The long hiatus of “Battlestar Galactica” has sent fans into a speculation frenzy, and I think that’s going to cause some inevitable disappointment when the first episode of the last season airs tonight, and only a little bit of the various mysteries is revealed. I’m sure we’re going to have to wait until the end to find out what’s up with Starbuck and who the last Cylon is. And above all, what is the Cylon plan? Are there different Cylons with different plans? We won’t be much wiser come Saturday morning, which is something to keep in mind. Unfortunately, there’s going to be a hiatus between the first and second halves of the season, due to the writer’s strike, as well. This is going to be a slow tease.

Ten songs at random from your MP3 playing device.

  1. “Gimme Danger”—Iggy Pop
  2. “Hock It”—The Blow
  3. “Toothpaste”—The Martial Arts
  4. “Nightclubbing”—Iggy Pop (my iPod has a preference today)

  7. “I Want You Back”—Jackson 5

  8. It’s not going to be a huge letdown for me because I thought most of post-New Caprica Season 3 was kind of ass. I don’t care who the last Cylon is, because (1) at least one of the four revealed in the last episode makes no sense at all, chronologically… those of you who have seen it know who I’m talking about and (2) apart from giving Lucy Lawless a nosebleed, they appear to have no function apart from injecting unneeded mystery into the show.

    1. My Wife and Women by Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup
    2. Can’t You Find Another Way by Sam and Dave
    3. Over and Over by Neil Young and Crazy Horse

I’m way too excited for this season of BSG; so far behind on papers, and stayed out too late last night (birthdays + friends happen). BSG! BSG! BSG!

um, I keep hoping my crush Kara will be half-cylon, given her mother’s inexplicable hatred of Starbuck’s dad, and Starbuck’s visions. Oh, and that she and Apollo (my other crush) will end up together. Pretty sure one of those two things will happen.

    okay:

    1. Heavens to Betsy- “Paralyzed”- yea! perfect Spring sound!
    2. Mission of Burma- “That’s How I Escaped My Certain Fate”
    3. Alec Empire- “Point of No Return” Mr. ATR
    4. Blonde Rehead- “Down Under”
    5. Sebadoh- “My Decision”
    6. The Vanishing- “Obituary”

Why, oh why, did I drop my cable right after BSG started? I’m now hopelessly out of the loop. Lot of DVD investment capital to get caught up, too. Time to yell at the kids in the yard…

  19. Erin Myers

I am a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica. I have been watching the show since season 1 premiere, and caught up on the mini-series afterwards. Not since Babylon 5 have I seen a show so meticulously planned out from the beginning. Not a loose end is left untied. It is clear that Ron Moore knows what he’s doing, and is not simply meandering from season to season aimlessly.

After the first four episodes of season 2, on Kobol, a bolt from the blue hit me. I got it. I understood what was happening. I knew what Ron Moore had planned, and it was pure, unadulterated genius. But I told no one, other than my wife, because it sounded… well, crazy, to be honest. I posted on no forums, told no other people my suspicions. But season 2 and season 3 only continued to confirm my faith in Ron Moore.

So here, for the first time, is what I understand to be happening in Battlestar Galactica. And I warn you right now, if you read past the break, it will forever change the way you view this show. It will color every episode, every character interaction, and will completely rewrite what you think about the last two seasons.

Have I built this up enough? Good. Here come the spoilers. Any errors are totally due to my faulty memory.

“This has all happened before. This will all happen again.”

    “…And they have a plan.”

Those are the key phrases to understanding. How many times was that first line repeated throughout season 1? Again and again. And it is probably the most important line that anyone has spoken, and always by a cylon.

“We know your gods better than you do.” The cylons have always claimed a superiority over the humans about their religion. They say that the humans have a false religion, and that the cylons worship the one true god. Why? To create a dichotomy between polytheists and monotheists?

When the characters went down to Kobol at the end of season 1 and the beginning of season 2, a lot about their past was revealed. Kobol was where the men and the twelve gods lived together in peace and harmony. However, something happened, and the humans were exiled from Kobol. One of the gods, in her grief, threw herself from a high cliff and killed herself, showing that the gods were mortal, and capable of death.

The humans scattered to twelve planets, one for each of the twelve gods. A thirteenth colony, where the humans presumably pledged allegiance to no god, went off to form Earth.

At the end of the miniseries, Adama found a note in his quarters. “There are twelve models.” He does not know who put the note there, and that note has never been followed up on.

When the “Razor” special aired, we saw that the old model cylons from the original series are part of the mythos of the current BSG.

    Are you with me yet?

    * The twelve cylon models are the twelve gods.
    * This is a cycle of war and destruction and rebirth that happens again and again.
    * After the recurring war of genocide, the remaining people go off to find Earth, the lost thirteenth colony.
    * Humanity settles on a new planet, which is Earth. That new planet becomes Kobol.
    * The cylons, not quite human, become the image of the new gods. Athena, Apollo, etc.
    * Eventually, conflict causes the dissolution of Kobol. Twelve colonies are created, each one full of humans following the way/path/personality of one of the cyclon “gods”. A thirteenth colony, wishing to follow no cylon god, goes off to form Earth.
    * The original series happened in the same “universe” as the current BSG, and was the iteration of the cycle right before the current one.
    * And it all happens again.

