It was hard to read Bam Bam's piece over at WingNutDaily without laughing out loud. His 19-year-old brother Jared questioned the Concerned Women for America head about Matts endless obsession with all things homosexual, when there is so much other sinning going on in the "Christian" community. His brother wrote:
Christians, as a whole, focus too much on the homosexual issue alone. They attack it solely, denounce it and live whichever way they please. Adultery, fornication, racism, pride, jealousy, selfish ambition, drunkenness – all of these immoral acts take to the background in view of homosexuality, and so we as Christians are set up as anti-gay instead of anti-immorality. We need to end our own hypocrisy, all of us, I as much as any, so that we can more blamelessly broach this subject and others.Whoa. Are they from the same gene pool? Matt thanked Jared for his analysis, but quickly zeroed in on "Christians, as a whole, focus too much on the homosexual issue alone."
Gee, I wonder why? Please try and wrap your minds around this backflip, double-twist defense of what he sees as lesser sins than, say, adultery (which the bible says you must be stoned for). Keep your eye on the ball, Bam Bam says, because none of those sins has the backing of an army of politically savvy, rich sodomites behind them. The rant continues below the fold.
Where in my copy of the Homosexual Agenda are we forcing anyone to be a proponent of sodomy? Well, Barber goes right on to the Nazi/war metaphor. How can he type this and not laugh at his own insane writing?Unlike the sin of homosexuality, the other sins you cite – the sins of adultery, fornication, racism, pride, jealousy, selfish ambition and drunkenness – do not have the benefit of a tremendously powerful and prosperous lobby that is blindly supported by people in positions of political influence, and other leftists in media and elsewhere who have been duped by the crafty and disingenuous rhetoric of "tolerance" and "diversity."
Proponents, practitioners and enablers of homosexual sin demand that we all renounce God's express condemnation of such conduct and embrace this spiritually and physically destructive behavior as virtuous – as a wholly equal, alternative sexual "orientation." They believe that the only thing objectively immoral is to reckon there are things objectively immoral. Yet, when others find freedom from the homosexual lifestyle – as untold thousands have done through the loving and redemptive power of Jesus Christ – those former homosexuals are maliciously maligned for committing a betrayal most immoral. Like that popular hotel in California, "You can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave."
And so, fervent and relentless homosexual propaganda goose-steps along, trampling upon those who observe traditional notions of sexual morality. This sets homosexual sin worlds apart from the other sins you reference. Therefore, we Christians are left no choice but to assign homosexual sin significance commensurate with that which it demands.I'll have to ask my buddy Joe Murray if Matt cribbed from his old Sodomy Squadron post. Thus we find ourselves – back against the ropes – in a fight we did not pick, struggling in a culture war we did not ask for. It's a clash of worldviews in a zero-sum-game. Make no mistake; the sin of homosexuality is the bunker-buster bomb in this war against morality.

Matt Barber is obviously gay and can probably be found in a porn shop or an airport bathroom.
Remember, the more the rail against teh gay, the more likely they are gay themselves.
adultery (which the bible says you must be stoned for).
I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.
*blink*
Adultery has a lobby in every country on earth. Whorehouses, cable television, on-line dating. Wtf, are Christians going to end the alchol-laden office party?
Pride? PRIDE? Pride > Homosexuality? What. The. Fuck. The First Sin of Lucifer is inferior to teh buttsex? Pride motivates pretty much every obnoxious thing every human in the universe has ever done or ever shall do.
If Satan was straight and Mark the Apostle were gay, these fuckers would happily worship Satan. Gotta wonder if they’re not doing it already.
Fred Clark at Slacktivist has a series of five great posts examining the reasons fundies give for all the gay-bashing, and methodically demolishes every one of their excuses.
I often recommend Fred, but it’s particularly apropos here.
Well I’m glad the asshole feels like he’s on the ropes. Let’s keep punching!
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: and he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, “Cursed are the homosexuals, and cursed are the abortionists.”
Adultery, fornication, racism, pride, jealousy, selfish ambition, drunkenness – all of these immoral acts take to the background in view of homosexuality, and so we as Christians are set up as anti-gay instead of anti-immorality.
I thought today’s so-called Christian moralists had forgotten pride is a sin.
But what … there is too a selfish ambition, well maybe not lobby, but ideology. Have these people forgotten about certain aspects of their Republican party’s platform?
Anyway, if these people have a so-called Levitical morality, how come they’ve forgotten the biggies: the laws of the first fruits, the laws of shmitta, the laws of Jubilee, the prohibition of usury, the poor tithe, the prohibition against gleaning, etc.?
I give this Jared feller a B+/A- for effort, but even he still has a looong way to go before we can say he understands a whit about Biblical morality.
The most dangerous sin is certainly the most tempting one, eh?
For typical Americans, that would be gluttony. For Christian Americans, it sounds like only the sin of sodomy calls to them from the darkest tunnel with a clear, loud voice!
Do Wingnuts celebrate All Holes Day?
OK, going over to the weblog awards page just sent me into a deep depression. Michelle Malkin is winning “Best Blog” by a mile. Among other disappointing discoveries.
At least Jared is trying to be a good christian (he’s not succeeding yet, but I’ll give him credit for trying). as for Bam Bam, will someone please tell him to just go ahead and come out of the closet already? Otherwise, we’ll have to read about him getting busted in some seedy hotel room with a young gay porn star. And nobody wants that.
