As Richard at All Spin Zone notes, shouldn’t there be an investigation by officials into this? Inciting a riot is a felony. Here’s Rushbo:

He said the riots would ensure a Democrat is not elected as president, and his listeners have a responsibility to make sure it happens.

“Riots in Denver, the Democrat Convention would see to it that we don’t elect Democrats,” Limbaugh said during Wednesday’s radio broadcast. He then went on to say that’s the best thing that could happen to the country…

…Limbaugh said with massive riots in Denver, which he called “Operation Chaos,” the people on the far left would look bad.

“We do, hopefully, the right thing for the sake of this country. We’re the only one in charge of our affairs. We don’t farm out our defense if we elect Democrats … and riots in Denver, at the Democratic Convention will see to it we don’t elect Democrats. And that’s the best damn thing that can happen to this country, as far as I can think,” Limbaugh said…

Richard:
Someone needs to tell me the difference between Rush Limbaugh and Moqtada al-Sadr (above and beyond the fact that al-Sadr is an ordained cleric, and Limbaugh is just an ordained asswipe). And I want to know how Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Ann Coulter, etc. etc. can continue getting away with inspiring their listeners to violence, yet are never called on it by either the Republican Party leadership or law enforcement authorities.

If you feel so moved, you can contact the Colorado Attorney General’s office and express your concerns. At a minimum, inciting to riot is a serious offense. When the call goes out from someone of Limbaugh’s stature, who has legions of loyal dittoheads hanging on his every word, it’s very, very likely that his “call to arms” could motivate some right wing crackpots to action.

Note this is not an exaggeration — Mr. Hillbilly Heroin could be in a heap of trouble. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper realizes that a line has been crossed, saying “Anyone who would call for riots in an American city has clearly lost their bearings.”

Why does Rush Limbaugh hate America?

Rush is such a class act, raising the political discourse and turning down the race rhetoric as well - we’ll see more of this down the road:

Limbaugh:…Obama is holding his own against both of them - doing more than his share of the “spade” work. Maybe even gaining ground at the moment. Using not only the spade ladies and gentleman-that when he finishes with the “spade” in the garden of corruption planted by the Clinton’s, he turns to the “hoe.” And so the spade work and his expertise using a hoe.

  1. OT but giving Pam a head’s up:

I left the following comment in the discussion at Holly’s post on feministe:

I’ve been wondering about where Pam Spalding is, too.

I’m a regular commenter at Pandagon who doesn’t have a feminist blog worthy of the name — pretty much all I post on my blog are copies of comments I make on other people’s blogs, to keep track of the conversations I’m in.

Last week I didn’t have time to read all the 200+ comment threads where this was being discussed, so I decided to wimp out and follow Pam’s lead, because I think of her as my link into the POC blogosphere. I thought, “as long as Pam’s happy, I’ll assume there’s nothing I need to investigate in greater depth.” But I’ve felt uncomfortable enough to make a point of commenting on other Pandagonian’s posts more than Amanda’s.

    I know, I know, OK?

Anyway, Holly’s post here has sealed the deal for me. Unless & until Pam — for whom I still have enormous respect until proven otherwise — gives me a persuasive reason to come back, I won’t be commenting at Pandagon any more.

You know how all of us Gen-Xers keep talking about how we wish Baby Boomers would stop living in the past by, say, calling for riots at the Democratic convention just like the Chicago riots of 1968?

This is the kind of stuff we’re talking about. Why is Limbaugh still fighting against the dirty fucking hippies of his youth rather than dealing with what’s going on in the world today?

  3. Soon…Brown Shirts and Kristallnacht

“On the nights of November 9 and 10, rampaging mobs throughout Germany …. freely attacked Jews in the street,
in their homes [,at their conventions] and at their places of work and worship.”

Jews then , us soon. Kristallnacht

  4. Would anyone else be interested in picking a day, getting as many people with blogs as we can, and all posting about this and other Limbaugh calls to fascism on the same day with the same headline?

    “Rush Limbaugh Hates Democracy”

Another key quote from the link:

‘Several callers called in to the radio show to denounce Limbaugh’s comments, when he later stated, “I am not inspiring or inciting riots, I am dreaming of riots in Denver.”‘

Sure, just as Ann Coulter was not calling Edwards gay, or calling for Justice Stevens to be poisoned, or for Tim McVeigh to nuke the NYT building.

  6. NotAMorningPerson

Surely there’s an FCC regulation that’s been violated here, too. Does anyone know?

  7. mwg

He must be back on the hillbilly heroin again. We’ll see if this actually gets him in trouble–he skated on the drug charges, after all. I don’t understand how he looks himself in the mirror.

