I know you all love these WND polls because the choices are so asinine. This one is entertaining. I feel the Rapture coming…
Why do you think there’s such antagonism against Christianity today?

Well, I could definitely agree that many of His so-called followers are out of this world.
Seriously, I wish more self-proclaimed Christians would actually remember that His “kingdom is not of this world.” All this raging need to use the power of the state to force people to follow Christianity is too little Gospels and too much Theodosius I.
And evidence we’re living in the “Last Days” is their answer for everything, including tsunamis. Yeah, dudes, when Christians were being used as torches at garden parties, most Christians agreed with John that the Last Days were near. When the Black Death killed up to two-thirds of the population of Europe, and bodies were piled everywhere, many Christians had the not-unreasonable thought that it was the End Times. Being prevented from beating your stinking homosexual neighbor to death in the name of Jesus is not “being persecuted.” The fact that Taliban-style Christianity is not the supreme law of the United States is not an indication that the Rapture is imminent. A hangnail does not qualify you for a handicapped parking space. Etc.
Favorite bumpersticker: “When the Rapture comes, can I have your stuff?”
Wow, pollster, lead the subjects much?
You know the worst part about this kind of bullshit internet polling and push-polling trends is that we’re going to grow a whole generations of “market researchers” without a freaking clue.
nolo:
I generally hate bumper stickers on principle, but I would put that one on my car without a second thought.
I like the one about “Christians have joined other groups claiming victim status.” Except, it overlooks the fact that Christians aren’t new to the game; they wrote the book on it.
There’s no question that Christians were a persecuted minority, oh, say, fifteen hundred years ago, but even after a thousand years of hegemony, many continue to cling to the role of victim as a core part of their identity.
The whole thing reminds me of a cartoon I saw years ago. Guy lying on a couch in a psychiatrist’s office. The psychiatrist is saying, “My nurse has an interesting theory about you, Mr. Jones. She thinks you’re just an asshole.”
Well, at least give them credit for offering choices like “Christians have just decided to join all the other groups claiming victim status.”
The responses get more reasonable and less popular as you move down the list…
Because hardly anyone respects a hypocrite. Jesus certainly does not.
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’”
I’m shocked that the most popular answer is the one I would have picked. Except for the hate part, since hating takes more energy than Christians are worth.
Can you say “martyr complex”? I knew you could.
I was thinking “persecution complex”. Same diff.

Actually, what the psychiatrist would write in his or her notes about the conversation with the nurse is:
Axis II: R/O 301.81 Narcissistic Personality Disorder
I only wish they weren’t of the world. Instead, they use religion as a marketing gimmick. Well, not all Christians, just the powerful ones. People only hate the powerful, hateful ones, like Pat Robertson. Christians who run homeless shelters and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity– the ones who really act the way Christ would approve of– are pretty popular.
Religion is what the common people see as true, the wise people see as false, and the rulers see as useful.

Actually, the ID number for the poll in the URL is off by one; here’s the link you wanted. (The poll you linked to is still relevant, however, as an example of the push polling Dorothy points out above.)
(Made a separate comment because the preview display can’t deal with multiple links in the same comment, at least not in separate paragraphs.)
Actually, their entire poll archive is relevant; WND has just about replaced Reader’s Digest as the microcosm of the reality-tunnel that believes (in the words of Joe Malik) that America has never fought an unjust war, that the hair of a seventh son of a seventh son cures warts, that anyone who gets rich must have done so through honesty and hard work, that a Jewish girl once got pregnant by a dove, and other superstitions (end paraphrase). For example, the four polls that follow the “If They Hate Me, They Will Hate You” poll linked to earlier: less than 10% of their readers copped to not reading the Bible and/or disbelief in biblical literalism, roughly two-thirds favor continuing the proposed boycott of Wal-Mart, 43.36% support Tom Tancredo as the GOP nominee for President in ‘08, and a whopping 61% agree with Tancredo that Bush wants to merge the US with Canada and Mexico.
Hew-mons scare me. Can I go live on a planet with intelligent life now, plzkthx?
