I saw a replay of winger talk radio host Bill Cunningham’s unhinged warm-up last night at a McCain rally, and I think the Rush-wannabe has a few screws loose.
John McCain quickly came out and repudiated the right-winger’s tirade, saying “I absolutely repudiate such comments, and again I will take responsibility — it will never happen again. It will never happen again“.Earlier Tuesday, Cunningham spoke at a McCain campaign event in Cincinnati and called Obama a “hack, Chicago-style Daley politician.”
“All is going to be right with the world when the great prophet from Chicago takes the stand, and the world leaders who want to kill us will simply be singing ‘Kumbaya’ around the table of Barack Obama,” the commentator told the crowd.
Cunningham, known for his flame-throwing style, repeatedly used Obama’s middle name — Hussein — during his remarks, made as a warm-up for the audience waiting to hear McCain speak.
Cunningham was incensed, and went on Hannity, where he referred to Barack Obama as a “Manchurian candidate,” with Sean Hannity smiling. That sent him onto the airwaves to declare that “John McCain threw me under a bus — under the ‘Straight Talk Express.’” He also said that he’s so pissed he’s throwing his support to Hillary.
Needless to say, the rest of far-right fringe is backing Cunningham, including old Hillbilly Heroin himself, Rushbo (Think Progress has video). Interestingly, Freepi went apesh*t over McCain AND blasted Cunningham for making conservatives look bad. Now that takes something. See it below the fold.
McCain insists on blowing this. If he blows this any harder he should be below Bill Clinton on his knees doing the obvious so he is set for his fast approaching retirement.
I’m offended by McCain’s remarks. Then again, I was never a fan.
McCain’s “Straight Talk Express” just got PWND.
I saw the Cunningham re-runs. Crass and classless to say the least. One expects that kind of behavior from Code Pink.
McCain is just not an attractive candidate, in fact I find him pretty repulsive. He never misses an opportunity to stab a conservative, never. There has to be a lesson here somewhere, but God help me if I can find it.
McCain has little chance of attracting conservatives, now add kiss ass to his resume and that surely will help.
To demostrate to obama about how sorry he is, he should fire campaign staff involved with bringing this loudmouth to the event./s/
McCain’s strategy of defending Democrats while throwing his Conservative supporters, particularly those in talk radio with millions of listeners, under the bus is surely a winner for November. (More sarcasm for today)
Don’t worry about McCain and his approaching retirement. Besides what he’s ripped the taxpayers and lobbyists off for over the years, he’s going to be well paid for his 2nd place finish in Nov. Half of it is probably in some overseas bank already, in euros, of course.
Exactly…have some dignity and civility…and don’t give me this line that “I’m just using his middle name.” The point is that you are using it to imply that Obama is a muslim and that his loyalty should be questioned, just as Hillary used the photo to imply the same thing. I think there is plenty to attack Obama on, without sinking to this crap.
I’m no McCain fan but I agree with him for once. I have seen this jerk on TV saying Hussein Obama in every sentence. It’s childish. I’m sure Obama doesn’t care and his voters don’t care. It’s annoying and childish to keep repeating that.
I don’t know how you have both straight talk and policed talk. John McCain is the speech police. But who polices him when he opens his gutter mouth and calls fellow republicans a-holes or says f-you to them (and he uses the full term which I would never use).
I saw Cunningham last night on Hannity & Colmes, he’s a blowhard egotistic nutburger, IMO.
I think McCain was right to distance himself from what the radio guy said. At the moment, Barack is the teflon guy, something the clintons are finding out the hard way, it would be wise for McCain to realize that he treads a fine line when it comes to attacks against Barack. Stick to the issues, don’t make it personal. I don’t think it’s wise to try to play up a muslim angle, it will only make republicans appear anti muslim, and it could backfire big time. And let’s not fool ourselves as to why the guy kept saying Obama’s middle name.
It’s his Sista Souljah moment. Clinton faked a repudiation of leftist blacks so he could look good to moderate whites. McCain is showing that he thinks of conservatives as kooks, and is trying to appeal to the mushy middle and dems. In that balancing act, he will fail miserably. I predict a landslide.
This is just one more reason why I can not support McCain. Putting on my tin foil cap I am thinking Cunningham was set up. McCain knew who Cunningham was and he knew what he would say. What I don’t understand is why McCain did it.
John McCain’s campaign = Bob Dole II “Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory,” eh John?
Way to “fire up the base,” Mr. McAmnesty. We now know to never get between McInsane and his beloved Dhimmicrats.
