  10. “Slave of Desire”—The New Dawn

I was listening to a podcast review of “Persepolis” the other day (which made me realize I need to see it, which I’ll be doing this weekend), honor of the movie, they were listing some of their favorite “coming of age” movies. I thought it was an intriguing topic, so I thought I’d list a few and open the floor: What’s your list of favorite “coming of age” movies?

  • Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Call it the anti-John Hughes.
  • Hairspray. The original John Waters movie. Not the recent remake, which I finally watched and which made me want to cry, it was so bad.
  • The Tin Drum. A movie about a young boy who magically refuses to age, and comes of age anyway. Oh, and there’s Nazis.
  • Rushmore. It’s amazing how many people relate to a fundamentally weird kid.
  • Ghost World. The thing with the older man was something I couldn’t relate to, but the friendship between the girls hit close to home. Different and not from the book. I’m not going to judge which one is definitively better. They both have their strong points.

Sleater-Kinney. This video rocks, seriously:

Dressy Bessy—is my age showing yet?:

No new cat pictures. However, I highly recommend this set of pictures of cats playing, via Lauren.

Persepolis is amazing (in book or movie form). It’s incredible that such seemingly simple illustration can be transformed into such innovative animation. I suppose it’s a coming-of-age story, but as a narrative structure I don’t usually find those so interesting. This was super interesting.

    Other good (quasi-)coming-of-age movies:

    * Desperate Teenage Lovedolls (”Hey, thanks for killing my mom.” “No problem.”)

    * The Wizard of Oz

    * Quadrophenia (Sort of plotless, but borderline compelling)

  4. deep6

St. Elmo’s Fire. Something about Andrew McCarthy in that movie just does it for me. And usually I don’t like Andrew McCarthy. Anything with Molly Ringwald in it works too, like The Breakfast Club or Pretty in Pink or Sixteen Candles.

I’d also argue Adventures in Babysitting is an arguable coming of age romp. Not one of my favorites but compulsively watchable, like Clue, which is definitely NOT a coming of age romp, but better than Murder by Death.

I’m disappointed by present-day teen flicks. They’re just too J. Crew for me. The angst is too manufactured, the kids too good looking…. Not gritty, or raw or honest, which I think more of the 80s flicks were. Rushmore would be an exception to that, as would Napoleon Dynamite.

  5. “The Wonder Years” was like one long coming-of-age movie. It teaches you valuable lessons, like using your cuteness while you’re young, because you might grow up ugly. And that you should grab the smart chickie while you can, because she might grow up to be a frikkin’ particle physicist or something.

  10. Keith

Best coming of age movie (or my favorite , anyway):

    Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

There’s an element of wish fulfillment in the film, sure but there is, under it all, a profound sadness that childhood has ended for these three people who are unprepared for life as an adult.

Ferris might be able to pull of these pranks in high school but he knows that he’s going to have a hard time carrying that magic into the real world. This came through in the scene when they try to get into the fancy restaurant under an assumed name and are almost found out. That’s when it becomes aparent that there will be so much work invovled in simply creating one moment of joy that it may not be worth it and Ferris may not be able to pull his friends along with him any longer.

Cameron already knows he’s doomed to mediocrity and failure because he’s had it hammered into him since he was little. He comes to embrace it but not without regret that he can’t be as joyous about life as Ferris, not even for a moment.

Sloane realizes that as wonderful as she feels around Ferris, it is only fleeting and soon to end. They have to grow up and she begins to wonder if he’s really the sort of man who could be a stable part of her life as an adult.

And Rooney of course is envious of al of them, even Cameron, because he will never have that level of freedom ever again and may not even have had it when he was their age.

  11. Come to think of it, the biggest coming-of-age anything in my childhood was Degrassi. I even bought a Joey Jeremiah hat. Haven’t seen the new ones, but I like that they brough Caitlin back.

Although maybe it’s like Mallrats and I just had a thing for girls who say “aboot.”

  12. Dr. Locrian

    1. Rusted — Katatonia
    2. The Keep — Solstice
    3. National Enhancer (Merzbow mix) — Thurston Moore
    4. Go Back to France — Harvey Milk
    5. Aubade — Snowblood
    6. To Forgive — Smashing Pumpkins
    7. Heartworm — Cadaver
    8. Parabole — Traum Von Gott
    9. Twilight Sentinel — Zombi
    10. Jimmy — The Young Gods

Hmmm . . . coming of age movies.

