Good grief. It's an endless flood of GOP sexual hypocrites. In Spokane, an alleged extortion attempt that involves a conservative (and very anti-gay) state legislator and a male escort. The story just reeks of the usual factors — the closet, self-loathing, and poor choice of rent boy. I'm sure more facts are forthcoming that will “clear up matters.”

Curtis told the Vancouver Columbian yesterday that he is not gay and did not engage in sex with the man while he was in Spokane last week attending Republican strategy sessions.
Curtis and Castagna “engaged in mutual sexual activities” at the hotel after the state lawmaker-who has opposed most gay rights legislation-rented two XXX-rated gay videos, according to allegations in a search warrant affidavit filed by Spokane Police Detective Mark Burbridge.
After the sexual encounter in the Spokane hotel room, the court documents say Castagna left with Curtis’ wallet before contacting him by phone, demanding $1,000, the affidavit says. The state lawmaker said he only had $200 and put that in an envelope for Castagna to pick up at the front desk of the Davenport Tower, the affidavit says. After picking up that money, Castagna re-contacted Curtis and demanded the additional $800.
By that point, Curtis had contacted a Washington State Patrol sergeant in Vancouver, apparently seeking help?. “Castagna threatened to publicly expose Curtis’ gay lifestyle to his wife,” if he wasn’t paid the additional sum,” the court documents allege.

What is it about the Spokane area? First the (conservative Republican)mayor getting jobs for and hitting on interns, and now this guy.
MAJeff, it’s the unbearable tension of living so close to such chill and gay-friendly places as Seattle and Portland, yet feeling consigned to the to the homophobic sticks and suburbs (wild generalization, I know). It makes them resentful about the freedom and openness their urban fellows enjoy.
Well that’s yer problem right there. The bigots like their homosexuals closeted and flaming (yeah, a tough act to combine). Queers who live normal, everyday lives make bigotry so much harder for them, and thus must be stamped out.

I grew up there and I’d say the complete and utter homophobia causes them to put up a big homophobic smoke screen to hide behind. They know coming out will result in losing jobs, being disowned etc. Its a white-bred redneck area.
Spokane isn’t really close to Seattle or Portland. Its a 5-6 hour drive if you speed like crazy the whole way. Going the speed limit pushes it up to 7. They are very close to the Idaho border and old Aryan nations compound. Does that put it in a bit more context?
And don’t forget that our illustrious mayor also had some problems keeping his hands of his boyscout troops. Plus the obligatory priest scandals of a Catholic community.
Ditto Betsy. There’s a kind of a cultural gradient as you move west to east in Washington. The Puget Sound region (and especially Seattle) is relatively gay-friendly. As you go eastward into the Eastside ‘burbs and towns/exurbs in the foothills of the Cascades, the social climate becomes increasingly conservative. When you cross the Cascades, you are in solid Republican territory, with a mix of leave-me-alone-and-don’t-raise-my-taxes types and the crowd that emphasizes social conservatism. Spokane, as the “metropolis” of eastern Washington, is the focal point of all this.
The “a” in “Spokane” is short, so it’s pronounced “spoke-ann”.

My same first reaction. Having come to terms with my sexuality I’ve lived a rather droll, if not satisfying sex life. Of course it could have something to do with not having the economic privilege to devote much time to being kinky, I dunno.
Possibly living on a Wal-Mart salary or just living with no important connections would help these boys get their priorities in order? Living a double life takes money you know.
