I know this is an old thread, but I just read it today and felt like adding something. The heart of this is just the same old typical confusion of ignorants between depicting and endorsing. For some reason, there is a whole segment of society who just can't figure out that an artist can depict something without endorsing it.

[...] Between the derb’s creepy reading of Lolita, the 50 top conservative rock songs (assuming you ignore 95% of all the lyrics and/or all of a band’s demonstrated politics, of course), and this brutual misinterpretation of a musical tale so simple a child grasps it, I think the right wingers are no longer allowed to participate in discussions of art.
Meghan Cox (America's Worst Mother) refers to Derb as "The Great Derbyshire." I wonder if she lets her kids go to The Great One's house for sleepovers.

Surely if a man has sex with a girl under the age of consent, this is rape whether she consented or not? So the crime of rape is actually two different things: it is either sex with a girl under the age of consent, or it is sex with a girl or woman over the age of consent when she did not agree to have sex.

For this reason, if you are comparing the incidence of rape at different ages, you can only validly compare the incidence at different ages *over* the age of consent, or the incidence at different ages *under* the age of consent. Otherwise you are comparing two different crimes.

As for Derbyshire's son and the fighting incident, some thoughts:

1 - How he expressed himself makes him a prize ass. Rolling in a wish to throw punches may be natural sometimes, but to lay out the thoughts is silly and - worse, no doubt, from a Derbyshire viewpoint - ungentlemanly.

2 - He did a followup (I don't have the link) where he explains what happens: basically he backed up the school's disciplining of his son.

3 - He actually says something that I agree with (!): A loathing of therapy-speak. I despise it too, having seen it used far, far too often as:
(a) a means of ensuring that one never gets to the point at issue, revolving around feelings and process, avoiding ugly things like solutions and plans;
(b) a means of nasty powerplays for control, revelled in by the manipulative.

4 - He should be bloody grateful that the school's first reaction was to just have the kid(s) punished and inform the parents. Many schools nowdays bring in the police and juvenile charges are laid, leaving it to the courts to sort out. I reflect with discomfort on a nasty fight that I had in Grade 5, where a Grade 6 kid choked me and I slammed him with a judo throw. I've never been in a fight since and the reformed bully went on to a much quieter personality and a career in sciences. I shudder to think what would have happened if it had ended up in "smurf court".

charlie: Why do we demand that 17 yr olds, who through almost all of human history would be adult and responsible members of our society, be helpless infants, and ‘daddy knows best’?

Because the prevailing -- and advancing -- ultraconservative culture in America infantalizes all people, demanding that active citizens become childlike subjects. It's just that the age bar for being permitted to think for yourself is being adjusted upwards and upwards and upwards, but not explicitly mentioned.

Blue Jean, it goes further back than that: Look at Beauty and the Beast.

LOL. That's true, Anne. But if you disegard the Beast's looks (and his homicidal tendencies regarding his roses), he had a lot going for him--he had wit, charm, intelligence, wealth, etc. Plus, once Beauty agreed to marry him, he turned into a handsome prince, so even his looks weren't a problem.

However, as Garnet pointed out, the usual sitcom husband doesn't have wit, charm, intelligence, etc. And when Beauty marries him, he doesn't change to a handsome prince. He just gets fat.

Me, I think it's because sitcoms are targeted toward coach potatoes who are sitting at home,
watching TV. They like to think they'll end up with cute chicks if they made the effort. Not so, I'm afraid.

Oh, well, yes, men, most men. Only men, though. Men like perkiness, women are all about flaccidity. Men like firmness, women prefer the slackness of a beer gut. Old flesh is what triggers our brain-stems. Sometimes we women forget that we’re different this way, but there’s always a man around to explain it to us.

You will note that I, in my magificent arrogance, allow myself to speak for all men everywhere on the topic of sex. This is because I have (a) a penis and (b) incredible chutzpah.

Not incredible enough, however, to speak on behalf of all women everywhere on the subject of sex. I have enough problems negotiating and navigating the subject with individual members of the species.
