Norbizness has a song on his list I saw a man doing interpretative Christian dance to once on 6th Street. Guess which song it is!

Our leader’s randomizer wants her to dance. Mine is a spaz, as usual.

1) “Mr Grieves”–TV on the Radio. 9/10, for simply putting out song after song that skirts on the edge of strange but always being relentlessly cool.
2) “Red Roses”–Betty Harris. 7/10, get out of you chair and dance like an ass.
3) “All Around the World”–Titus Turner. 8/10, chill and super groovy version of this song.
4) “Chinese Rocks”–Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers. 8/10, punk classic that is not permanently stuck in my head. (Everything is in the pawn shop!)
5) “Chain of Fools”–Aretha Franklin. 9/10, especially since it’s a live version with some really cool guitar work.
6) “Love Me Do”–Sandie Shaw. 3/10, this is a really goofy lounge cover, but I don’t think I like it at all.
7) “Monster Blues”–Invisible Eyes. 9/10, this is what I want out of garage rock–bust out the keyboards early, have a groove that will cause the audience at a live show to rock out as one, waving cigarettes in the air with so much glee they actually let the entire things burn down without dragging except the once during the blessedly brief guitar solor. Makes me want to slap on a miniskirt and a cute hat and paint the town red.
8) “Circles”–Pop Art Toasters. 5/10, not so much.
9) “Tattoo Vampire”–Blue Oyster Cult. 2/10, though I imagine in a year they’ll be the band all the IMSes are saying they loved all along. But this song blows. Skipping it.
10) “I Fought the Law”–Bobby Fuller Four. 6/10, extra point for being from El Paso, the city your blogger also had the misfortune to enter the world in.

6.6 out of ten. Started strong and petered out. I give this incident a 8/10, and would have been a 10/10 if the members of Creed and 311 got into a fight to the death.

  1. Karl the Idiot

Here I am, first again, just by chance, serious.

    1) “Tunnel” - Mars (3/10: totally unlistenable. Only gets points because apparently the ‘No Wave’ movement was/is cool. This sucks so hard. Damn)
    2) “Raunchy” - Booker T. And The M.G.’s (6/10 pretty laid back, which is not really what I’m looking for in my BT and MG’s, but still, ipso facto, it’s cool)
    3) “Planet Caravan” - Black Sabbath (6/10 okay, BS psychadelic, which is sort of uncool, but it’s from just about the best album ever made, and you really need it, I understand, if you’re stoned and listening to the whole thing)
    4) “Canine Ecstacy” - Marumari (3/10 I understand ‘electronic’ music is cool in some places, but it sounds likes an overpriced Manhattan cocktail joint to me)
    5) “Atlanta Strut” -Blind Willie McTell (6/10 pretty sweet, but I’m docking myself points because I don’t really know it well enough to claim it as my own)
    6) “Roll And Tumble” - Joe Callicot (10/10 I love this fuckin album)
    7) “1-2″ - Brian Eno (8/10 Okay, Music for Airports is just cool, but maybe too cool to be really cool)
    8) “The First Cut Is The Deepest” - The Koobas (7/10 I like this song a lot, but I hate the opening 10 seconds or so. I understand it’s been covered recently)
    9) “Here” - Pavement (7/10 also love this song, but c’mon, it can’t be that cool, now, can it?)
    10) “Barbed Wire Love”- Stiff Little Fingers (7/10 if it weren’t so self-consciously punk and didn’t go on so long, it’d be higher, but goddamn is this fun: it gets two points just for the handclaps at the end)

    Really scored okay tonight!

  2. Jedmunds

“Guess which song it is! ”

Funny guesses: The RATM or the Neu!

But seriously, it’s gotta be that goddamned rage-inducing irish band.

  3. Phasers on “Kill Bono”.

  4. Where is Auguste talking about how Mr. Grieves is a cover. He nailed me on that earlier.

  5. Quarterican

I’ve heard that the TV on the Radio cover of “Mr. Grieves” is very very different from the original, which makes me very curious to hear it. I’m generally reluctant to make objective-esque statements about what I think is a mostly subjective field, but since I already joined the McCartney schlock-pile in the other thread, I’ll say that if anyone here hasn’t heard the original, they should go buy Doolittle by the Pixies right now, because “Mr. Grieves” is only one of the great songs on one of the best albums ever ever ever; Surfer Rosa ain’t got nothing on Doolittle. (And while I’m slipping my neck out, I’ll add this: I seem to share a lot of musical common ground with Amanda and others here, but goddamnit, I like [most] U2. There, I said it. Just trying to get some diversity in among the Bono-bashing.)