***
When his little puppet Lindsey Graham called all those opposed to ILLEGAL aliens “racists” and “bigots”, John McCain was silent.
When Senate buddy John Kerry called all National Guardsmen cowards and draft-dodgers, John McCain was silent.
When Teddy Kennedy savaged Robert Bork, John McCain was silent.
When Chuckie Hagel slandered President Bush, John McCain was silent.
Day by day John McCain shows his hatred and contempt for conservatives, and his higher love and respect for the hate-America, welfare-state liberals of the Democrat party who share membership in his Senate club.
When election day comes and it is my turn to voice my choice, I too will be silent.

I kinda like the phrase nutburger. Makes me think of little freeze-dried patties of wingnuts, all stacked together and ready for the Wendy’s assembly line. Which is kind of how they choose to live their lives.
Every time from now on that McCain or his surrogates let off another racist or sexist slur, the campaign will be able to play that tape of McCain chastising Cunningham.
If McCain threw Cunninham under the bus….why is he stopping?
Calling him a “Chicago-style Daley politician” is fair enough. Debatable, but not a personal slam.
Pretending that he’s some kind of scary scary Manchurian candidate who will force us all to convert to Islam and live under sharia law because his middle name is Hussein? Not so much.
Although Digby had an interesting take on this:
“Pretending that he’s some kind of scary scary Manchurian candidate who will force us all to convert to Islam and live under sharia law because his middle name is Hussein? Not so much.”
What gets me is that it’s Still Only February! We have a long way to go, and it’s gonna be covered in slime the whole way.
I’m waiting to be informed that Obama caused 9/11, both of the Space Shuttle disasters, was involved in the assassination’s of RFK, MLK, and JFK (the last as a 2-year old), leaked atomic secrets to the Russians, gave intelligence to the Japanese before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Great Depression and the Stock Market Crash, etc.
How he had time to bed that bevy of starlets, influential socialites, and mob-boss mistresses we’ll never know…
And we’re going to throw him right back. We’re needy, not desparate.
The guy who called this McCain’s “Sister Souljah moment” may have been on to something. Moving away from the gasbag right may be a very smart move for McCain. I only hope the guy’s right in saying this move will fail…
Is it worth pointing out how this McCain response differs from how he reacted to “How do we beat the bitch?”
As I understand it, he did not “quickly” come out to denounce the comments. He did it after the rally, to the press, after the crowd had left. The reporting on the sequence of events must be coming straight from his campaign.

Oh dear. Please don’t make me laugh that hard when I’m trying to get the baby to sleep. Seriously, Blue Jean, I think I love you for that comment.
I’m so happy that I don’t have cable right now. I watch Simpsons DVDs instead of the Sunday morning talking-heads shows. Oy, now I’m going to have to get rid of the internet.
The state of our public discourse is just so fucking stupid. Just listen to his repetition of Barak Hussein Obama.
And any time Chris Matthews is on my own I.Q. drops. It falls further if Fox News happens to be on.
I used to sort of (!) enjoy policy and political talk. It’s just so ridiculously stupid that I can’t take it any more.
As I’ve previously stated, this guy is right on, which is all the more reason why we of The Left (i.e. me) need to get behind our new Islamic messiah. As the unnamed colonel in Full Metal Jacket said:
“Son, all I’ve ever asked of
my marineslefties everywhere is that they obey my orders as they would the word ofGodAllah. We are here to helpthe VietnameseAmerica, because inside everygookAmerican there isan Americana radical jihadist trying to get out. It’s a hardball world, son. We’ve gotta keep our heads until thispeaceneo-con craze blows over.”This guy said what he has been saying all along. McCain had to know what he was going to say so for him to be shocked is a joke.
I, too, fear the months to come. We’ve barely even gotten started, and already it’s stupid as hell. By November, Matthews & Russert will be rocking back and forth in front of the cameras with white rags on their heads, shouting,
“Hello, Mr. Gumby!”
“Helloo!!”
“MY BRAIN HURTS!!”
“OOooo!!”"
Oh, he was on NPR this afternoon, lying through his teeth to Robert Siegel. It was priceless listening to Siegel trying not to either laugh or yell at him the whole time the guy was making shit up wholesale, but still skewering mercilessly.
I just don’t buy this Manchurian Candidate nonsense. I mean I really do believe in an international conspiracy to impose sharia law on the world. I got my spider sense going off all the time about this. Yet I still voted for Obama.
