I second “ace” on Calvin & Hobbes. The best newspaper strip of all time, ever, period.

Ugh. Why is it that people are so intent nowadays on proving the accuracy of the “feminists have no sense of humor” stereotype?

If your definition of "sense of humor" is "laugh at something distinctly unfunny to preserve the egos of men who hate you anyway", then no, I don't have a sense of humor.

I define "sense of humor" as "amusement and pleasure in the humorous". And in fact, I'd argue that the feminine requirement at laughing at the distinctly unfunny---the one that you're putting on me---is an insult to the concept of humor.

So fuck you for trying to take away my sense of humor. I value humor much too highly to pander to make your ass feel better. Your definition of humor that encompasses this cartoon is a kind of humor that is no humor at all, and I say to you sir, get a sense of humor. And quit feeding stereotypes about the over-privileged know-nothings with no real humor and no soul who cackle at Family Circus because you're so broken inside you wouldn't know a good joke if it bit you on the ass.

Try being raped sometime and "pick your battle" then, Mike.

It's. not. funny. It's. offensive. on. many. levels. If. you. were. a. woman. maybe. that. would. sink. in.

But, since you're not, it's UNIMPORTANT to you. Fine. But how much effort does it take to STFU when you KNOW it's important to women...oh, wait. It's Just Women's Special Girly Sensitivity.

Honestly. I might as well be reading an MRA site's comments. "Pick your battles, it's just the character speaking". Nonsense. The writer went too far (and inadvertently reinforced the idiotic stereotypical ideas instead of refuting them). Period.

"How angry do we really have to get about it?"

The man has spoken, girlies. We're just silly for being angry. Whhhee! Thanks for clearing that up.

Can I giggle in girlish compliance, Mike? Would that be acceptable to you, oh great manly man lord?

Ugh. Why is it that people are so intent nowadays on proving the accuracy of the "feminists have no sense of humor" stereotype?

Not a great comic. Not funny. NOT worth savaging Tom Batiuk over less than two weeks after he killed off a decades-old character in Funky Winkerbean after a long and sensitively written battle with breast cancer. (The current strip has all the characters wearing Making Strides T-shirts, for crying out loud.) Can we not pick our battles?

Batiuk should have his hand slapped, but was this a genuine affront? No, it was a miscalculation. The Crankshaft character says nasty and insensitive things all the time, and this time he said something genuinely inappropriate. How angry do we really have to get about it?

Calvin & Hobbes still rules 12 years after it ended...my first serious exposure to gender issues probably came from Susie's interactions with Calvin.

Zits is the closest thing to a worthy successor to C&H (some of the characters even look like successors, and the respective authors were friends through Kenyon College and started their careers as rival political columnists for the Cincy Enquirer.)

If you enjoy a funny comic, I recommend "Candorville" by Darrin Bell. Amusing and it has people of color as the main characters. Shocking, I know.
