I’ve had that neighbor. The narrator, not the subject.

  18. I won’t bore everybody with a random 10 of my music…

But I am curious what the Pandagon IMS’s think of Dropkick Murphys, the latest Raconteurs - ‘Salute Your Solution’, the latest REM - ‘Supernatural Superserious’, and other new stuff I’m hearing on Internet radio (been really enjoying WBCN in Boston)…

I’m not an IMS, and I tend to like most R.E.M (even “Up” and “Around the Sun”, which I and probably two other people in the world like), so I’m definitely not the one to evaluate “Supernatural Superserious”
    objectively!

  21. holly e. r.

ah, yeah…I loved The Jesus and Mary Chain- and “Creep” by Afghan Whigs is so amazing. Maybe I just think Greg Dulli can do no wrong.
Speaking of Dulli, I seem to have a lot of anger in this mix, this week.

  22. mwg

Okay, it just looks like I need to charge the damn battery on the ipod.

I actually knew Greg Dulli somewhat in college. The singer in one of my bands dated the Whigs’ first drummer (Steve Earle), and the Whigs played at a party at my house when they were starting out. He was a bit of an asshole then, I can’t imagine it’s gotten any better. They were good, though (at least through Gentlemen).

I didn’t think they were the best band that played in southwestern Ohio at the time, though. Anybody remember the Royal Crescent Mob? They were incredible live. They could never translate that into the studio, though.

  23. MikeEss,

For internet radio, I highly recommend KEXP (kexp.org). Their weekday daytime shows are mostly new alt rock, but they have a ton of specialty shows - punk, alt country, rockabilly, world, etc. - and it’s all really well done. Even their pledge weeks are eminently listenable. The playlist is immense & constantly changing, so you won’t hear the same few songs over and over for years.

    As to my opinions:
Dropkick Murphys - I love them. But then, I’m partial to celtic influenced punk

REM - as good as anything else they’ve done, IMO. All REM sounds pretty much alike to me. They have a few songs that stand out, but they definitely have their sound and if you like their sound, you like their sound.

    And, please. Bore me.

  29. If you like WBCN (I think there’s too much DJ posturing these days), you’ll like WEQX (out of Manchester, VT).
If the 1980’s were your 1967, then you must be some time-slipper (one year=a decade?).

    Anyway, my random duo 10:

  33. As a GIGANTIC fan of the bulk of R.E.M.’s output, I have to say that New Adventures In Hi-Fi was created almost entirely of llama shit. I don’t blame Bill Berry for leaving after that one. They’ve been hit-n-miss since then, though the gems are still quite dazzling when they show up. My impression of the new one thus far is more positive, but I haven’t heard the whole thing. Here’s hoping…

  42. Sarcastro

They’ve been hit-n-miss since then, though the gems are still quite dazzling when they show up.

Shit, I’ve considered them hit-n-miss since Fables… at the latest.

Speaking of lack of consistency, I just read about Elton John playing a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton and all I could think of was a quote from Garth Merengue’s Dark Place:

“She was like a candle in the wind… unreliable.”

  43. The Crapture

Mighty PonyGirl: it’s kind of funny…even though i’m always looking for new, interesting music, there is always a large section of my playlists organized and run by my inner goth-boy (born the day my brother made me a copy of his Siouxsie and the Banshees “Tinderbox” tape back when i was in high school…and still evident on those days when i feel a little goofy and wear my black eyeliner and nail polish to the office)

Sarcastro: good to see another Dark Place fan…i didn’t want to like that show on first glance, but it grew on me, too bad there is not more of it.

  45. Aw… thanks Dwyn!

Charlie and I heard “Kokomo” for the first time the day after we met in August 1988 and it’s been “our song” ever since! :)

And now our kids are old enough to roll their eyes when we hear it and tell them that- for the millionth time…

  46. prospero

  48. This podcast I listen to played some of REM live from SXSW playing “Fall On Me”, and I had two thoughts: Their new stuff is weak and this song gives me shivers, it’s so good. It’s sort of amazing how they managed to pull off lyrical conceits that, on paper, sound really stupid. Acid rain as a metaphor for (fill in how the song speak to you)! I’d roll my eyes, but maybe it’s the melody. It’s a gorgeous song. I still can’t listen to “Country Death Song” without getting weepy. It’s a country classic, imo. It’s like listening to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”—gets me every time.