Movies That Meant Most to Me When I was the Target Age for Coming of Age Movies:

    Breakfast Club
    Karate Kid
    Better Off Dead
    Lucas

    Early Adulthood (College, 20’s)

    Fast Times at Ridgemont High
    Dazed and Confused
    Say Anything
    Valley Girl

    Early Middle Age:

    High Fidelity
    Say Anything
    Dazed and Confused
    Better Off Dead
    Fast Times at Ridgemont High
    Ginger Snaps

And they’re not movies, but the more I thought about it, the more it becomes clear that I relate to these shows the most of all:

    Buffy
    Freaks & Geeks
    My So-Called Life
    Veronica Mars

  13. I think The Sure Thing still holds up. It’s a road trip, a romance, and a coming-of-age story all rolled into one!

Plus it’s funny to see Anthony Edwards as a shallow fraternity boy and Tim Robbins as an uptight graduate student.

  14. Dr. Locrian

Forgot to add to my list of movies that meant a lot to me as a tween/teen:

Meatballs: Jeez, I must have seen that a million times on HBO.

Beastmaster: Hello, what says coming of age more than learning to use your powers of animal empathy to get a ferret to bite a barbarian’s balls?! Blame HBO for that one too.

  15. the real sheila

Favorite coming of age movie: Gas Food Lodging

  16. Eliani

    New poster here :)

    Coming of age movies:

    Fast Times at Ridgemont High
    Heathers
The Lost Boys (maybe a stretch)

    Random 10
    Carnival - Keeva
Jesus, Children of America - Stevie Wonder
    Morning Star - Alpha Children
    Kashmir - Led Zepplin
    O Fortuna - Karl Orf
Bonita Applebaum - Tribe Called Quest

Dear Prudence - Siouxie and the Banshees
Wo Willst Du Hin - Xavier Naidoo
    U.N.I.T.Y. - Queen Latifah

  17. haydn60

I haven’t seen Persepolis yet but I’m reading the book & it’s hard to stop. There’s a sort-of coming-of-age subplot to “Happiness” which is pretty funny/wrenching among all the f*cked up adulthood on display. The movie I saw of “Huckleberry Finn” was pretty bland next to the book. Geez, I dunno. “Old Yeller”?

My most eclectic FRT yet, though it does begin & end on the piano:

BARTÓK: 10 Easy Pieces, Nº 3 - Slovak young me - Chris Breemer
In the Pines - The Crumb Family
Poodles As Usual - Herb & Elena Ayers
    Jerkin’ Back ‘N Forth - Dev2.0
The Ballad Of Jim And Tammy - Tammy Faye Bakker
Either Open Or Unsound - Nurse With Wound
Saccharine & the War [demo] - Halfnelson
Metropolis Suite Part 1 [fragment] - Brian Bennett
Interzone [Effenaar, Eindhoven, 1/18/80] - Joy Division
Everything Happens to Me [Take 3] - Thelonious Monk

  18. haydn60

    rea:

    “George”—Patrick Fitzgerald

Are the lyrics abobut prosecuting the president?

It’s about torturing a confession from someone, so it is pretty apt.

  19. 1) Gronlandic Edit - Of Montreal.
    2) Newme - Jamie Lidell.
    3) Born in the U.S.A. - Bruce Springsteen.

    10) I Wanna Grow up to Be a Politician - The Byrds. Timing - perfect!

  20. Oh noes! Is it really showing one’s age to love Dressy Bessy? In that case, I’m in trouble. I adore that band.

    My FRT:
    1. Never Let Me Down Again - Depeche Mode
    2. Budo - Miles Davis and John Coltrane

    Oops forgot:
    Ferris Beuller’s Day Off

  22. I think my favorite coming of age movie is Better Off Dead, which is just freaking weird.

  23. For a little older audience: Breaking Away

That was a film that really made a deep impression on me…

  24. It’s a different sort of “coming-of-age” movie, but I really like All The Real Girls.

    1. Ewnet Yet Lagegnesh - Bahta Gebre-Heywet
    2. Untitled Song for Latin America - The Minutement
    3. Easy Plateau - Ryan Adams

“Yulunga (Spirit Dance)” - Dead Can Dance
“Ginger Park” - 50 Foot Wave
“Love Among The Sailors” - Laurie Anderson
    “Highway” - Eliza Gilkyson

Hmm, the closest thing to a coming of age movie at the age when I was coming of age is Harold and Maude. Great movie, strange age.

