Earlier this week in my review of In The Devil’s Snare, I promised more analysis of the way gender factors in the sort of magical thinking panics like witch scares. And here it is—how the anti-choice movement resembles the Salem witch trials, especially with the use of female leadership to give cover to the patriarchy. Enjoy, and if you’ve got Digg, do you mind giving it a bump?

A blogger calling themself “The Field Negro” put this better, but I’ll try. The girls are trying to fulfill their personal needs as well as the group needs. It’s also about status.
Many NYT and WaPo writers move to the hinterlands. They always mention the cheap housing, the dearth of culture, and how successful they are now. In the evilbig city, they were invisible, now in the pure and unblackened lands they can assert their rightful place as lordlings. Teeny fish in very small pond.
Don’t be silly. Not only are anti-choicers often sexist, they can also be rabid racists:

I checked out that thread at Jill’s–depressing. At least there seemed to be one pro-lifer upset about the racist comment. Everyone else blew it off: “but LIBERALS KILL BLACK BABIES!!!”
I am so not looking forward to the racism and/or misogyny the republican machine will pollute our country with after our candidate is decided. If we’re getting small taste now, Lord help us this fall.