Bacopa;
That’s cuz of Obama’s extriacular abilities, man! The Chinese gave it to him! I read all about in the Enquirer, man!
Av0gadro,
Thanks!
You’re making me blush. I’m glad to give you a laugh, but I hope I didn’t cost the baby too much sleep.
I’m surprised that I haven’t seen anybody compare “Barack HUSSEIN Obama” with Mussolini’s favorite line “Franklin DELANO Roosevelt”.
Those right-wing assholes know a winning strategy when they hear it.
Oh, wait, Mussolini didn’t actually win, did he?
I mean I really do believe in an international conspiracy to impose sharia law on the world.
It’s undoubtedly true that Al-Qeda members do actually have such a conspiracy. I just don’t know why I should take this conspiracy any more seriously than the Radical Christianists’ conspiracy to create a Theocratic America, the Minutemen’s conspiracy to throw all the Mexican-Americans into concentration camps, or the New Black Panther Party’s conspiracy to start a black revolution.
Certainly I take this much less seriously than the Neoconservatives’ so far successful strategy to turn the USA into a new Roman Empire, and be the closest advisors to the new Ceasar.
Cunningham is just another know-nothing, loudmouth denizen of the AM band enjoying his 15 minutes of fame. Seriously, is it a requirement that all these shitheads exhibit the same dime store characteristics of sweat-stained polyester drenched in Aqua-Velva and testosterone?

Yeah. WWF wrestling is more entertaining, more intelligent, and takes a lot more talent.
“Oh, wait, Mussolini didn’t actually win, did he?”
Sure he did. He won himself an all-expenses-paid one-way trip to hell. Alongside Hitler, Stalin, Mao, etc.
And they’ll soon be joined by most of the current crop of Reichwing assholes - including McCain. Nixon’s been keeping the place nice and toasty for their arrival.
Of course, Cheney is special. The Devil always said that Dick Cheney is “the one soul I would come up here to collect myself”…
That’s right, I remember when Satan said that. Actually, I was rappin’ at him the other say and he was talking about this new circle of Hell he was preparing for dishonest political pundits. He was pretty into it, had a pool of sharks with lasers on their heads, he was doing psychological research into the deep childhood terrors and disappointments of pundits.
I think Satan is getting a little bored with the whole family business, by the way. He was saying he wanted to retire, maybe to Phoenix, Arizona. He likes the heat. He was saying he’d like to let Beezlebub run things for a couple of aeons.
OK, I’m sorry but we need to stop gasping and clutching our pearls just because wingnuts are using Barack Obama’s middle name. It’s his actual middle name, it’s not like they’re calling him “Barack Hussein Obama” when his middle name is Stanley or something. We shouldn’t be ashamed or afraid that a future president of the US has a “muslim-sounding” middle name — we should celebrate it and throw it back in the faces of the racist dicks who think that it’s some sort of gotcha trump card.
Call out the Kumbaya snark (oooh! He’s African!) for what it is, and point out that the “prophet” from Illinois isn’t invoking God any more or less than your typical repub candidate, and let them tease him about his actual name like the 3rd grade minds they are.
Watching the liberal pundits get worked into a froth because some cobag uses a candidate’s middle name (when we use the full name of the other candidates all the time as well) leaves a bad taste in our mouth because then we look like third-graders too–getting upset when someone teases us for something that we shouldn’t be ashamed of.
I dunno Mighty Ponygirl- I agree that it is, in fact, his middle name, but you should not forget that millions of Americans are insanely afraid of Muslims right now. That’s why asshole pundits keep using that name.
“The truth, told with ill-intent/ beats any lie you can invent. -Oscar Wilde”
Maybe if the rest of us started using it, it wouldn’t just be the asshole pundits using it, and we’d stop intimating that we’re ashamed of it or that it’s some sort of secret that needs to be guarded.
Maybe, Mighty P. Maybe we should try it.
Yeah, kill two birds with one stone. Frankly, the anti-Muslim prejudice going on now just disgusts me. Fight that and you’ll end this ridiculous crap right now.
I mean, if “Islamofascists” were such a danger how come there aren’t IEDs on American highways right now?
/rant
I hate it that people are falling for the ‘Hussein’ thing. It’s like an instant IQ test.
I think Satan is getting a little bored with the whole family business, by the way. He was saying he wanted to retire, maybe to Phoenix, Arizona.
Last I heard, he was living in Perth, Australia.
*giggle*. Out of curiosity, I looked up the meaning of the name “Hussein”. It means “good looking”, or “handsome small one” or “beautiful boy”.