  6. cgiglia42

    random ten already in progress:

    1) Ted Leo & The Pharmacists: Tell Balgeary, Balgury is Dead - 7/10. Respect for Mr. Leo.
    2) Why? - Yo Yo Bye Bye. 8/10 “I’m fuckin’ cold like a DQ Blizzard!” An extra point for being a making potentially asinine lyrics sound profound.
    3) Belle & Sebastian - Travelling Light - 4/10. Please stop letting other people write the songs Stuart.
    4) The Wedding Present - Give My Love To Kevin - 6/10. A bit watered down from their usual amazing output
    5) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Restless Sinner - 5/10 Doesn’t really go anywhere, but good still. I’m glad they stopped ripping off the Jesus & Mary Chain long enough to steal some blues licks.
    6) The Lucksmiths - The Chapter In Your Life Entitled San Francisco - 8/10. Bonus points for mentioning ye olde birthplace.
    7) Madvillain - The Illest Villain - 3/10. Not really a song…fucking intros. Good samples and nice oration though.
    8) The Ramones - Do You Remember Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio? - 7/10 Classic, but not THAT classic.
    9) Nick Cave - Wanted Man - 9/10. Nick Cave, why did you ever go Christian? You were so badASS.
    10) Uncle Tupelo - Fatal Wound - 6/10. I completely zoned this song out.

6.3 out of 10. Way way too average.

  7. cgiglia42

yeah, that cover of Mr. Grieves is really really good. Completely a capella, which is nice because I hate when bands do straight, by the books covers.

  8. Grumpy

    1) David Bowie - “Beauty and the Beast”
    2) Geinoh Yamashirogumi - “Mutation” from AKIRA
    3) James Horner - “Facehuggers” from ALIENS
    4) Martin Denny - “Song of the Bayou”
    5) Queen - “I Want It All”
    6) Spinal Tap - “Sex Farm”
    7) Harry Belafonte - “Day-O”
    8) OC Supertones - “Shanghai Surf”
    9) Combustible Edison - “Junglero”
    10) Peter Gabriel - “Sledgehammer”

Have you ever considered doing a post that’s a fusion of Friday Random Ten and the Insufferable Music Snob? To wit, non-randomly choose a suite of ten tracks that prove how unbearably hip you are.

  9. Tony the Pony

  10. c-minus

I’d like to point out that I was coming up with BOC on my Friday Random Tens for a full month before our hostess did. That’d be a more noteworthy achievement if there were any BOC song that rated more than 4/10 on the coolness meter. Anyway,

    1. “Capriccio #24,” Ilan Ashkenazi. Tough call. On the one hand, it’s obscure, and it’s based upon a composition by Paganini, the Robert Johnson of classical music. On the other hand, Ashkenazi is basically the Israeli Joe Satriani. Call it 4/10.
    2. “Baba O’Reilly,” The Who. Quite possibly the greatest rock song ever. Unfortunately, no song that popular can really be cool. 3/10.
    3. “Blackstairs,” Clannad. I understand that once you stake an IMS through the heart, you have to put a Clannad CD in their mouth to make sure they stay dead. 1/10.
    4. “Blank Baby,” The Presidents Of The United States. They might be the last high-profile Seattle sound band intact and not sold out. But that’s because they’re just a bunch of geeks. 3/10.
    5. “Stranger Than Fiction,” moe. Kind of bluesy roots rock from a near-miss band. Reasonably cool, I guess. 6/10.
    6. “It’s Alright,” Pet Shop Boys. Oh, wait. It’s Pet Shop Boys you use to kill an IMS. Clannad is for when you want to open a store selling crystals. 1/10.
    7. “Toxic Toast,” The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The Bosstones are mostly not held responsible for the ska-punk atrocities that followed in their wake. Mostly. 5/10.
    8. “Wrapped Around Your Finger,” The Police. Even despite name-checking Scylla and Charybdis, it’s just too well-known to be cool. 3/10.
    9. “Rains On Me,” Tom Waits. How did this get here? It’s actually cool. 10/10, thanks to a bonus point for proceeds going to the West Memphis Three.
    10. “Last,” Nine Inch Nails. I understand the U.S. Department of Cool uses Broken as a control when calculating USRDAOC, the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance Of Cool. 5/10.

