-luke-noah-kiss/

That’s an interview by Soap Opera Digest with the executive producer of the show. He claims all they get is positive feedback and they most definitely are not keeping the boys from kissing, and the world is full of hearts and flowers and everything’s just wonderful and why would you even think he was lying? He really just could not sound more full of it if he tried.

The kiss itself is taken out of context here — Noah is in a green-card marriage and they can’t be seen kissing. (And if the acting’s bad and the kiss is awkward, after seven months of making-out celibacy, who’s surprised?) It’s not supposed to be shameful, but intentionally or unintentionally the show’s made all three of their kisses occur at times that seem to have been intended to be seen as shameful. The first time Noah had a girlfriend. The second time, they were caught by his homophobic father who promptly had a fit. (The same man also went on to assault Luke, causing him to be paralyzed from the waist down for a few months. Oh, and he also paralyzed Luke’s lips, since he and Noah were dating during that time with the support of everyone around them and they STILL weren’t kissing.) And now this time they can’t be seen or the annoying plot device Noah married might be sent back to Iraq.

A lot of the things they’ve gone through pinpoint a lot of the reasons I stopped watching soaps, or at least American ones. There’s a gay couple in a German soap, Christian and Olli (their story is up on Youtube with English subtitles), that I prefer much more simply for the organic growth of the relationship. Christian was straight until Olli came along and Christian fell in love with him. The two of them don’t kiss in public, but only because Christian has yet to tell his brother (his only family) and is working up to it, not from any shame on his part. It’s really a lovely story where the drama comes from more realistic plot points than Luke and Noah, and they kiss all the time.
