“Some people think [the Republican presidential race] has come down to McCain, Romney, and - just because Giuliani hasn’t been beaten yet - Giuliani.”
– Chris Matthews on Hardball, apparently not noticing the poor showings of Hizzoner in the GOP primaries thus far.

What Kool-Aid is he imbibing? Unlike the Giuliani campaign, which is bleating that it all starts in Florida (good luck with that!), what is the MSNBC talking head (and alleged journalist and pontificator) doing shilling that line?

Look at the facts, Chris — whenever Rudy’s been on the ballot he’s been smoked. (h/t Think Progress):

fifth in Iowa (4 percent, just above Duncan Hunter’s 1%; Ron Paul bested Rudy)
fourth in New Hampshire (9 percent, with Ron Paul at 8%)
sixth in Michigan (3 percent, just above “Uncommitted”)
sixth in Nevada (4 percent, with “America’s Mayor” sweeping up the floor with fellow cellar dwellers Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter)
sixth in South Carolina (2 percent, Ron Paul beats him again, with Rudy only above Hunter, who finished with 0%)

***

UPDATE: With the latest Rasmussen poll showing Rudy’s behind both Romney and McCain in Florida, it looks like the expectation that the Sunshine State is his firewall is being rapidly dialed back. (TPM):

Just how panicked is Rudy Giuliani starting to look? After initially trying to play in various other states and then pulling out in order to bet it all on Florida, he’s now downplaying the need to win a primary even in Florida.

In an interview on Fox News today, Rudy was asked by Neil Cavuto if he needed to win in the Sunshine State. “I don’t think any candidate ever puts himself in a corner and says, must win, have to win, must win,” Rudy said.

Nice of you to notice that Ron is beating Rudy everywhere they go. Maybe it’s just some blowback, but Rudy wouldn’t understand that.

  2. “Nice of you to notice that Ron is beating Rudy everywhere they go.”

…and I suppose you have some intelligent reason why that little fact is important? Especially given that there is zero chance he will be a factor in November?

The fact that Rudy isn’t able to con enough wingnuts into supporting him is an indication that there may actually be some functioning brains among the wingnut hordes.

    OTOH, McCain, Romney, Huckabee…

I figure there’s a 50% likelihood of a brokered Republican convention. Unless they figure they’ve boobytrapped POTUS well enough put so much shit on the next (Democratic) president’s plate that 2012 will be a breeze for the Republican Chosen One…? (Jeb?)

  3. I love the fact that Ron Paul has become the minimum standard for bloggers–we’re basically saying that if you can’t beat this assclown, then you really shouldn’t even be part of the discussion. He’s the Mario Mendoza of presidential candidates.

But never count Rudy out. I’m sure that the ‘loyal Bushies’ have been feverishly working on a bag of dirty tricks to unleash on the country.

I get the feeling that Rudy makes the ‘military/industrial complex’ get a platinum woody over thoughts of Rudy escalating Bush’s war on democracy across the world. Rudy represents the fearful and frightened component of the GOP followers. I fear that he’s just not getting on the stage and saving his hate and fear for some incident or trigger that hasn’t happened yet. I don’t believe that 9/11/2001 was staged entirely by the Bushist junta but I doubt that they could have thought up a better bludgeon to use on our society to achieve what they have since.

We know that they have no honor. We know that we can’t trust them. I wouldn’t count Rudy out until he is back home (wherever that is) torturing kittens in his basement and shuttling his new wife-to-be around at other people’s expense.

That’s all well and good Pinky but why not just go with Huckabee, who will do everything Rudy will, plus wrap it up in Religious language and smile like he means it? Best of both worlds.

On the other hand, I was really pissed off when listening to a TV commentary on the Nevada returns and some idiot was saying “he’s out” or “he’s definately finished” or “we expect him to quit soon”. This asshat kid was supposed to be reading off the numbers as they came over - not offering his ill-considered opinions on who was in and who was out and who should quit now based on a single state showing - particularly when that single state doesn’t even have a million people!!

Oh, but he was hired at an entry level to read something on the air - and his babyboomer mommy and daddy told him that makes him the Anchorman and all-around authority! Why the even let this dope near a microphone I don’t understand - unless he was reading what the particular network wanted him to say! The net effect of all of this blather isn’t journalism - it is a giant corporate push poll!

