The first election they called tonight on NPR was Vermont. For Bernie Sanders. A socialist. But god forbid anyone point out that a socialist can win a Senate seat in a walk in America. Don’t want people to realize that running to the left on economic issues is a winning strategy in America.

And then they toss Santorum on his ass. I’m trying not to be too hopeful. Right now the only Democrat I kind of want to lose—Harold Ford—is falling behind. He’s such a sleazeball that I’m almost willing to let that seat go if it means a better Democrat next time around.

CNN just called it for Lieberman, and with 35% of Republicans and 26% Democrats. They’re pressuring Lieberman to switch to the Republicans on CNN. Assholes.

Right now, every state that’s voting on a marriage amendment appears to be fucking over the queers. i really do hate my fellow citizens sometimes.

  2. Blue Jean

And Harris has lost too. That makes two Shrub tools that have gone down. Can I do my little happy dance now?

  3. Would Bredesen be a better choice in Tennessee? I don’t know anything about him, but he’s popular as hell. It might be nice to see him take on Lamar Alexander.

  4. Ms Kate

Git Bumney is now bloviating on the local Boston news. Oh, Healy? I thought this was my chance to look presidential, not residential! I’ll name all the things I let the little girl sign then …

  5. Ms Kate

Oh gahd … now they are playing Boston’s “More than a feeling”

    BWWUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (SPLAT)

  6. CNN seems to call races awfully early and haphazardly. As of 9:24 p.m., they’re calling it for Lieberman though their own numbers show Lamont leading 47-44.

  7. MAJeff

Fuck Kerry Healey. She showed her true character with her campaign. She’s scum.

  8. MAJeff

    CNN calling RI for Whitehouse.

  9. Norah

    “Git Bumney”? Love it.

To chime in with my fellow MA voters:

Now that Patrick has it locked up, I’m pissed that CNN can’t make up it’s mind on question 1. Damn, I was in college before I realized that you could buy liquor at the grocery in almost every other stste in the Union.

  10. MAJeff

I’m actually proud of MA’s election of Patrick. Remember, Boston had some of the most violent anti-busing riots in the country in the 1970s. The Bay State has not been immune to racism. Patrick’s overwhelming victory is very heartening in that perspective.

Additionally, we elected our first female Attorney General tonight.

  11. MA, all the more reason that minority rights shouldn’t be up for majority vote.

  12. MAJeff

Well, Amanda, on Thursday our legislature will be sitting in Constitutional Convention to decide whether or not to send an amendment taking away our right to marry to the ballot. It only needs 50 of 200 legislators to approve it. then it needs to be approved by that slim margin again next session. If it gets those 50 votes both times, in 2008 voters in the Bay State will decide whether or not to take that right away from us.

  13. Misplaced Patriot

When I first saw those Kerry Healy ads about Deval Patrick defending a cop killer, I was cynical enough to think that would do it for Patrick. I’m so glad the state is better than that.

  14. MAJeff- “not immune to racism” is putting it pretty mildly. The Sox were the last team to integrate, if I’m not mistaken. Busing was instituted in Boston when it was precisely because civil rights activists correctly predicted violent backlash; they knew getting that kind of conflict on the news would mobilize more people than quietly integrating cities that were ready to peacefully integrate.

  15. Louise

Tryst Alert! Cutting to DC after the commercials…

Blue Jean, I’ll join ya in that dance, as soon as I find my other shoe and they play a different song… why THAT snoozer? Why not J. Geils “Whammer Jammer”? (not good for dancing, but kick-ass harp)

  16. Ms Kate

They are going to have to win over all the neighbors of gay couples who have come out since the marriage law changed, Jeff.

This is what the right has been fighting to avoid - the so-called “normalizing” of homosexuality. It has happened when people like my straight-laced churchgoing financial sector working neighbors bracketed by lesbian couples, being on respectful, lawn-mower loaning terms with them. When gays stuck to their gay neighborhoods and hid in the closet, they were far easier to demonize and stereotype and make all scary and shit. Much more difficult to do that when those sick perverts rescue your sick pet in the middle of the night, or those creepy homos wear the same sorts of clothes as you do and give you a lift when your car is in the shop.

  17. Blue Jean

Louise, I’ll put on REM’s “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” and we’ll kick out the jams. How’s that sound?

