Oh my, this just gets better and better:

Kern's son gay?

I find it hilarious that Salacious Sally is such a bigot. Her son Jesse was the biggest queen on the campus of OBU in the mid-90’s. Twice he almost was expelled for making inappropriate advances in the library toilets. When he wasn’t cruising the toilets he was in the glee club and a piano major…there’s your sign.

I'll ignore the slander that being in glee club and being a piano major = teh queer, but oh my! From a response:

I see in this foolish woman much anger and resentment. Her beliefs are challenged within herself, because if she stands by them then she must accept her part in her son being a homosexual. She isn’t strong enough to do that. Instead, she has created a paranoid delusion that there is some vast conspiracy of gays infiltrating schools and governments to turn others gay and force their lifestyles on everyone. Her subconscious has created this great gay evil so she doesn’t have to blame herself and she says her son as a victim.

Yikes.

We shouldn't tar the whole Oklahoma House with this; the news account excerpted said it was the Republican caucus that applauded her.

That said, if I was represented by a member of that caucus, I'd send her or him a letter with a copy of the news report and two questions:

1) Were you at this caucus meeting?
2) Did you applaud Rep. Kern?

The only way to begin to make any change is to lean on individual office holders. Either make them denounce Kern's comments (and publicize the denunciation), or make them embrace her views and publicly criticize them for doing so.

How screwed are LGBT Oklahomans likely to be in all this?
Very screwed indeed, though they may fail to notice from their vantage point of Denver, Dallas or even Memphis.

Thanks for keeping on top of this story, Pam.

I've signed the petition and sent a message to my governor.

David Ray, who served one term (by choice; he'd had enough of city politics) as my city councilmember in Norman, was the first openly gay man to win election to such a position in Oklahoma. I was very proud that he represented me.

It may be hard to see it in when crap like his happens, but Oklahoma is full of hardworking, rational, progressive people. We're definitely in the minority, but we are capable of pushing back. James Branum, whose website you credited with bringing this story to your attention, is one such person. Another is Laura Belmonte, a fine historians as well as an activist.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. OKC Mayor Mick Cornett, though a former sportscaster and a Republican, has a reputation for being fairly savvy and pragmatic (unlike his predecessor and partymate Kirk Humphreys). Given enough polite, well-applied pressure, the kind of politics represented by Sally Kerns might be relegated to the dustbin of history where it belongs. And that might happen sooner than you think.

I've updated the post to add more contacts -- information for members of the OK City Chamber of Commerce and the Convention & Visitors Bureau.

These entities have much at stake since this is Sally Kern's district. Are her views as a public official representative of the business climate that the city wishes to project? They should be on the record.

Give to the link in the post: victoryfund.org/listening. The only thing these neo-creeps understand is money. Give a LOT of money everytime a hater spews hate speech. That is the only way to change the discourse.