    Reverend Right.

above and beyond the fact that al-Sadr is an ordained cleric, and Limbaugh is just an ordained asswipe

A bit of a nit here, and I can’t speek for asswipes, but Islam abhors the idea of an official priesthood and, thus, doesn’t ordain clerics. Imams and mullahs are proclaimed by the body of believers not by an official hierarchy.

  10. jon

    Sarcastro,

I hate to send a mite to pick at your nit, but Shiite Islam has more of an ordained religious hierarchy than the Sunni tradition. Maybe not quite to the level of “ordained”, but certainly not on the “abhors” wavelength.

  11. I’m creating a petition over at Care2 that will be sent to the RNC’s Chairman urging him to denounce Limbaugh’s call to fascism. I’ll post a link here when it’s up and running.

  12. This is the letter I drafted for the petition to the RNC. If anyone has suggestions to make it better, please let me know.

    Mr. Duncan,

Recently, Rush Limbaugh exhorted his listeners to incite riots at the Democratic National Convention, stating that “Riots in Denver . . . would see to it that we don’t elect Democrats,” and that he is “dreaming of riots in Denver.”

Previously, he has called upon his listeners to take part in “Operation Chaos” in order to disrupt the Democrat Party’s process. By calling for riots as part of this “Operation Chaos,” Mr. Limbaugh has crossed all lines of decency and morality and is blatantly suggesting tactics that are used by fascist and tyrannical governments. Such rhetoric and tactics should be loathsome to all patriotic Americans, regardless of their party affiliation.

We the undersigned urge you to publicly denounce the brutish and un-American tactics that Mr. Limbaugh is suggesting. Please let Americans of all parties and political affiliations know that the Republican National Party still believes in democracy and that Mr. Limbaugh’s call for political violence is unacceptable.

Thank you for your time and consideration to this matter.

  13. Sarcastro

Tru dat Jon, it’s like usury in Islam… they just call it a “handling fee” instead of “interest”. Shi’a has a system but they’re very careful not to call it a priesthood. The Koran is quite specific on both those issues, but the garment of Islam fits in odd ways sometimes I suppose.

  14. Rush dreams of riots?

I dream of rioting Limbots being given several doses of baton rounds in the groin and face.

  15. loneoak

    To the CO Attorney General:

“I intend to attend and participate in the Democratic Convention in Denver this August. However, following Rush Limbaugh’s open incitement to violence against attendees and against the city of Denver, I am reconsidering my visit to your state. It is unconscionable, and I suspect illegal, for a public figure of his stature to call for massive violence against other Americans. Unless there are proactive attempts on your office’s part to insist that Limbaugh cease and desist such threats—and investigate whether he broke the law in doing so—I am disinclined to visit Denver this August out of fear for my safety.”

NB: I’m not actually attending, but might as well make it about tourism $.

  16. The question of why Rush Limbaugh hates America is a good one and it should be asked over and over. The greatest strength of America is its unity, and that’s the very thing he attacks most often. Don’t get together, because roughly half of the nation is horrible and evil and must be stopped. He knows he damages the nation, but he gets paid for it.

I find it doubly disgusting that he honestly doesn’t care; he’s an inveterate bullshitter. It’s awful when a true believer pulls crap like this, but serving a cause, even a terrible cause, seems just a tiny bit nobler than serving simple greed.

  17. Ms Kate

Of course rush dreams of riots … doing any more than that would be, like, other than dreaming of the Vietnam war and other than dreaming about a pro football career. Saves all the work and actual risk that way.

  18. Pollyanna

    Dear Peter,

One suggestion pertaining to your letter:

We don’t live in a “democracy.” We live in a Representative REPUBLIC. The Forefathers who wrote our Constitution said a “democracy” was the worst form of Government and found it to be abhorant.

Remember? “I pledge allegiance to the flag and to the REPUBLIC for which it stands….”

    Otherwise, it’s a great letter!

  19. Pink Dinkins

If I look up choad in my trusty College Dictionary, will I find Limbaugh’s picture?

  20. If anyone wants to see if we can get the RNC to denounce Limbaugh, you can sign my petition at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/republicans-to-denounce-limbaugh.

  21. Pink Dinkins

Let me add if I hadn’t made clear: I support the arrest, conviction, and severe punishment of anyone who advocates that others break things, set things on fire, or deface the property of others.

  22. Olivia

“Let me add if I hadn’t made clear: I support the arrest, conviction, and severe punishment of anyone who advocates that others break things, set things on fire, or deface the property of others. ”

I second that. These types of comments on national radio should be treated very seriously. It was just this type of talk by radio DJs in Rawanda that helped push the genocide there.

  23. Anna Bobanna

I think it’s really important we all tell people about this. I have not heard about this anywhere except the liberal blogs, and that troubles me. I hope we can spread the word on this, because I would hate to see Limbaugh actually affect anything else that happens in this election. Or in this country.
