People hear the same words and interpret them according to their own views.

Wingnuts hear “God damn America” and think it’s a call to violence and hate, because that’s what they know.

Empty suit politicians and their ilk hear “God damn America” and think it’s a political disaster because it doesn’t fit with the hollow patriotism that they express.

I hear “God damn America” and I hear a call to cut out the bullshit and fix the problem.

Words mean things? Only if the speaker and listener are using the same language.

What Rev. Wright meant when he said “God damn America” is something he would be best qualified to explain. (Though I’m fairly confident that he wasn’t speaking the language of the empty suit politicians that day.)

And the line about Hiroshima and apartheid? The reaction to that is nothing but the truth hurting.

Dumb people vote, too, and not just for the other guy. If anything, I’m guilty of cynicism toward the general populace — a group among whom “Muslim” can and has been successfully employed as a slur.

Sure, that’s true. Stuff like this could potentially have a large effect- I hope not, but it could. I guess all we can do really is watch how the Obama campaign reacts to these kinds of attacks. Personally, I think he should stop taking them as anything but nonsense, and publicly say how nonsensical they are, rather than continuing to jettison his associates to avoid scandal. That’s my take, you might have a different one.

It must be real hard to be a black man running for president. You know that many in the country are racist, and that the media is too, and it’s hard to know what the best response is. I wish he’d do more calling bullshit on it.
