Hey, what’s up.

Listen, I know you’re busy people - so am I; that’s why I haven’t posted in about a week. And as a busy person, I know what it’s like when someone tries to dump even one more thing on my schedule. So I hesitate-it really pains me to ask this - but, if you have a spare moment and don’t need a nap or anything, do you think you could take a moment to

SAVE OUR GODDAMN REPUBLIC?

(No, I’m not actually denigrating your level of activism; that would be the rankest hypocrisy coming from me. But I thought that a momentous occasion probably deserved a little bit of fanfare, and in Auguste’s world, fanfare = irony.)

More on this. And if you live in Connecticut, Nebraska (twice over), Indiana, Idaho, Maine, or Crazytown* it’s really important you call your Senators and, you know, ask them to

SAVE OUR GODDAMN REPUBLIC.

Let’s make our elected representatives rue the day the cell phone companies started offering free long-distance**.

(Don’t forget to do this while you’re at it, if you haven’t already.)

  2. It worked! It worked! Why am I getting all teary-eyed?

    Auguste post: 3:00 pm.

Coincidence? I think not. Behold the awesome psychic power of the Pandagon posting queue.

An aunt of mine regularly reminds Susie Collins whenever she sees her at their local supermarket in Bangor that Susie works for HER… damn, I’m fed up with her spinelessness. Fairly certain she’ll be replaced by Tom Allen next-go-round.

It might also help if we vote as often as Paris Hilton does- seems she goes to the polls MUCH more often than I do. Gotta fix that, huh?

Oh, thank fucking god. I was beginning to feel like I was screaming into a void. Now I know it’s just an ear trumpet.

And if you live in Connecticut

Senator Dodd is, obviously, already on board with his own habeas restoration. And Senator Lieberman has replaced all his phone staff with a recording that says, “Fuck you, you gullible morons!” (Though if one calls on Tuesdays, one sometimes gets “No one wants to bring our troops home from Iraq more than I do. PSYCH!”)

I’m curious if this bluff-calling on filibusters will apply to the habeas bill as well as to the Reed-Levin amendment. I guess we’ll find out soon.

It very well might. What’s the downside? The general perception of the Congress is that they don’t work enough as it is, so making them pull some all-nighters, especially in service of stopping good legislation, is bound to make the Democrats look good. Republicans who complain about it open themselves up for criticism as whiny little putzes.

Question from a poly sci major:

I’m embarrassed to be asking but I’d like some info. In the link to firedoglake that Auguste provided, Christy Hardin Smith suggests that we contact our legislators and ask them to not just vote for the resolution, but to also sign on as co-sponsors to the bill.

I’d like to know, what is the result of them signing on as co-sponsors? What does being a co-sponsor require them to do in service of passing the bill - or does it not require them to do anything? I’m wondering why CHS would want more senators to be co-sponsors for reasons other than the political weight and PR value of having such an important bill be supported by a large number of Democrats.