  26. Pan American

Platoon (At least the storyline - the casting- like in all war movies is too old. I guess no one wants to see even fictional 18 year olds bleed out.)

Not one for Hughes cheez but liked Fast Times.

    This is England was good.

  27. magtured

I’m apparently quite a bit older than most here. Best coming of age movie from when I was in high school is “The Last Picture Show.” From the same era, “Red Sky at Morning” left an impression, although I haven’t seen it since the “70s.

  28. magtured

I’m apparently older than most here. “The Last Picture Show” is my favorite coming of age movie. I also liked “Red Sky at Morning” back in high school (oh so long ago).

  29. holly e. r.

Persepolis- been meaning to catch that. too bad I stayed out way too late last night. Breakfast Club? Too cheesy? Loved it when it came out, but, then, I was in 1st or 2nd grade. Cat show- boyfriend wanted to ask where are the wires (as in a martial arts movie).
    1. Varnaline- “Want You”
    2. La Peste-”Someone Somewhere”
    3. Single Frame- “Exact Copy”

    2. (Wearing Your) Heart on Your Sleeve by Motorhead.

    8. Transparent Lover by Robyn Hitchcock

    10. Goodbye Blues by Blind Willie McTell

Favorite coming of age: the first 30 minutes to an hour of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America (featuring touching scenes with a very young Jennifer Connelly). The thing I relate to best is the minute or so of nerd-bus footage in Sixteen Candles. Presented for you here.

  32. Karenia Brevis

    1) Th’ Faith Healers, “Moona-Ina-Joona”
    2) Richard and Linda Thompson, “Borrowed Time”

    10) Dumbwaiters, “Simple Metal From the Heart”

  33. Caroline

    Coming of age movies, hmmm.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is one of them, for most of the reasons that Keith, above, listed.

“Magnolia,” which I am the only person in the entire universe who actually liked.

“Orange County,” oddly enough — because the fits of screaming fury it sent me into (WTF HOW COULD YOU TURN DOWN STANFORD?!?!) taught me a lot about my own priorities and neuroses and forced me into a phase of dealing with the fact that I didn’t go to a “status” college.

“Schindler’s List” which isn’t about coming of age, but was a definite coming of age experience for me. These things really happened, and watching that film at age 13 made me learn that. (We watched it as an optional portion of my 8th grade English class, with showings in the evening, students required to be accompanied by at least one parent.)

  34. Caroline,

You’re not the only one who liked Magnolia. I really don’t understand the hate it attracts.

It struck me that no one’s mentioned the Graduate. Probably a good indicator of the average Pandagonian age.

  35. My FRT:

    01. Workingman’s Blues [06:05] — Bob Dylan
    02. Achilles Last Stand [10:22] — Led Zeppelin
    03. Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon) [08:23] — Moody Blues
    04. Endless Dream [15:40] — Yes
    05. 905 [04:03] — The Who

    09. One of These Nights [04:47] — Eagles
    10. Same Old Blues [08:15] — Eric Clapton

  37. jamesf

    “Better Off Dead” is
    1) amazing
    2) better than all the other movies mentioned here
    3) not really a coming-of-age movie at all.

My list would include “the 400 Blows” and “Spirit of the Beehive.” Also saw “Blame it On Fidel” recently, which I enjoyed.

  38. jamesf

Ooh, good call on “Last Picture Show” also.

Interesting enough, Timothy Bottoms who plays Sonny in “Last Picture Show” is the same actor who played George Bush on “That’s My Bush” (the short lived live-action sitcom from 2000 by the guys who made “South Park”)

Bonus Breakfast Feud: Laughing at Life-Lester Young

  40. The Graduate is a great coming of age movie but I think it’s a little more of the Boomer Generation and from what I can tell, most of us here Pandagonians are children of the eighties. The Graduate has at it’s heart the fear of selling out. By the eighties, it was plain and obvious to every one under the age of twenty that selling out was inevitable but the choice was yours as to how to sell out. Which is why no one, I notice, has mentioned Reality Bites which, at the time was billed as the quintessential Gen X film but really had a Boomer sensibility to it.

