Chris:
This may be a wise way to frame the debate, or not. But the linked article, along with the other posts here so far, show that a solid chunk of democrats don’t care a whiff about the “rare” part of “safe, legal, and rare.”

As evidenced by the traditional support they give planned parenthood, prenatal/postnatal health issues, health education....

Nadav:

But aren’t they tactics she suggests worthwhile even if they’re able to persuade 10% of the evangelical vote?

Not at the cost of 10-15% of the liberal vote. Democratic politicians understand that the true liberals will always vote for them, b/c where else will we go. But they can't count on that holding true for them forever. I know that if the Dems become the New Theocracy Party, I will take my ball and go home, and I know I'm not the only one. The oppurtunity to vote for either a woman or a black man has been the only thing keeping me from leaving now, since obviously they still haven't learned to play to their base, instead of the Republican base.

"Hi pot! Meet kettle!"

Hey, did you get that one from grade school?...

E The "Wise" - ha, ha, ha! Love that name! Continuing in a long line of Reichwing examples of using newspeak to say one thing but mean the exact opposite.

Dude! I went over to your site and, after the nausea died down a little, I saw a loving tribute there to William F. Buckley, Jr.

Would that be the very same William F. Buckley, Jr. whose <strike>magazine</strike> fascist rag spent the '50's and '60's decrying civil rights, wondering why Dr. Martin Luther King was so "uppity", as well as a whole host of other racist, sexist, and otherwise bigoted stands on just about every major issue, political as well as social, for the last 50-years? Do you mean THAT William F. Buckley, Jr.?

As Bill Engvall would say, "Here's your sign..."

I wondered why this thread blew up, and realized we picked up wtf from LGM. Sorry, y’all. There’s nothing worse than a humorless anti-feminist asswipe. I don’t know why anti-feminists have such terrible senses of humor and have to be so touchy all the time. - Amanda Marcotte

This coming from the most humorless asswipe I have ever read on a left or right blog. Hi pot! Meet kettle!

Thanks for your response, Amanda. I'd be interested in seeing evidence for whether or not evangelicals are responding favorably to liberal candidates who use more "God-friendly" language. The two examples Sullivan used in the interview seemed to support her argument, and my impression is that many evangelicals like Obama because of his comfort in talking about religion and in presenting his policies in terms of values. But I don't know enough about electoral politics all over the country to be able to say definitively whether Sullivan's prescriptions are working or not, so I'm eager to hear what you're basing your claim on.

I'm sure it's likely that Sullivan is being overly optimistic in her projections of 40% of evangelicals and future electoral dominance (if that is, in fact, what she says in her book). But aren't they tactics she suggests worthwhile even if they're able to persuade 10% of the evangelical vote?

Another illusion that WTF is trying to generate is that I'm being mean to Amy Sullivan, who I should apparently never criticize because, um, she's a woman and I'm a feminist and feminists believe that women are unequal and therefore shouldn't....

Shit. I guess WTF's criticisms of me are because I don't live up to an image of feminists he created so he could hate on us. Same situation as the god-botherers who whine that liberals have to give up human rights in order to "tolerate" religious fundamentalists.

I'm not being dismissive of Amy, for what it's worth. I think, unlike anti-choice leadership, she's kind but just mistaken. I still think her discomfort with abortion stems from a larger religion-induced discomfort with female sexuality. But I'm not going to dismiss her the way I do female leadership in the anti-choice movement. I think she's very sincerely spiritual and that's led her to put on blinders about the people around her when she has spiritual moments, blinders that disallow her to see that their desire to oppress is pretty damn cruel.

To echo what Michael said, it's worth noting that WTF posts here under a variety of names to create the illusion of an crowds of ranters against me. Considering that he himself is willing to use tactics that create the illusion of one thing to accomplish another thing, then he has evidence right at home that people are capable of this.

Considering that his argument that he's running with is that it's incorrect to ever judge a person by his actions, and that his words should always be taken at face value, I think his use of different names calls this assertion into question.

Should we believe his actions? Or should we take him at his word that he is a bunch of different people living in one body?

It's infuriating because bullheaded unwillingness to face up to the facts is infuriating. Especially since part of the reason that she won't accept certain things are true because it undermines her book's thesis. She argues that if only Democrats said they were Christians and admitted that abortion is uncomfortable for some, all of a sudden we'd get 40% of the evangelicals and never lose another election.

Find me, for instance, the atheist Democratic candidate that says, "I love abortion and think it should be women's major form of birth control." Find him or her. Please.

See, she's infuriating because she's full of shit. Her prescriptions are already being followed and the results are not happening. She is resisting all evidence. She doesn't want to admit that the people she thinks are on the verge of being Democrats are probably just saying that to make themselves feel better. To get them, we'd have to compromise basic values, like the belief that women are citizens.

"However, I do think it’s fairly obvious you’re the type of person who simply refuses to listen to someone else, especially when they try to explain something, and that’s either the cause or the result of you being massively and most likely willfully obtuse. In short, you’re just gonna parse and bitch and snip and continue to be a minor irritant."

Matt, I think the phrase you're looking for is "troll". Our friend wtf seems to be a perfect specimen of that species...

wtf,
Tell ya what Matt, since you’re so much smarter than I. Why don’t you explain the Michael Moore bit, and discuss it’s relevance to anything I have posted here.

Why bother trying? Smarter people than me have tried and it sails right pastya. So waste my time and yours?

And it's not because I don't think you're smart enough to get it, because you might be. However, I do think it's fairly obvious you're the type of person who simply refuses to listen to someone else, especially when they try to explain something, and that's either the cause or the result of you being massively and most likely willfully obtuse. However, I don't know if you're being so obtuse because all the concepts are too much for your little world or if you're just an asshole in general. Could be both. You come across as the guy who makes a huge deal about not tipping because you didn't get "exceptional service, not just regular service", especially when you're part of a large group or on a date, but I'm just judging by what I've read. In any event, I hope you're able to get some enjoyment your day. Maybe if you keep a good attitutde, the feminists hiding under your bed won't jump on you.

Ya silly bastard.