Mnemosyne, thanks for jogging my memory that it’s Left Behind Friday! Going over now…
Oh, and I often wonder why they seem to think that if people are exposed to homosexuality then that’s all they’ll want. It’s got to be all projection of closeted homosexuals to think that everybody must want to do it too. “Man, if I could do a guy instead of my wife, I’d be all over it!….”
Yet, when others find freedom from the homosexual lifestyle – as untold thousands have done through the loving and redemptive power of Jesus Christ – those former homosexuals are maliciously maligned for committing a betrayal most immoral. Like that popular hotel in California, “You can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave.”
I like how he snuck in the comparison of teh gay with Satanism, seeing as it’s practically an article of faith among fundies (the kind who listen to records backward in order to hear the secret messages) that Hotel California has to do with Satan worship.
Speak for yourself, Mark. Personally, I can hardly wait.really? drunkenness doesn’t have powerfull political allies? I think Ted Kennedy’s liver begs to differ.
Dear choir,
The point these guys miss so egregiously is that being gay IS an identity, and that there is no such thing as a single “gay lifestyle” nor a single form of “homosexual behavior.”
It’s a bit like reading lists of minority groups that include “gays, blacks and women” — as though there were no black lesbians, or other combinations.
The reason there is no organized group of adulterers is that adultery is not seen as identical to heterosexuality.
It never seems to occur to these people that it is possible to live a gay lifestyle that involves integrity and fidelity, because they can’t get past the buttsex.
Don’t misread me as saying I disapprove of healthy and honest open relationships or heterosexual non-marital sex.
But the reason we won’t go away is that they have defined our existence as a sin. You can say that using your left hand to stab someone in anger is a sin, but you cannot say that simply being left-handed is a sin. Similarly, there are some pretty crappy ways that gay people treat each other, and iindividual gay people who are unhealthy, immoral, and debauched (often, the ones in the closet, apropos of nothing in particular.)
But adultery is something that people do. Being gay is what (some) people ARE. Until they get that, they will continue to bark up the wrong tree.
Besides, in Christ there is neither male nor female, so the whole point ought to be moot for anyone who actually believes in the Book. But since that passage isn’t on the bashing list, I don’t think they read it any more.
really? drunkenness doesn’t have powerfull political allies? I think Ted Kennedy’s liver begs to differ. - harlemjd
OT, but I’d say “yes” and “no”. Drunkeness has enough powerful political allies (plus there’s the memory of prohibition) that EtOH is treated very differently than, um, certain other drugs that otherwise would have similar, or even less severe, societal impacts (if they were legalized).
OTOH, nobody wants to be in favor of drunkeness. So there is no motivation to change all sorts of stupid liquor-related blue-laws (the same is true, pace the religious right, for blue laws in general, eh?).

Just sayin . . I don’t recall there ever being a bill introduced — or an amendment proposed which would have forbid adulterers from re-marrying, and it seems the drunkenness (alcohol) industry lobbies more and contributes more money then GLBT ever could dream of. Of course Barber’s equivocations are lame excuses to try to justify his his hatred and demonization of gays and lesbians. It has nothing to do with sin or God and everything to do with creating power from the fear and panic over the other.
And if selfish ambition doesn’t have powerful allies, WTF are we doing in this economic handbasket….
A word on behalf of pride: pride makes some intelligent people choose honesty when dishonesty would be more helpful too them; pride may keep a depressive from suicide; pride is a great motivator for people to make moral choices. “I’m better than that,” the proud ethicist says when they realize they can get away with wrong-doing, but choose not to.
Not to completely derail the thread, but to reply to Samantha Vimes:
Pride can be a virtue. But like all virtues, carried too far, pride is a vice. Pride is leads to contempt for others, because the prideful person says, “I am better than he is.” Pride leads to the abandonment of compassion, as the prideful person cannot say, “There but for the grace of God go I.”
Pride, IMHO, is where many conservatives and libertarians (esp. libertarians) fall. They take credit for both the privileges they have and for their luck. One caller to a liberal talk show bragged about how he saves so much because he doesn’t buy into the “boondoggle” of health insurance. He makes $100,000, and neither he nor his wife have had any serious injuries or illnesses. Yet, rather than acknowledging his good fortune, he railed against those who are “too stupid” to save money like he did, and scorned those of us who need health insurance for various medical conditions.
Because to acknowledge that you are where you are in life is in part just a crap shoot, a result of privilege that you have done nothing to deserve and good luck to avoid disasters, is to humble oneself.
So rather than humble themselves, many conservatives would rather just talk about butt sex. Because one’s sexuality is something that can be controlled. *eye roll*
Me too on Karinna’s comment. Pride is exceptionally dangerous, though useful. Teaching someone to be assertive is comparably easy. (Comparably.) Teaching someone humility may risk that person’s life.
The entire right-wing establishment is all about pride. That cognitive dissonance they practice? It works because The Rules Don’t Apply to Me. I can have Teh ButSexx but I’m Not Gay — in fact, let’s persecute those homos.
Pride is not an ephemereal threat. It really is the basis for the absolute worst things in the world.
Mark’s writing is probably an actual explanation of why gay sexuality is getting so much attention from right-wing Christians. Given a multitude of progressive causes against which the Christians could rail, they choose the one that seems to have the most momentum behind it. On a strategic level, that probably makes some sense.
I would have once said they don’t want to attack adultery because it strikes to close to home (too many of their friends do it) but that theory has been disproven by the number of outed anti-gay activists who are gay (being gay also strikes close to home, apparently).
Oh, Bitter Scribe, think of that unforntunate porn star! No one has sinned enmough to deserve to have sex with BamBam!