  41. dooflow

I nominate: “Y Tu Mama Tambien” (Class Conscious Porkies)
“Deadly Friend” (Wes Craven, Robot teenage Girl), “Porkies” (that…tallywacker), “Ginger Snaps” & “Little Mermaid” “Pixote” “Fanny & Alexander” “Visionquest”

    3. Freedom–George Michael
    2. Your Loving Arms–Billy Ray Martin
    1. On/Off–Snow Patrol

    Bonus
Orik Gullaganda (When Apricot Blossoms)–Sevara Nazarkhan

And as to coming of age films, I use “Muriel’s Wedding” as an example in my Narrative class.

  43. Keith,

You’re right, but it’s very sad, since I steadfastly rejected that message as a GenXer. Alex P. Keaton did warn me, and yet too much Neverending Story, Cloak & Dagger, and Spielbergian do-goodery led me to believe one could live ideologically rather than by the pocketbook.

    My therapist loves me.

  44. Sarcastro

Repo Man was my coming of age movie.

    Plate of shrimp edition:

    1. “Anna Lee” - Robert Nighthawk
    2. “Everything Turns Grey” - Agent Orange
    3. “You Really Got Me” - The Kinks
    4. “Whiskey Blues” - Muddy Waters
    5. “I’m A Steady Rollin’ Man” - Robert Johnson
    6. “Rockin’ The Bronx” - Black 47
    7. “Fortunate Son” - Uncle Tupelo
    8. “Thunderhorse” - Dethklok
    9. “Bernie” - John Spencer Blues Explosion
    10. “Cover Me” - Bruce Springsteen

Bonus: “Peace (Leprechaun)” - Everton Chambers (couldn’t go a whole list without some roots)

  45. Here’s my random 10 (duo):

    Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey by Little Richard
    Midvikudags by Björk )
Because The Night by The Patti Smith Group
7 and 7 Is by The Ramones
Little By Little by B.B. King & Lowell Fulson
    Michelle by The Beatles
    Paperback Writer by The Beatles
Burnin’ For You by Blue Öyster Cult
Dedicated Follower Of Fashion by The Kinks
Rockin’ In The Free World (Live Acoustic Version) by Neil Young
    Your Cloud by Tori Amos

I think my favorite coming of age piece (TV) is Freaks and Geeks. I’m not very good at these best of things, because I usually forget something I really like.

  46. redmountain

Thanks for posting the Sleater-Kinney performance, Amanda. Good stuff indeed. Why, oh why did such a great band have to break up at the peak of their creative powers? Bummer for SK fans like me.

As for coming of age movie……Thirteen - partially written by a thirteen year old girl. Great flick. I’m getting ready to use Into the Wild in my Environmental Studies class, which is, somewhat of a coming of age movie although I’m not using it as such in this particular course.

  47. I can’t believe I forgot “The Last Picture Show”. What a great movie, and so, so Texas. The only other movie that captures Texas adolescence as well is “Dazed and Confused”, which more accurately came out when I actually came of age than anything on my list, all of which came out before or after my adolescence, and “The Tin Drum” before I was born.

  48. I’m going to date myself, but man, did I love these two:

Little Darlings (Tatum O’Neal and the divine Kristy McNichol)

    Foxes (Jodie Foster)

  49. The Crapture

    6. Rolling Stones - “Beast of Burden”
    5. Smithereens - “Drown in my own tears”
    4. Nine Inch Nails “That’s what i get”
    3. Gene Loves Jezebel “Desire”
    2. Dead or Alive “You Spin Me Round”
    1. Dead Can Dance “The ubiquitous Mister Lovegrove”

    (Bonus tracks)
    a. Depeche Mode “Strangelove” “Master and Servant” “Something to do”

    b. Nine Inch Nails “The only time”

“Breaking Away” - great coming of age movie. Really just a great movie. The serenade scene is wonderful, so is the bicycle - truck race.

  55. here’s a question for the literary folks: what’s the difference between a “coming of age narrative” and a Bildungsroman?

The classic forms of the latter have things like escaping the control of the father/violating a sense of communal standards/a new stasis in which things have been “set right,” etc….

we are, after all, talking about a narrative form. Is there something that separates “coming of age” from “bildungsroman”?

Best coming of age film ever: Blue Velvet, by David Lynch.

“Dazed and Confused” is the movie I always wanted to make when I was in HS–because that’s how HS was when I was there, right down to the arcade (which was across the street from my HS,)and the fight at the keg party.
