Let’s bring the homobigotry closer to home. In my state, we have our own little junior Matt Barber/Sally Kern.

Thankfully Mary Francis Forrester isn’t an elected official, but she is the wife of anti-gay North Carolina State Senator, Jim Forrester (R-Gaston). More on him later.

She’s also a public homophobe — Mrs. Forrester is the legislative liaison and media coordinator for Concerned Women for America of North Carolina (she was also its former director). I think that tells you where this is going. She scribed a ridiculous, color-by-numbers screed on the predatory Homosexual Agenda that Matt Hill Comer of Q-Notes fact-checked and shredded.

Forrester, writing on the Christian Action League web site, selectively cited a piece in the defunct Gay Community News from 1987 as “proof” that the Homosexual Agenda has put into place its long-term vision of taking over.

More after the jump.

From The Winds: p.4, “Homosexual Agenda in the Schools,” a snippet of the scary language Forrester is getting the vapors over:

We shall sodomize your sons…We shall seduce them in your schools, in your dormitories, in your gymnasiums, in your locker rooms…in your youth groups…Your sons shall become our minions and do our bidding…They will come to crave and adore us. All laws banning homosexual activity will be revoked. Instead legislation shall be passed which engenders love between men. Our writers and artists will make love between men fashionable…We shall raise private armies…to defeat you. The family unit will be abolished. Perfect boys will be conceived and grown in the genetic laboratory…All churches who condemn us will be closed.
Now any thinking person would realize that this is exaggeration/hyperbole, and Forrester certainly must have been aware of this — Matt Comer dug up the original source material; she conveniently left off the introduction of the article.
This essay is an outré, madness, a tragic, cruel fantasy, an eruption of inner rage, on how the oppressed desperately dream of being the oppressor.
Absent that intro, this is how Forrester framed her piece:
My fellow Christians, make no mistake. It is under the guise of tolerance that the homosexual agenda is seeking to change the course of Western Civilization, redefine the family and rob our children of their innocence.

The Ten Commandments has been the legal code of the Western World for over 2000 years by the Western calendar, and over 5000 years by the Hebrew calendar. They have served as the standard for social and legal justice in America for over 200 years.

…Did you know that the average life span of a homosexual is 39 years as opposed to 78 for heterosexual women and 76 for heterosexual men?

WHAT? Doesn’t that seem very familiar? Oh yes, she’s citing the discredited research of anti-gay Paul Cameron. His paper on this matter of lifespan was debunked for its absurd methodology, but it doesn’t stop the right from citing it time and again. The Southern Poverty Law Center has named Cameron’s Colorado Springs-based Family Research Institute as an active hate group.

And Forrester, no lie, wrote this — perhaps it is what gave Sally Kern inspiration:

Read your social history and you will find that most societies that condoned homosexual behavior did not survive past one generation.
Go read the rest of Matt’s exposé.

Did I mention that the Christian Action League was formerly headed up by former state legislator Coy Privette, a Cabarrus County commissioner and married retired Baptist minister, who was busted last July for aiding and abetting prostitution for his multiple no-tell motel liaisons with a sex worker? Coy pleaded guilty, acknowledging that he broke his religious marital vows over and over for a little horizontal bop on the meter (more posts here). The CAL’s current exec director, Rev. Mark H. Creech, has won kudos from the usual suspects on the bible-beating right, including Don Wildmon of the AFA and Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention.

And her hubby, James Forrester? Forrester’s husband is one of the sponsors of the marriage amendment that keeps coming up in our general assembly and it fortunately has died in committee each time.  The other state senator on the hate amendment bill, Fred Smith, is running for governor.

State Senators Jim Forrester and Fred Smith are on a mission to protect marriage in NC from the homos.

Senator Jim Forrester and I have introduced Senate Bill 13, which gives North Carolina voters the right to put marriage in a place where even an extremist judiciary can’t touch it - the North Carolina Constitution. The passage of a Marriage Protection Amendment would place traditional marriage in the strongest possible position. Voters who believe marriage is too important to become a political football tossed about by future legislatures deserve the opportunity to vote for a Constitutional Amendment that puts marriage in a “lockbox,” protected from activist judges and the General Assembly by a vote of the people.