I once again glanced through your list and the lists of the posters. Once again I am disappointed because there seems to be nothing but pop music.

Don’t you guys ever listen to opera, symphony, classical piano, and related?

If there were any foreign language songs, and there may have been, I missed them.

Mostly, you seem to have rather limited tastes.

  55. squashed

amazon.com has pretty good recommendation list. Opera makes me sleepy (19th century large voice work in general) Too convoluted and the voicing is too unnatural.

  56. mwg

Well, I do have Brazilian music, some afropop and some rai that didn’t make it into that selection, as well as a bunch of classical music that I haven’t ripped yet. Any selection of 10 songs is going to be waited towards pop regardless.

    But let’s see your list…

Mostly, you seem to have rather limited tastes.

    Them’s fightin’ words.

I’ve never posted one of these. What does iTunes choose today?

    1. M’bife (balafon)-Amadou & Mariam
    2. Hot and Bothered-Duke Ellington
    3. Change in Speak-De La Soul
    4. Vater Unser Im Himmelreich-J.S. Bach
    5. Begin the Beguine-Artie Shaw
    6. La La Love You-Pixies
    7. Ohne dich-Silbermond
    8. Tastar de corde-Joanambrosio Dalza
    9. 2 In Der Tinte(Feat. MissVerständnis)-Rückgrat (”tough guy” Austrian rappers)
    10. Loom-Ani DiFranco

I’m surprised more classical didn’t come up. The Dalza is a short keyboard improvisation from the early baroque.

And speaking of classical. I have about 800-900 classical CDs. I don’t put a lot of classical on my iPod, because I did the first month and was stuck listening to the Scherzo from Beethoven’s Third Symphony 11 times before any of the other movements came up. Drove me crazy. So then I started putting multi-movement works together on one track. But when something as phenomenal as the Franck Violin Sonata would start playing on the last five minutes of my dog walking, I would sigh and press forward because I won’t be listening for another hour. I put some lieder, short harpsichord works and baroque opera arias on my iPod, but that’s about it. I don’t know how the Bach ended up there; I don’t remember putting it on.

In sum, I use the player for short, pop or pop-like songs, usually as an accompaniment to motion (walking, cleaning). For Classical, I prefer a time and a piece of my own choosing for active listening while at rest.

  58. mwg

Ur, weighted towards pop. Apparently I need to recharge my brain as well.

  59. squashed

not to mention iPod AAC/mp3 compression is completely atrocious. They should ban 128kbps or lower compression as cultural crime.

I can’t hear jack for high quality electronic music.

  60. squashed

awesome clip. definitely must see. (man I wish pandagon allow user to embed youtube. :D )

  61. bernarda

mwg, maybe not found on youtube

Susan Graham, “Voi Che Sapete” - Mozart

    Bach - Brandenburg Concertos

Bach - Goldenberg Variations by Glenn Gould

    Satie - Gymnopedies

    Sibelius - Symphony 7

    Tania Libertad - No Valentin

    Susana Baca - Zamba Malaté

Gilbert and Sullivan - I am the Monarch of the Sea from HMS Pinafore.

Jeann Moreau - J’ai la mémoire qui flanche

Serge Gainsbourg - Aux armes et caetera

There’s ten I think. I just chose at the moment. There are so many more. I would be surprised if the first by Susan Graham does not bring tears to your eyes, even not knowing the language.

  62. Sarcastro

Sarcastro: good to see another Dark Place fan…i didn’t want to like that show on first glance, but it grew on me, too bad there is not more of it.

There is… kinda. Man to Man With Dean Learner has Richard Ayoade reprising his “real world” demi-role from GM’sDP but as a talk-show host. Every guest is played by Matthew Holness, including as Garth Marenghi in the 1st episode.

If anything it’s even more obtuse than Dark Place but very funny once it sinks in.