4.1 of 10. It’s amazing what Tom Waits can do, isn’t it?

  11. Auguste

Mr. Grieves is a cover. Am I late?

Seriously, Doolittle is the best album of all time, but TV on the Radio is a fantastic, fantastic band and that’s one of the top covers ever, IMHO. I really like “Ambulance”, their other acappella standout.

    1. Baby C’mon - Stephen Malkmus
    2. Flute Song - Cranes
    3. The Calendar Hung Itself - Bright Eyes
    4. This is How It’s Done - Sparrow
    5. (Do Not Feed The) Oyster - Stephen Malkmus (Don’t blame me, blame Amarok. One of three Malkmus tunes I own.)
    6. Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect - The Decemberists
    7. I’ve Been Lost - +/-
    8. Naked As We Came - Iron & Wine
    9. When You Go Out - I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness
    10. I Love You Mary Jane - Cypress Hill feat. Sonic Youth

No self-audit, because my taste in music is unimpeachable. Actually, 3hive’s taste in music is unimpeachable, which is basically where all of my mp3s on my home computer come through.

Bonus Track: Out to Get Me - Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start

    Best band name ever.

  12. Grunt

Playing dirty pool, Amanda, criticizing El Paso. Tsk, tsk. Being born in El Paso gives you one of the best of all possible naturalborn rights: you have the right to wear cowboy boots anywhere & anytime because you were born in the cowboy boot capitol of the world! …and I think you do likes the bootses…

  13. Mnemosyne

    1. “The Vampires of New York” - Marcy Playground
    2. “The Man with the Dogs” - Dead Kennedys
    3. “Opening Night (Reprise)” - From The Producers
    4. “After Midnight” - Eric Clapton
    5. “Not an Addict” - K’s Choice
    6. “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” - The Jackson 5
    7. “Can’t Get There From Here” - R.E.M.
    8. “You Can Be Loud As The Hell You Want (When You’re Makin’ Love)” - From Avenue Q
    9. “Hand in Glove” - The Smiths
    10. “Los Angeles” - Frank Black

  14. Sarcastro

Movin to the city limit, ah gettin jiggy with it.

    1. “Ain’t Superstitious” - Howlin’ Wolf 7/10, typin’ to the beat’s gotta mean somethin’.
    2. “Babylon” - David Gray 3/10, No idea who this is. Kinda want’s to be Paul Simon. But isn’t.
    3. “Athelete Cured” - The Fall 8/10, I don’t care what anyone says. Brix-era Fall fucking smokes.
    4. “The Unheard Music” - X 7/10, This version being sans Billy Zoom docks it 2 points.
    5. “The Only Mistake” - Joy Division 3/10, Good song in the right situation… but I’m neither suicidaly depressed nor 16.
    6. “Automatically Sunshine” - The Supremes 7/10, This song is slinky. I like.
    7. “Love Me I’m A Liberal” - Jello Biafra & Mojo Nixon 5/10, You’d think it would be better. I mean… Jello! Mojo!
    8. “Career Opportunities” - The Clash 5/10, Kids version off of Sandanista. Cute for a bit.
    9. “Wear Yo Hat (Buried And Bald)” - NWH 7/10, It’s sunny outside, better put some shit on!
    10. “Reuben” - Flatt & Scruggs 6/10, Good tune but it never really breaks loose. Just noodling really.

  15. Lux Fiat

    1. “Bonus,” Tom Waits, Real Gone

    2. “Kronic (Eath with Yer Chopstix),” Binary Riot Squad
    3. “Let Them Eat Ice Cream,” The KLF, Justified & Ancient
    4. “The Easy Spell,” Mos Def, The New Danger
    5. “Fall Down,” Toad the Wet Sprocket, Dulcinea
    6. “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” Nina Simone, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood
    7. “Comin’ Home,” Hum, Downward Is Heavenward
    8. “Don’t I Know,” Sinead Lohan, No Mermaid
    9. “Ten in 2010,” Bad Religion, The Grey Race
    10. “Welcome,” Outhouse, Welcome

I wonder if iTunes has become infected with whatever it is that makes my iPod play “Ten in 2010″ in like every damn shuffle.

  16. Indy

1969- Iggy and the Stooges 7/10- I 1969- Iggy and the Stooges 7/10- I <3 iggy pop, but this song is kinda annoying.

