In memoriam
…that I bring you this news.
The first Chinese panda released into the wild after being bred in captivity has died, Chinese media has announced.
Xiang Xiang was released in April 2006 from the Wolong Giant Panda Research Centre and was said to be adjusting well to his new life.
But the five-year-old was found dead in February. Officials said his death was likely due to a fight with wild pandas.

Sad.
Still, I have a strange feeling that my own obituary will end with the phrase, “due to a fight with wild pandas.”

We can all only hope for a death so cute. Poor Xiang Xiang.

these statements are coming across as fucked up, to me. probably the only one that sees it this way.
holly r., lighten up. A little mocking tease never hurt anyone…

This is panda mocking. And it’s not appropriate for Meanagon.
My guess: Troll-bait or sarcasm.
now, now. lolanimals may be dated, but they’re certainly not mocking. At least, not of the animals.
So lame.
When BBC reported it this morning, I heard them say that the Chinese would take further precautions in the future for releasing pandas including (no joke) “training them in combat”
Maybe Pandagon could give the pandas battle tips
I would love to learn Panda-Fu. Especially the five point paw exploding heart technique.
I read this with a heavy heart
Just like your collection of flats, dear.
I kind of wonder if this isn’t the equivalent of raising a kid in a mansion and sending hir to the best private schools and then, at age 18, dumping said kid in downtown Detroit with $50 in hir pocket and saying, “Have a nice life”. I know the Chinese treat the pandas in their captive breeding program really exceptionally well; maybe Xiang Xiang had trouble coping with the hardships of life in the wild panda community.
Of course, it’s entirely possible he might have been an asshole. As non-pandas, who are we to say.

Panda-Fu can go up to six points.
Man, what is the good of having the equivalent of an opposable thumb if you never learn how to make weapons with it?
XiangXiang, we hardly knew ye.
Panda.
Gone.
I wish that someone had the audio clip of the music ESPNEWS plays when an athlete dies.
RIP Xiang Xiang.
Amanda, you should open a Panda-Fu studio over on Burnet by the tattoo museum. I think “Amanda’s Panda-Fu School of Liberal Martial Arts” has nice ring to it.
I would like to apologize for retroactively making pandas ferocious.
I read that as “Marital Arts” and my brain froze for a second.

Of course, we all know what comes next: fierce rogue battle-trained pandas in downtown Shanghai.
So, in other words, there’s no downside.