So this moron is stressing that he thinks Barack is handsome! Oooooh. That will be bad for a presidential candidate, to have the opposition repeating frequently how goodlooking he is!
Yeah, kill two birds with one stone. Frankly, the anti-Muslim prejudice going on now just disgusts me. Fight that and you’ll end this ridiculous crap right now.
I wouldn’t bet on anything we could say right now having too much of an effect on people, though. Lots of Americans will probably hate Muslims until they (the Americans, that is) die. It would be better if there were a significant portion of the mass media which would refuse to air people who encourage racism.
Maybe if the rest of us started using it, it wouldn’t just be the asshole pundits using it, and we’d stop intimating that we’re ashamed of it or that it’s some sort of secret that needs to be guarded.
Also, we should try to use “John Stanley McCain III” whenever possible. Doesn’t sound like a “straight-talker” name to me . . .
Athiest, I don’t care. It’s worth fighting. Voila.
” WASHINGTON (AFP) - A huge survey of the world’s Muslims released Tuesday challenges Western notions that equate Islam with radicalism and violence.
The survey, conducted by the Gallup polling agency over six years and three continents, seeks to dispel the belief held by some in the West that Islam itself is the driving force of radicalism.
It shows that the overwhelming majority of Muslims condemned the attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001 and other subsequent terrorist attacks, the authors of the study said in Washington.
“Samuel Harris said in the Washington Times (in 2004): ‘It is time we admitted that we are not at war with terrorism. We are at war with Islam’,” Dalia Mogadeh, co-author of the book “Who Speaks for Islam” which grew out of the study, told a news conference here.
“The argument Mr Harris makes is that religion in the primary driver” of radicalism and violence, she said.
“Religion is an important part of life for the overwhelming majority of Muslims, and if it were indeed the driver for radicalisation, this would be a serious issue.”
But the study, which Gallup says surveyed a sample equivalent to 90 percent of the world’s Muslims, showed that widespread religiosity “does not translate into widespread support for terrorism,” said Mogadeh, director of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies.
About 93 percent of the world’s 1.3 billion Muslims are moderates and only seven percent are politically radical, according to the poll, based on more than 50,000 interviews.
In majority Muslim countries, overwhelming majorities said religion was a very important part of their lives — 99 percent in Indonesia, 98 percent in Egypt, 95 percent in Pakistan.
But only seven percent of the billion Muslims surveyed — the radicals — condoned the attacks on the United States in 2001, the poll showed.”
This is injustice, pure and simple. People who stereotype Muslims deserve to pay for it.
I live in the same neigborhood as this scumbag in Cincinnati. Believe it or not friends, this guy is reveared by many a conservative in this Republican city; if you ever wonder why Cincy is one of the Repub strongholds in the country, it is the reason this guy even has a job.
This is the man, who along with meanJean Schmidt, spent their own private money to put a banner up in the middle of my small local berg that said, “Marry Christmas”, just so they could perpetuate the war on christmas myth, while at the same time on his radio show, tell a jewish listener to go “cry to someone that gives a damn” about her being chastised for not wishing him a merry christmas instead saying “happy holidays” when they crossed paths at my local Krogers. He actually talked about her by name on air, and when she called in he was a total prick. Now that is someone to look up to.
I won’t even go into the “darky” comments I’ve heard this idiot talk about.
I need to say this since no one else has pointed it out yet: It is not, in fact, “fair” to call Obama a “Chicago-style Daley politician.” Yes, the man lives in Chicago. But his political success has come in spite of Chicago’s machine politics, not because of them. When he ran for the Senate in 2004, he was not the candidate backed by the Daley administration. He won the primary (by a huge margin, incidentally) despite the Chicago Democratic establishment’s best efforts to elect somebody else. Anyone who investigated Chicago Machine politics on even a cursory level (and I’m certainly no expert) would find the statement ridiculous.
Obviously it’s because GEORGE W. BUSH HAS KEPT US SAFE FOR THE LAST SEVEN YEARS!!! SAY IT, YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE!!!/wingnut
i need to go bleach my brain now.
Athiest, I don’t care. It’s worth fighting. Voila.
Sure, I could not agree more. I just wanted to say that if you expect to: “end this ridiculous crap right now.“, you should stop expecting it. The ridiculous crap has legs, ginmar.
Watching this guy makes you realize just how much finesse and sophistry Hannity and Limbaugh have. What they do is a kind of artistry.. this fellow is just awful. No talent.
All he did was spit out soundbites, without any coherency.
:p