Unfortunately the Senate’s Democratic leadership will not allow an up or down vote on the measure. They have sent our amendment to die in committee. That’s not how democracy should work. I understand that there is a debate within society about this issue, but there should be no debate about giving North Carolina voters the right to consider this issue. Every other southern state has had the chance to vote on a Marriage Protection Amendment. Why should the people of North Carolina be denied this opportunity?

Speaking of Kern…I’ve added a nifty little gif about her, along with quick links to keep this candid homobigotry — and the reaction to it — up front. Feel free to copy and distribute.

  1. Fuck this shit.

I’m just so sick of it.

GLBT marriage has no effect on my marriage. The only way it could destroy the current version of marriage is by exposing the lie of gendered roles.

    Who’s the wife????

Please tell me that the hatred is getting louder b/c they realize that their time is almost up.

Please don’t let their secondary America of home-schooled/brainwashed minions take over.

  2. You’re not really surprised, are you? Taking things out of context and presenting them as fact is on page 1 of the wingnut handbook.

  3. “Please tell me that the hatred is getting louder b/c they realize that their time is almost up.”

…or they feel they are very close to closing the deal on a whole raft of fundnut proposals.

I certainly hope they are on the way out, but…

“Please don’t let their secondary America of home-schooled/brainwashed minions take over.”

I think this is one of the most under-appreciated aspects of the Cheney/Bush administration - placing thousands of Stepford-ish christain fundnuts in critical places all over the government.

These people are like fundy sleeper cells, getting their instructions from Reichwing dog whistles and doing everything possible to undermine any progressive actions the government might attempt.

It’ll take decades to get rid of some of these True Believers…

  4. Peter, High Sea Lord of the Order of the Golden Rubber Duck

The thing that torques me the most is that these people get such a pass lying in public, and the media just reports it.

They do the “well, it is true that she SAID it” thing.

It should be axiomatic that if the only support that someone has for their position is demonstrable lies, they should get laughed off the public stage.

  5. Peter, High Sea Lord of the Order of the Golden Rubber Duck

“or they feel they are very close to closing the deal on a whole raft of fundnut proposals. ”

    Or both.

The thing that worries me the most is that they’ll get these Constitutional Amendments in place in time. The percentage of the population willing to get up off the couch to actively discriminate is plummeting. But the bar for repeal is far higher, and I still meet “gey friendly people” who subscribe to the “if you’ve never had the right, it isn’t really taking anything away from you not to give it to you” theory of privileged BS.

I fear that these things will go into the Constitution, and stick. That they’ll get patched here and there with Domestic Partnerships and Civil Unions and decriminalizations and unenforcements, but that it will then take generations to actually get around to repealing them - and it is the “or any other relationship approximating marriage” language that scares me the most.

  6. “It should be axiomatic that if the only support that someone has for their position is demonstrable lies, they should get laughed off the public stage.”

    If only…

The problem is when you try to confront crap like this, you’re fighting “truthiness”, not actual reality. It’s way too slippery to be pinned down by mere facts.

This is the overall problem with any belief system - which homobigotry is just another example of - believers are immune to anything that attacks their belief. In fact, their belief only gets stronger the more it is demonstrated as crap. This stays true right up until the point they drink the poisoned Koolaid.

How do you deal with something that hateful, that illogical, and yet so attractive to certain people?…that’s the question, isn’t it…

  7. this just makes me so ill.

we have had full marriage equality in canada for a few years now, and do you know what has changed about my hetero-marriage because of it? absolutely sweet-fuck-all.

dear maude, even my catholic parents support civil marriage for gays and lesbians.

  8. Mike Ess,

You’ve called it but the sleeper cells were actually placed during the Reagan Evilution. Many incompetents found shelter from the harshness of the free market in government employ.

  9. C’mon folks, we can’t judge these folks or their motives. After all, as we saw in the thread below, they just have a different Truth, equally valid as any other.

