[...] The extra-legal equivalent is social pressure. Don’t underestimate it, because this is what enabled the corporate state of the 1950s, using intense pro-capitalism/Christianity/Democracy/American* (read U.S.) and anti-Socialism/Atheism/Communism/non-American** rhetoric as its most visible expression. It’s also what made the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq possible, and even got the Shrub re-elected (no mean feat). It also results in people feeling shunned or threatened for writing about things they believe are right and wrong. Amanda Marcotte and Shakespeare’s Sister felt it, and not the pretty packaged version, either - more like the ugly side that comes out when people who refuse to think about why things are the way they are feel the Natural Order of Things is threatened.
"I was hired by the Edwards campaign for the skills and talents I bring to the table, and my willingness to work hard for what’s right. Unfortunately, Bill Donohue and his calvacade of right wing shills don’t respect that a mere woman like me could be hired for my skills..."

Lady, the only true talent you possess is when you are on your knees with your lips opened into a 1-1/2 inch diameter circle. Anybody, even a sentient boiled turnip, can fabricate profane nonsense. That is not a talent. Now, get that head bobbing back and forth, well, that is talent.

Um, Mr. Esparolini, just because the good bishops (who spent so much time covering up for the pedophiles in their ranks - or being pedophiles themselves) have outlawed questioning voices or even excommunicating Catholics doesn't mean those people can't still consider themselves Catholics. Why do you think we're losing so many Catholics through intermarriage, disgust, and other means? I stopped listening to those hypocrites long ago, and I am still a Catholic, no matter what you or they say. Perhaps it just boils down to the reality that some of us aren't going to let a bunch of pedophiliac hypocrites hijack our religion.

[...] So, while the mainstream media campaigns sling mud and dig up dirt and even focus that unpleasant spotlight at bloggers, these online communities within the Obama and Edward’s campaigns are busy organizing grassroot events and meet ups on line and locally….and don’t forget raising money: The Obama campaign says that over 3000 people have set up personal fund raising web pages.
[...] Amanda Marcotte of Pandagon has resigned from the John Edwards campaign after being smeared by Bill Donahue as being anti-Cathoic after a certain blogger started the frenzy after being unable to use a search function correctly. What made her an anti-Catholic bigot in Bill’s eyes? She hasn’t minced any words when it came to the Catholic church’s anti-women policies nor is she as respectful of religion as the religionists would have her be. Oh, and she cusses too. We gals ain’t supposed to do that, ya know? [...]

Amanda, I'm sorry that we live in a world in which hysterical bigots can out-shout voices of reason, but your fans are happy to have your unbridled voice back on home turf. Reading the above, I sincerely hope the visitors (politest term I could think of) grow bored soon and go away. I am reminded why I cannot read right-wing anything.

FYI, Amanda, "Catholics for a Free Choice" is no more a Catholic organization than Exxon is an environmentalist movement: CFFC was denounced and disowned as a fraud by the Catholic bishops over 15 years ago.

Moreover, Frances Kissling is no more Catholic than Osama bin Laden:

Under the RCC's Code of Canon Law she was excommunicated years ago.

[...] Apparently the Designated Asshole stepping up the the plate for the religious fundies is Bill Donohue of the Catholic League, having himself quite the busy week between this and trashing innocent bloggers. Quoth the putz himself*: “What’s next? The city’s own brand of clean syringes? Every illiterate in America already knows about the wonders of condoms. At a time when police and firemen are underpaid, is this really the best use of city money?” [...]

Wow. I just read through some of the posts here. Did I miss something? What I read was an exerpt from a review of "Children of Men" that questioned the need for Mary to be a virgin mother of Jesus rather than simply his mother. Why would that rile people up so much? Why does Mary have to be a virgin? I have ALWAYS questioned that and wondered what it said about how I was supposed to be as a woman in the world. I too am the Catholic mother of four. I've just never bought the idea that the Church honors women by holding up a Catholic ideal, teaching us that being a good Catholic woman translates to serving our man, etc., all while covering up the behavior of priests committing savage acts upon our children, whom we have entrusted to their care.

I'll keep reading the blog to see what I'm missing. Surely, all this vitriol can't be based on a woman questioning why Mary had to be a virgin to be the perfect mother.
