My review of The Terror Dream is up at TPM Cafe. I expect that Stephen Ducat, who wrote The Wimp Factor and Katha Pollitt will have their reviews up tomorrow night. And of course, the author herself has the kick-off post here.

Our book club on the book is November 19th. I have more thoughts then. Extra thanks to Roxanne for giving me an angle that’s not included in my Pandagon post so that I’m not repeating myself overmuch.

Also, Jessica and Ann ask male politicians to quit playing the gender card.

I got the book as an audiobook (which I find usually takes at least two listenings to get the same depth as reading, but I like being able to listen while I tinker). On first listening I found a lot to like about it - I feel like a really learned something, and expect to learn more on future listenings. I’m looking forward to the discussion here when the time comes.

The TPM thread following Faludi’s post (the one linked here) made me want to tear my hair out.

It is so infuriating to watch a bunch of people try to shoot down an argument that they only assume she is making. And it a serious pet peeve of mine when people will attack an author for a lack of depth based on only reading the blurb on the back cover. Umm, the details are what the other 400 pages are for. If the agrument could be put forth and supported in a couple of paragraphs, there wouldn’t be a book at all. Jeez.

Is it standard that book posts at TPM get dominated by people who have clearly not read the book?

(Sorry if this is a double. I did wait like 30 minutes
    before re-post)

  4. ugh. They’re quite right. this shit has no business in politics. Politicians are allowed to be GAR (Abraham Lincoln fought a duel with sabers on the banks of the Mississippi), but it isn’t a fucking requirement, and they’re often better off without it.

GAR is fictional. Human beings aren’t actually supposed to be GAR. and there’s nothing more pathetic than attempting and failing.

Excellent review, Amanda. I also liked Stephen Ducat’s review. Unfortunately, poor Stephen seems to have attracted a particularly noxious troll. I was at least able to fill in several squares in my ev-psych bingo card on that one.

  6. Reading the comments below Stephen Ducat’s review (as well as several of Faludi’s posts) was exhausting…though the troll he acquired did act as a good exhibit A for Ducat’s comments about the failure of the left to recognize the importance of mythology.