We won’t be much wiser come Saturday morning…

If you think you’ll be any wiser after the show ends, I admire your optimism.

  21. diedra

Having just watched the new BSG on scifi.com, I have to say it was very good. It flew by and I couldn’t believe it when it was already over. Granted, it’s only the start to the season and doesn’t say much to whether they’ll answer all the questions in a satisfying way, but it was a very strong beginning.

  24. ShelbyWoo

    the matthew show:

Why, oh why, did I drop my cable right after BSG started? I’m now hopelessly out of the loop. Lot of DVD investment capital to get caught up, too.

    One word…

    Netflix

  25. ShelbyWoo,

Genius. This is why I post here.

  26. Dr. Locrian

Slightly off topic, but about Netflix:

I finally joined a few months ago, and for a while everything was perfect. But recently, EVERYTHING that I really want to see gets that LONG WAIT or SHORT WAIT tag attached. I’ve been waiting literally months to get the Critierion Two Lane Blacktop, MI-5 season 4, Death Note Vol 1, and a bunch of others. Not to mention the agony of being 1 disc behind everyone else in getting The Wire Sea. 4. I still love using it, but I just don’t get why I have to wait so long to get specific DVD’s.

  27. I watched it streaming on scifi.com, too, diedra, and I have to agree…it’s a very strong beginning. It makes me very excited for the rest of the season…I just hope I’ll be able to watch it all…

    Bonus tracks:
    a. Arthur Lee & Love - “alone again)
    b. Franz Ferdinand - “darts of pleasure”
    c. House of Love - “i don’t know why i love you”

  29. I finally joined a few months ago, and for a while everything was perfect. But recently, EVERYTHING that I really want to see gets that LONG WAIT or SHORT WAIT tag attached.

Netflix does this on purpose. The first few months is the honeymoon period, where they try to convince you to continue with the service, so they’ll send you everything as soon as you request it (or as soon as possible, anyway). Then if you’re the kind of person who orders a lot of movie, they put you in a separate queue and *purposedly* slow down your ability to receive new movies.

The ‘unlimited rental’ thing is bull. They limit it, on purpose, and give you the impression that it’s unlimited. Worse than that, they lie to you by making you believe that you do have unlimited rentals during your honeymoon period. It’s deceptive advertisement.

  30. Oh, and just so you know, the reasoning behind that policy is that it’s the only way they can make a profit because otherwise their postage costs would be too high. I wouldn’t mind, really, if they just *told* you that you’d have limited service, instead of trying to mislead you.

  31. c.

I’ll chime in with those who saw the streaming cast on scifi.com - SO GOOD.

I surely don’t really have any answers, but man that was cool. It made up for the crappy filler episodes of season 3… and I read somewhere that there shouldn’t be any more of those! Just pure, unadulterated awesomeness that is the story arcs…

  32. veronica

For what it’s worth, in a sort of perverse way, I love it when shows go on hiatus, or when a cult show gets canceled, because then the frustrated online fanfic rises to new levels of ridiculous. Hell, even the gaps between Harry Potter books were more entertaining than the books themselves that way.

    10. Hold Your Head Up High - Miri Ben-Ari
    9. Dreaming - Blondie
    8. Umabarauma - Jorge Ben
    7. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough - Diana Ross, the Supremes, and The Temptations

    BTW, Halfnelson became Sparks.

  34. Totally different experience from BlackBloc. I’ve been a Netflix subscriber for over four years and I’ve never had more than 1-2% of the movies on my queue listed as long or short wait.

Netflix used to put you on a slower rotation if you went above a certain number of returns per month but I believe they’ve either stopped it, or they’ve started to tell you they do it, because they got sued for it.

  35. Wow, the Shocking Blue. I remember requesting Venus and Hot Sands (I have the 45) back in the 1980s to see if we (with my brother) could get it into rotation on WBCN. We actually did and about a year later, Bananarama came out with their version. I take credit. Venus by SB on youtube has 626,000 hits–none of the people who answered the phones for BCN had heard of them. Are they well known in other parts of the country?

Anyway, here’s my random (duo) 10:

California Stars by Billy Bragg & Wilco
    Hello by Oasis
I’ve Got A Woman by Ray Charles
Tell Me When It’s Over by Dream Syndicate
    Sing Your Life by Morrissey
Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On by Little Richard
I Don’t Even Know Myself by The Who
The Perfect Crime #2 by The Decemberists
    Prefabricated Icon by X-Ray Spex
    Let Go! by Gigolo Aunts
    Roadhouse Blues by The Doors
Sex Beat by The Gun Club

  36. Jonathan Hohensee

    1. Jump Jive And Wail - Stray Cats
    2. Dust to Dust - The Misfits
    3. Wonderful Wonderful Day - Seven Brides for Seven Brother
    4. That’s Amore - Dean Martin
    5. Tiny Bubbles - Dean Martin
    6. Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself Again - Sly and the Family Stone
    7. Pity The Child-Chess: The Musical (London Cast)
    8. To Them These Streets Belong - Rise Against
    9. Sad Song - Super Mario PRG
Embassy Lament - Chess: The Musical (The Actors’ Fund Of America Concert)

My iTunes has the complete albums from 4 different versions of the musical Chess (Broadway, West End, Original, and Concert) totaling 95 songs. It pops up a quite a bit in the shuffle.