  18. Wren

Local Fox affiliate just announced Santorum has conceded. No surprise there, just immense ammounts of joy.

As a former VT resident, I’m proud. For folks who talk about packing it in and moving to Canada, I’d recommend stopping there first.

  19. MAJeff

Yeah, Ms Kate, but I also know what kind of campaign it’s going to be. FOF, FRC, CWA, et al will bring the hate to the Bay State and gay bashings will go up. We may win the election, but my guess is that people will die, or at a minimum bashings will go up. Count on it.

  20. Ms Kate

Blue Jean, I just heard that coming out of my son’s room and I had to laugh.

My parents in Portland, OR woke up with an earthquake (3.0, but almost directly underneath them) after two days of heavy rains.

    Mother Nature bats last.

  21. On the one hand, it looks as if Webb is slowly narrowing the gap. On the other, I don’t think he’s narrowing it quickly enough to be on top by the time there are results from 100% of precincts.

Chances are Lieberman is going to win, but Lamont is still fairly close to him.

  22. Ms Kate

It is a hopeful sign, however, that the talk radio frat boy bullshit of Healyum was roundly rejected. Maybe that’s just standard issue insular rejection of outsiders and outsider tactics, but that civility and turn-off to meaningless vicious nastiness may carry over, particularly with Deval at the helm.

Acceptance of gay couples is on the rise in MA last I heard, for the very reasons I mentioned. Hold that thought.

  23. Do you know the gay marriage poll numbers in Massachusetts, Ms. Kate?

  24. MAJeff

My recollection of the most recent Suffolk University Poll (Aug or Sept) is that marriage had around 45%, while civil unions increased it up to the 60-70% range. The problem is that the amendment being considered says nothing about CUs. It only takes away the right to marriage (the SJC decision in Goodridge would probably require some kind of equal treatment, but that would require a new lawsuit.)

The amendment under consideration would allow those folks who have already married to stay married but would allow no further marriages of same-sex couples.

  25. MAJeff

I should add that the Suffolk poll was incredibly poorly worded—it didn’t accurately reflect what is being considered by the legislature.

  26. Louise

To quote my fave Cartman- KICKASS….(re:REM) Although I’m starting to think we’ll have to dance ’til dawn to get all real results and not just projections.

I’ve had married gay neighbors and coworkers in Baltimore, Austin, and here in Maine. Funny- it never has impacted my marriage one iota! Screw this “civil union” cowardice- let any and all consenting adults live their own happy lives and marry (Monty Python voice)- in a very REAL and LEGALLY BINDING SENSE if they want. (my rant for the night)

  27. Blue Jean

LOL, Ms. Kate! Your son has good taste. :-)

    Louise,

That’s OK–we’ll have time to listen to all our faves that way. Especially since we’ve just won the House! FIRST WOMAN SPEAKER!!!! YAY!!!

  28. Bertson

CNN’s called “No” on the SD abortion ban.

  29. Blue Jean

Off to bed now. Y’all can dance to the music here. (Might have to go through Google first to get the graphics). Hope Diebold doesn’t steal anything while I’m gone.

  30. Louise

Sorry, Blue Jean, 8 year old refused to snooze and had to cut out… got up at 5:30 and we FLIPPED here! High fives over first cup of coffee. Husband decided to blow off work (when you’re self-employed, you can do that) and we’re spending a rainy day gleaning info. I’ll drag out the beater truck and fill the back with signs for recycling tomorrow.

Good for Pelosi! Having her break that particular glass ceiling can only be a good thing and hopefully will lead to more. I may TiVo Dubya later on…

  31. Louise

But I think the song of the day should be Ray Charles’ “Hit The Road, Jack”…been running through my head for a bit.

  32. SamChevre

Are you sure you aren’t mixing up Harold Ford Sr (who is quite a sleazeball) with his son, who was runnin for Senate. In my impression, Harold Ford Jr is pretty clean.

  33. Blue Jean

LOL! Sounds like you’ve got a fun day planned, Louise. I’ve been in bed with the flu, but the election news has made me feel better.

Yeah, “Hit The Road, Jack” is a great tune. Sha Na Na, Hey, Hey, Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye” (by Steam if you’re a Baby Boomer. by Bananarama or the Nylons if you’re not) is the song that keeps running through my mind.
