A faux album cover: In stop-motion photography, a teenager does a parkour trick over a park bench, the three images showing the progression of the trick; in the upper left corner against the sky is the band title, Cobra Slice; in the upper right corner against the sky is the album title, make life worth living

So if this isn’t a time-waster from heaven, I don’t know what is.

Make your own album cover! Here’s what you do: The article you get when you click this link is your band title.

The last four words of the last quote on this page is your album title (you will probably need to reload the page if you do more than one, if you’re like me.)

And the third picture, the upper right hand, will be your cover photo.

I’m adding a rule that you have to square off whatever picture you get, so that it’s a realistic album cover.

Via, and a link to more, the awesome artist Jenn Manley Lee.

More of mine after the jump; please post yours in comments, unless you find this activity somehow resistable, which I doubt.

Fake album cover: A woman stands on an industrial grating against a large blank orange wall. Below the grating reads the band name: 1983 IAAF World Cross Country Championships; on the orange wall, descending from upper left to middle right, reads the album title: worthy, of great, respect.

Fake album cover: Several members of an apparent mountain tribe run towards the camera from various distances as their herd of cattle remains in the background. On black bars above and below the images are the band name and album title, respectively: The French Studies Bulletin, Man Looked Honest Enough.

I swear I didn’t plan these, but the well-read will no doubt agree with me that this last one is the greatest album cover ever. And yes, hyphenated words count as one.

Fake album cover: An orangutan lays on a rock, his arm pulling leaves out. Against the water is the band name: Guilds of Ankh-Morpork. On a white field at the bottom of the picture is the title: well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed.

…Speaking of album covers and therefore albums, if a person similar to but legally distinct from me had somehow managed to get ahold of an advance copy of the new Helio Sequence album, that person would definitely recommend that you give the samples a listen and buy it when it comes out tomorrow. If.

  1. OneirosDreaming

If I was browsing at Easy Street and saw the French Studies one, I would so buy it.

  2. Sycorax, Fiend of Welsh Rarebit

Looks like the meme is mutating; I ran across it with a different set of rules that included instructions for the back cover (with track listings). That was a serious time-suck, mainly because I have 19,000 fonts and am the kind of person who has to find JUST THE RIGHT ONE for projects such as this.

  3. Didn’t let me. OK, here:

  4. Here’s mine. I quite like it. That’s gotta be one of the best band names I ever heard.

  5. George

The Ankh-Morpork one is utterly appropriate.

    To the Library!

  6. Here’s mine:

My first effort was a total bust, but on my second effort my album “Credit They Eventually Find” had promising cover art. However, nobody’s going to buy an album from a band called “Dannii Minogue,” are they?

  8. Atrobean

    Meh, hopefully the link works.

    http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/atrobean/albumcovernyphaea.jpg

I did select a photo that was 2nd instead of 3rd, but it was too good to pass up, all things considered.

  9. OMG. I’m almost tempted to learn to Photoshop just for this.

“The Adventures of Maisie”, _Singing About Toilet Paper_., with this image - http://www.flickr.com/photos/hanfcrafted/2226583804/

  10. I’m rather proud of mine. The best combo I had was “You Have a Dictatorship” by Nova Scotia Association of Realtors. Which could totally be a real album.

  11. Mine’s here. Kind of uninspired band name and image, but I do like the album title.

  12. Jogger

This is cool. Check out mine at my blog. I cheated by taking the last three words of the quote.

    Jogger

  13. Nice, Auguste! Here’s my submission.

  14. My computer is fucking up or I’d do one. I had a really great one I was working on, too, but my computer is on its last leg.

  15. I wasn’t going to do this immediately, but then I got the Best. Band name. Ever.

So, I present the debut of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary (an indie queerrock band if ever one existed).

  16. Mark

My computer keeps locking up on the picture part, but the band name is Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters. Which I thought was fucking awesome.

  17. Linnaeus

How do you put the words on your photo? Do you need Photoshop to do it?

  18. There are other programs, too.

  19. Holly

Here’s mine, I got a pretty good one on all counts.

  20. Atrobean

Any photo editor should pretty much do it. There are also online photo editors that will allow you to put text on an image. YMMV. Here is a link to one:

  22. I’ve got one. The band name is Anticato and the title is “Of Portraits By Picasso”.

  23. Dick Woodcock

Here’s mine. It seems like a band named Caçapava might take themselves too seriously.

  24. marijane

I don’t care for the image I got, but the band name and album title are worth delurking for, I think.

    Fun meme!

  25. marijane

Oops, left out a “. Try this instead.

  26. VeriteBlesse

Flickr won’t let me save or copy any photos; how do I grab them to alter and post them?

  27. aislingeach

    One and two.

  28. I lost the photo link (little boy looking over a skateboard in b&w); but the band name was “Porsild” and album title was “food for a random fancy.”