Maybe Rudy’s pinning his hopes on a brokered convention, where all the Republican movers and shakers turn to the ultimate oracle of electability, CHRIS MATTHEWS, for his god-like pronouncement of the one, true reincarnation of Ronald Reagan.

  8. It’s time for Chris’s employers to recognize that he just isn’t competent as an analyst and send him packing.

  9. The only reason is that Mr Giuliani hasn’t really chosen to contest any of the previous states; that lets some people say, with a relatvely straight face, that he hasn’t really,/i> beenm beaten yet.

Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich haven’t been beaten yet either — in that they haven’t withdrawn from the race. It’s prety much the same thing for Mr Giuliani.

  10. Oops! Unclosed code in the previous message. Sorry.

  11. “Maybe Rudy’s pinning his hopes on a brokered convention, where all the Republican movers and shakers turn to the ultimate oracle of electability, CHRIS MATTHEWS, for his god-like pronouncement of the one, true reincarnation of Ronald Reagan.”

I can picture it now, Chris Matthews, heeding his nation desperate call for a manly leader to guide us through these troubled times, retires to his basement.

There he sits on a three-legged stool, and as he sways under the influence of the aftershave fumes coming off the body of Fred Thompson - who is passed out and lying on the basement floor - Chris babbles incoherently, with Joe Scarborough watching and listening in order to interpret what Chris says in order to determine who the Next Great Republican Leader will be.

The two men, fully aware of the great importance of their pronouncement, emerge shaken but excited. The eagerly waiting press corp quickly shares the good news with the rest of America…

  12. Well, who knows? Maybe Pennsylvania’s late primary really will be a birthday present to me! :)

  13. Tlazolteotl

    @6:

Actually, Nevada has nearly 2.5 million in population.

  14. “…Nevada has nearly 2.5 million in population.”

    …out of a US population of 300 million. Why that’s almost 1%!!!…

  15. (to add to MikeEss, a la South Park)

…but before they can go on air, the entire press corp somehow lose all of their notes! So they all come back and ask for the interpretation again. Matthews and Scarborough return to the basement and after a few minutes, emerge with a new and different interpretation, this time for Romney. And because it IS different, that PROVES it is a true interpretation!

    Dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb!

(Hey- it’s either that or say that Chris Mattews seeing his shadow means 6 more weeks of primaries…)

  16. “And because it IS different, that PROVES it is a true interpretation!”

…and somehow, regardless of who is The Chosen One, or how his name is arrived at, It’s Good For Republicans!!!…

  17. Here’s a take on Matthews’s statement:

Rudy has pulled out of all the early states. That doesn’t mean he didn’t run there. But, the longer he runs in a state, the lower his numbers seem to go. Tweety is seeming to say that because Rudy hasn’t seriously contested any of these early states, he hasn’t “really” lost yet. The problem is that he did contest them, found it a losing proposition, and moved his attempts elsewhere.

    He’s been beaten soundly.

Tweety’s mancrush is kind of creepy.

  18. Tweety’s comment is premised on the notion that Giuliani did not try to compete in any of the states so far. There are two problems with this notion:

First, who cares? He still lost. A forfeit is just another form of loss.

Second, it’s not even true. Guiliani was spending like a drunken sailor in NH until he decided to pull out in December. Between November 10 and December 9 of last year alone he spent $1.7 million in NH, more than Romney ($1.3 million) and McCain ($1.2). Competing and quitting because you’re losing is not the same thing as not competing.

Of course, the Giuliani campaign has simply lied about this, claiming that they didn’t even try to win any of these states. And the MSM is, of course, either too damn lazy or too committed to reporting-as-stenography to spend thirty seconds on Google (or just look at their own reporting from two months ago) and call Giuliani on his lies.

  19. I get the feeling that Rudy makes the ‘military/industrial complex’ get a platinum woody over thoughts of Rudy escalating Bush’s war on democracy across the world.

I get the feeling that this entire election makes the military-industrial complex get a platinum woody over the fact that none of the major candidates from either major party has expressed any interest in reigning in our bloated defense budgets.

I’d LOVE to see Rudy, Mitt, McCain and Huckabee justify THIS, but it’ll never happen.

  21. I guess he really doesn’t like Huckabee? You’d think he’d still have at least as much of a shot at the nomination as Giuliani.