  10. As I’ve discovered by my historical researches, homophobia - and I *do* mean phobia, what else can you call it when McCarthy minions are fulminating about “how many thousands of perverts are working in Washington” and claiming that the USSR is actively trying to convert straight young American men to gayness so as to have a hold over them and thus destroy Civilization? - was always part of the conservative movement; but it did not in my recollection start to become Public Menace #1 until the end of the 1970s, after they had defeated the ERA and needed a new local Big Bad to get the followers worked up over. Most of these memes that Kern et all have been regurgitating have been around for a long, long time inside the conservative think-tank circles, but weren’t widely known outside, before.

  11. Cooper

Not to distract from the seriousness of this article, but Coy Privette? Really? The poor bastard seemed doomed to an embarrassing sex scandal from birth, with a name like that.

  12. for over 2000 years by the Western calendar, and over 5000 years by the Hebrew calendar.

So a Hebrew year is only 4 Western months or so now?

  13. Ms Kate

There are two types of people who are fascinated by where the gays are:

    self-hating homophobes
    gay people looking for others

Actually, one type (gay) two variations (admit it/don’t admit it).

Middle Schooler: “I smell a faggot”
#1 Son: Wow! That’s a highly evolved method of finding dates!

  14. I hear “Your sons shall become our minions and do our bidding” and immediately think of little robotic children bringing me lemonade.

    …am I evil??

  15. So a Hebrew year is only 4 Western months or so now? - Stentor

Woo Hoo! That means every other month it’s either Simchas Torah or Purim!

Funny, though, my Hebrew Bible must be deficient as in neither of the two versions of the Decalogue does it mention teh gay at all. There is something about observing the Shabbos, but I don’t think that closing everything down on Saturday has ever really been part of Western legal code.

Yeah, sure there were blue laws … but they got the frickin day wrong! And you are supposed to drink, have teh hawt sex and otherwise have a day of joy as well as of rest. But the blue laws were hardly about having a joyous day free from the distractions of work and all about sitting in church and having no fun at all.

  16. In what seems like another lifetime, a friend and I tried to track down the “Homosexual Agenda” and Mark Swift. Uh… maybe the last name is a clue: I’ve seen this surface under a few different first names, but it’s obviously a pseudonym, playing off Jonathan Swift, and his “Modest Proposal” — the grand-daddy of all bad-taste satires.

“Gay Community News” — if it every actually existed — was apparently a Boston low-budget “alternative paper” (back in the days before we could put out our alternative press as blogs) and probably never had a circulation beyond maybe a few hundred. I’ve never been able to track down an original, and no library seems to have back issues.

The “Gay Community News” — if it existed — was the “source” given by Strom Thurmond when he had this piece inserted in the Congressional Record. And the rest… as they say… is bullshit.

  17. GLBT marriage has no effect on my marriage. The only way it could destroy the current version of marriage is by exposing the lie of gendered roles. Who’s the wife????

Oh, I dunno. They introduced gay-marriage-in-all-but-name here and immediately people were busy fighting over who got to carry who over the threshhold. It was horrible, horrible I tell you.

Oh yeah, and then the country sank beneath the waves because of God’s Wrath, but that’s another story.

  18. Hey Pam — when is Forrester up for election? Can we recruit someone for his seat??

  19. Please don’t let their secondary America of home-schooled/brainwashed minions take over.

I knew a family from Oklahoma. They make Kern look rather tame.

The wife worked for Nichols I think. He’s supposed to be pretty out there on the right wing scale I guess.

I was just thinking of them today. Should have mentioned them earlier. They would definitely thrown their children into the grinder. The ‘republican grinder’, not that sissy ‘democrat grinder’.

  20. Bill S

“people were busy fighting over who got to carry who over the threshhold.”

I think a SCALE could solve that problem. :)

  21. Ms Kate

The only effect that “gay marriage” has had on my marriage is the constant arguing over what gift to give which couple in the frenzied year or so after May 17, and who would have to baby sit this time.

  22. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

God or gays, who cares? It doesn’t affect me at all. Why don’t these fuckers get a clue? I mean, there’s panty sniffers like Phil Kline and then there’s these scary little shits who really really really want to be in control of other peoples’ lives. Is it control freak issues mixed with homophobia or is control freakedness an integral part of homophobia? They treat women the same way, because they define women and gays as having the same fundamental sexuality–the ‘done to’, the sex class.