Lovely game. Reminds me of reading articles at work and exclaiming “Hey! ‘Massive Nasal Polyposis’ would be a GREAT name for a band!”

  29. felagund

I’m on the work computer, so I can’t Photoshop.

This is a truly awesome timewaster, though. I didn’t want to grade those quizzes, anyway.

My band name is Area Code 614. Album title: Feel the Fear.
    Here’s the cover pic:

I have no idea where area code 614 is, which makes it even better.

The best part was that the first two band names I got were Guided by Voices and Gene Loves Jezebel.

  30. karpad

  31. Personally, I’m fond of Inkscape as an image creation tool.

  32. To Be Cary Grant.

(Good, but I like their later album, Becoming Carrie Brownstein, better.)

  33. grolby

    Yeah, I made a couple.

    First, the oh-so-ironically-hip ric byrne.

And second, the almost-painfully self-consciously named Urad.

    This is fun!

  34. Atrobean

RE: Flickr won’t let me save or copy any photos; how do I grab them to alter and post them?

    See:

    or

    http://www.ehow.com/how_4939_download-picture-internet.html

another option is to use the print screen key and then crop the image in a photo editor.

    Happy album cover making.

  35. Sam

The title of my band is “Best of the Doobie Brothers”. Thiunk that would fly?

  36. WillyGus

  37. Janis

I’m apparently the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Hee!

  38. The title of my band is “Best of the Doobie Brothers”. Thiunk that would fly?

Only if your album title was “null set.”

  39. Supercool!

My band is “OC Transpo Routes”

Our album is “I’d be irresponsible, too.”

Picture was a cool close up of a tulip.

Awesome. I feel like a cool kid.

  41. This is awesome. mine. It came out so pop albumy.

  42. Here are mine.

  43. I’m now officially addicted to this. Thanks, Auguste!

So far, my favorite band name generated is Silent Call.

And the best band name/album-title combo is Luci Baines Johnson Regains Its Original Dimensions. A comeback album, natch.

  44. Aurorasbored

Hello Detroit! We are Sober Living Environment and now our lead singer Jay is gonna slow it down (some more…for this sounds like a perversion of the solid 90s grunge band name with 00s emo rot as the title) , for the ladies from our new album “The Objects It Loves” ….rock on!

All the pictures I got kinda sucked, however.

  45. My band is Leonardo de Oliveira Clemente (an actual living person). The album title is the fabulous “love just the same.”

But I got hung up on the album cover, because it was on flickr, all rights reserved, and I do have a bit of respect for copyright.

Maybe I’ll refresh til I get something creative commons.

  46. Oh, this is too much fun…how ’bout:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/reznicek111/2229099636/

“A Stranger Than Fiction” by Amsterdam Stock Exchange?

  47. FlipYrWhig

    Band: “The Vagrant”
Album Title: “It Is the Deal”
Cover Art: Red-and-white striped tablecloth with a translucent blue plate on it, thus mimicking the US flag.

    Wholly believable.

I’d photoshop it if I weren’t about to head out, and if I weren’t the sort of person who would turn the whole thing from a novelty to a total immersion.

  48. Damian

This is beyond great. In fact, I was recently cajoled into teaching a class in “Introduction to Multimedia” and one of our topics is beginning Photoshop. I’m going to use this as an assigment! I took the idea of making it square (300 x 300) and added another step. The first image is the background, but then I’m going to have them reload the page and take another image and cut something out of it to overlay on the first image. (For instance in my creation, the Starbuck’s cup is from the second image.) Then use fonts, filters, and layer effects to give all the elements some snap.

The end result will be, I think, an exercise in which they’ll use a large selection of basic Photoshop tools to create a neat-o bit of art. Thanks for the article!

    My Album

    —Damian
(The image will eventually be removed from the server, of course.)

  49. Dr. Locrian

Ha ha ha ha. Mine was so appropriate for my tastes:

    Band name: Basellandschaftliche Zeitung
Album Title: While Thinking of Art
Cover Art: a leafless tree in a desolate plain.

All I need now is some corpsepaint and spiked bracelets.

  50. FlipYrWhig

    Dr. Loc, that’s a keeper.

  51. FlipYrWhig

Great album title on my last round, and I had to share: “Incest and Folk Dancing.”

  52. David Simon

On the very first try: Adalia - Something You Rise Above.

Not especially hip… but I like it anyways. Looks like it would be a Sade tribute, maybe.

  53. @ FlipYrWig: was the relevant quote something along the lines of “try anything once in life, except…”? :)

  54. Hekie

I got an actual rock singer for my band title, boo!

  55. Hekie

Oh, and album name was “Trees with your Face” - I think it’s an album of songs on love and loss.

  56. I love the French Studies Bulletin!

    Mine are here:

    Display: make anything seem possible

Francis Blomefield: only applications of science

    Dangerous, this!
