One of the coffeehouse regulars, Fritz, spent a good deal of time on his response to the hate-filled homobigoted screed by Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern (sallykern@okhouse.gov, Capitol Office: 405-557-7348). She was secretly recorded in a meeting saying completely unhinged, ignorant, fact-free vitriol that ended up on YouTube. Among her more outrageous claims:
When she was taken to task by local media, tried desperately to say that some how she was taken out of context. This is a woman who sits on the Education Committee in the Oklahoma legislatureStudies show, no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted for more than, you know, a few decades. . .
…They are going after our young children, as young as two years of age, to try to teach them that the homosexual lifestyle is an acceptable lifestyle.
One of my colleagues said We don’t have a gay problem in our community…well you know what, that is so dumb. If you have cancer in your little toe, do you just say that I’m going to forget about it since the rest of you is fine? It spreads! This stuff is deadly and it is spreading. It will destroy our young people and it will destroy this nation.
Fritz’s response took the form of this hilarious parody:
My other post on this, with her video, is here.

A bit off-topic, but a nice bookend–>Denny Hastert, former House Majority Leader, retired from his seat early and tried to hand it off to Jim Oberweis, who has failed 4 times to gain state office. Oberweis hates immigrants and pushes for Illinois to pass a marriage is only “man+woman” law.
Hastert held his seat for over 20 years–>this district is perceived as a Republican strong-hold, which is why they handed it to Oberweis, they figured not enough people would turn out for the special election, and those that did would be majority Republican. Come the regular election next year, Oberweis would be the incumbent, and set for life to bigot away.
This morning, I awoke to a Bill Foster victory. He’s a neophyte Democrat who ran as a scientist with endorsements from Nobel Prize winners.
I’m sure the last minute Obama endorsement helped.
But Oberweis is defeated AGAIN! Think he’ll ever get the clue that Illinoisans really don’t like him and his bigotry? Even outside Chicago, Illinois Republicans care about things other than ‘defending marriage’.
OK, back to the currently in-office homobigot.
Thanks, Fritz. As a gay Oklahoman teacher (not that I can ever tell my colleagues), this whole thing is just… I mean, I knew the sentiment was there. But it’s one thing to know and another to hear it flat-out. The levity is nice break.
Gay bashers love to use Rome as an example, and they tell us how homosexuality lead to its destruction. But Rome lasted for hundreds of years with the gay, it only fell after it adopted christianity as its state religion.
Excellent! That’s the way to counter that argument: “Once Rome adopted Christianity it fell within” (what period of time??) “four centuries!!!”
So, America only has less than 2 centuries to rid itself of the scourge of Christianity.
My faveourite part of the comments on the local news peice on that bigot is the commenter claiming that everyone who disagreed with her was “anti-xtian” and they were therfore unable to listen to reason.
Oh the hilarity!
“It’s OK when I discriminate against YOU but when you turn it around on ME that’s when it’s true bigotry! Xtians are really the ones being discriminated against! Look at all these anti-xtian laws being passed!”
LOL
Caren, my favorite part of that whole election was the Chicago Tribune’s endorsement of Foster. They basically said, We agree with Oberweis’s positions, but we’re endorsing his opponent because he’s such an asshole.
Oberweis was quoted as saying he’ll be a candidate in the November election. The SOB just never learns, does he?
Oberweis runs again?
Anything that drains the coffers (”Destroy, degrade, deny”, this is part of the ‘degrade’ path) of Republican millionaires to zero net advantage is Fine By Me.
Stunning what passes for educators in the US.
Eric- Rome fell in large part due to the schism within the church after the death of Theodosius, although that was around 400 CE, the empire only adopted christianity about 100 years earlier.
Take your sarcasm and shove it up your ass.
Well, shit Pablo, we have even LESS time!

Doesn’t that still mean Christianity can still be to blame for the fall of Rome? Had there been no church to have no schism there would have been no fall. And how long had Rome been powerful BEFORE Christianity came around? One hundred years is still ten decades (hence, “a few decades”)and that’s all Rome lasted once it came under Christian rule, supposedly.
If the weather wasn’t so cold up there, I would move to Canada. I’m just glad I live in NY.

yes, it does. but ERIC was saying “no, HOMOS killed rome, Christianity had nothing to do with it” based, presumably, on the fact that rome fell roughly 400 years after the invention of christianity.
Which, while true, has nothing to do with when rome accepted it.
The homobigots have a handy murky language thing in this case, too, as they said that the cultures collapsed after “totally” accepting gays. so if a gay-accepting culture didn’t fall until centuries later, it doesn’t matter, because it didn’t TOTALLY accept gays until just before the collapse, so homosex is proven evil based on empty words that don’t need facts to back them up.
Christianity has a direct causal relationship with the fall of Rome. anyone who says otherwise never studied ancient history. Not that it matters, because all civilizations fall. it’s what they do. they rise, florish, decay and fall. There has never, and will never, be a civilization that does not follow that pattern. America will fall. It is as inevitable as various principalities setting up in different regions of North America following, only to in turn fall themselves because Guin Lineford, Prince of Bostonia, is a double crossing asshole.
Pablo took the words right out of my mouth. However, while blaming Christianity for Rome’s fall makes for a fun riposte to an idiot who would blame gayness, it’s oversimplifying to the point of glibness. Significantly, they had a military unsuited for imperial responsibilities, and a self-centered arrogance that precluded them from seeing themselves as others saw them.

@tom,
you live in NY? you do realize that you’re not very far from canada, dont you? smarten up noob! go back under the bridge, we have the same weather.
There’s a newspaper message board up in PA that supports this type of hate speech. Be careful, anyone who defends gays gets banned from the site.

“Studies show, no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted for more than, you know, a few decades. . .”
what studies? by who? done when? and what societies?
“…They are going after our young children, as young as two years of age, to try to teach them that the homosexual lifestyle is an acceptable lifestyle”
being a homosexual is acceptable and it’s not a lifestyle. And technically straight people are “going after” children as well. It’s just that being straight is apparently better.

Hate is deadly. Hate is spreading. Hate destroys people. thats the only thing thats happening here.
