    From Proverbs 31:

10Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

Not a great deal in there about sex, or abortion–a virtuous woman seems to be a woman who is a hard worker and a successful businessperson, while remaining a decent, kind individual.

  2. IMO, a “virtuous woman” is she who grabs this sort of sign and stuffs it up the ass of the bigoted SOB holding the fucking thing.

in other news Roe ( of Roe vs Wade fame) just endorsed Ron Paul

Thanks for the laugh Louise. To celebrate the day, I sent $50 to Planned Parenthood.

  5. Bitter Scribe

I’m going to use that as my next pickup line. “Do you seeketh wool and flax?”

Also, wasn’t “Rebellious Jezebels” a ’70s punk band?

  6. rowmyboat

Ooo… can I be a rebellious Jezebel too? Sounds like fun.

  7. Richard Gadsden

Congrats, Amanda on being officially endorsed as a “prominent” feminist.

  8. Well, I’m no Biblical scholar, but I gotta say that the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31 sounds kinda hot. Especially those verses 20 and 26.

And kudos, Amanda! It’s just like Proverbs 31:29, “She is a prominent feminist at Salon, and wieldeth a mighty disco ball.”

  9. I’m going to use that as my next pickup line. “Do you seeketh wool and flax?”

Hey baby, come back to my place and we’ll girdeth our loins with strength.

For some reason, that sign reminds me of a paraphrased onion quote, “There’s nothing that gets the attention of Rebellious Jezebels like a sign held aloft.”

  10. realityfighter, Pretender to the Salsa Throne

Come on, when was the last time you insulted someone by calling them rebellious? I’m pretty sure that’s a compliment.

  11. Hey baby, come back to my place and we’ll girdeth our loins with strength.

You gotta be careful with those biblical babes. Judges 4:21 adds a whole new meaning to getting hammered with a one-night stand.

  12. Amanda, congrats on the Salon guest spot!

  13. Ultra Magnus

Good stuff at Salon, Amanda. Happy RvW!

  14. I’ve been pro-choice for about as long as I can remember. However, there was one piece, Ani DiFranco’s “Tiptoeing”, that did something for me, though I can not necessarily say what it was–it provided a voice to the issue I hadn’t heard before, especially from a mass mediated output.

I have heard similar voices plenty in subsequent conversations with women who have had abortions. Roe isn’t without its flaws, but it’s damned well worth protecting.

  15. Ms. Kate

Rebellious Jezebels? That is sooooo a fabulous band name! Didn’t they open for Hole?

  16. For some reason, that article isn’t working for me. All I’m getting is the introduction.

  17. I find it pretty funny that the old asshat decided on that particular proverb to try and scold women like us - it’s just about as feminist as a chapter in the Bible can get.

  18. The sign looks like the same art as the silly “Kitchen–NOW” sign someone had at a feminist rally last year. Maybe there’s a Misogyny Press that does all their sign work?

  19. Tyro

Come on, when was the last time you insulted someone by calling them rebellious?

I had an old girlfriend who derided certain people and habits she disliked by calling them “defiant.”

  20. Nick

I just Googled “Rebellious Jezebels” - and what d’ya know, it turns out they ARE a band! The Rebellious Jezebels were apparently the backing band for Sandra Bernhard in a stage show last year. Here’s the first link that came up:

  21. I find it difficult to take seriously the advice of signage which does not capitalize properly. Or is the lowercase “virtuous woman” a Freudian slip showing that even “virtuous” women aren’t Quite Good Enough? :P

I think a constructive step forward would be a reversal of Roe v. Wade, in conjunction with the Court adopting a “Freedom of Religion” right to decide when “life” or “life with rights” begins, one that each person (woman) could decide for herself. That would be a much more honest approach and accomplish, not the same thing, but really even more than Roe. A constitutional right based upon freedom of religion would leave the states much less wiggle room for infringement on that right than the approch the Roe Court took. What strange bedfellows that approach might make for, with liberals and atheists endorsing a “religious” argument to accomplish the goal of legalizing abortion.

Could this Court move in that direction? Probably not. Although for the same reasons these Justices are probably not sympathetic to abortion, they might be sympathetic to an argument based on religious freedom.

Well, that’s a partcularly spectacularly silly idea. So, I could just exercise my freedom to decide you are not alive, and grind you up for fertilizer?

Let’s stick with the Constitution we have, rather than invent a new one. Roe v Wade works just fine, as long as the courts will enforce it.

  24. Libertarian, it’s total fantasy that anything of the sort could get traction with the Roberts Court. Thomas is the only one of the conservative wing that decides as if he really believes what he purports to believe. He’d be the only one who could even be imagined going along with something along those lines.

You know, the ‘virtuous woman’ thing?

Other translations have ‘woman of valour’ in its place. So, you know, Proverbs 31:10? Not exactly the most appropriate verse for the oppression of women.

yeah, soopermouse. it’s kind of creepy.

she (the woman known as “Roe”, I’m afraid I don’t remember her real name - I should look it up) changed her mind sometime in the eighties, if I recall correctly. came to jesus, embraced the antiabortion movement, behaved in a dramatically contrite manner in public, the whole deal. Now they parade her around this time every year like a big shiny trophy.

Sorry, I don’t see the shift. Right now, a woman who feels that life begins at conception is perfectly free to feel compelled to carry a pregnancy to term, and to consider what she has inside her is a person.

Roe in no way compels her to feel otherwise, nor, unless I am very wrong, has Roe been used to legally compel an abortion.

If you think Roe has created some messy lawsuits, try the inevitable aftermath of “your legal rights are whatever you decide they are.”

Just as with marriage, there needs to be a clear distinction between the legal status and whatever spiritual or religious overlay people want to add. It is not that those spiritual or religious beliefs are held invalid, it is that they are not to be the basis of the legal system.

  29. I think “rebellious” is an insult because it’s supposed to have a condescending connotation to it. Like teenagers are being “rebellious”. It’s supposed to be infantilizing.

  30. antiprincess

    thanks, MikeEss.

I absolutely need a t-shirt that says “Rebellious Jezebels.” Wonder if cafe press already has some…