Virginia- Gin Blossoms 6/10 - You know how thrift stores have a whole rack of flannel shirts fadeing towards mud-colored, but still soft and warm? That’s the Gin Blossoms.

Tahitian Moon - Jane’s Addiction 7/10 - ode to debauchery, loved it in high school.

Shit Towne- Live 5/10 Don’t know where i got this from.

Ozean Und Brandung- Einsturzende Neubauten 6/10- Weird industrial german noises. Variable.

The Rare Ould Times- Flogging Molly 8/10 yeah.

Expecting- White Stripes. 6/10. I wonder how much I’ll like this band in five years. Amazing how much of their lyrics came from “Citizen Kaine” dialouge.

King of Comedy- R.E.M. 7/10- bubbling up from the past.

Hittin’ on Nothing- Southern Culture on the Skids- 7/10 Fun live. They throw fried chicken at you while singing “Eight Peice Box”

Complex Vocalizations- Peterson Field Guides’ “Birding by Ear”. 10/10. Bobolinks, goldfinches, House Wrens. random noodling from birds. Bootlegged from an ornithology class lab section I had in college. Couldn’t identify any of these to save my life.

  17. Indy, Tahitian Moon is Porno for Pyros. Tsk Tsk.

    :)

  18. Thlayli

“Chinese Rocks”–Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers.

“Somebody called me on the phone/They said hey, is Dee Dee home?”

I should do a playlist of heroin songs sometime. Except I would have to listen to “Under the Bridge”, which sucks.

    “I Fought the Law”–Bobby Fuller Four. 6/10

The Clash version would be worth at least another point.

  19. Surely you have seen the post where Scott Stapp gets punk’d by a group of kids at Denny’s. With pictures.

    Yeah, it’s that good.

  20. 311 was one of those bands that i used to love back in high school. shit, the first time i ever got stoned was at one of their concerts. i was pretty young, and not smoking, but when they play a song like “who’s got the herb” in a place like convention hall, the air gets rarified, as they say.
it’s been awhile since i’ve listened to them, and their cover of “lovesong” wasn’t so good, but i’d have to say reading about them kicking scott stapp’s ass makes me proud.

however, my first thought was “scott stapp does something besides oil his chest and beat his wife?” then i remembered he also wears leather pants.

  21. Dr. Locrian

“scott stapp does something besides oil his chest and beat his wife?” then i remembered he also wears leather pants.”

Oh man. That made my day, mil0. There is no greater evil in the rock world than Scott Stapp. Did he invent that “I’m being crucified in the rain but thank Jesus I can still dry hump the air” Christian rock posturing? It’s officially more annoying than obligatory lighter waving and goat horn signs.

Now imagine him in that position, rain beading on his oiled chest hair, declaring in the voice of a trolly little Moses on Sinai, “311, I am ready to fight.”

Then he gets the buckdown from a bunch of guys in 420 t-shirts.

Then I sigh, and thank the Intelligent Designer that He gave humans the capacity for imagination.

Being born in El Paso gives you one of the best of all possible naturalborn rights: you have the right to wear cowboy boots anywhere & anytime because you were born in the cowboy boot capitol of the world! …and I think you do likes the bootses…

Everyone from El Paso hates El Paso. And loves the food. It’s the law.

But yeah, I wear cowboy boots periodically. I’ve got a twofer right, since I’ve lived in Austin for more than a decade. We get to wear cowboy boots and still look urban and hip. That said, for the love of god, when will girls stop wearing them with miniskirts? That fashion needs to die. I were them with 501s. Sometimes my suede jeans. But that’s it.

  25. Lorenzo

    I guess I’ll play!

Daft Punk - “Short Circuit.” 7/10. Amusing kinda disco riff.

G-Zone (Prezioso & Marvin Remix) - “Despre Tine.” 5/10. Not a bad song from my sole yearly concession to Italian club music (DJ Parade).

Smashing Pumpkins - “Where Boys Fear to Tread.” 5/10. Only decent, though SP deserves commendations for being one of the only bands that I liked in high school that I still like.

VNV Nation - “Colours of Rain” 8/10. Who knew I’d like wierd industrial EBM this much? I didn’t until I bought this album!

Bjork - “Big Time Sensuality” 6/10. Pretty good but there are much better songs on her greatest hits album.

KMFDM - “Every Day’s a Good Day” 10/10. Wile it’s almost a certainty that at least one KMFDM song will appear on any random playlist given how much of their music I will have, this is my favorite song off of Hau Ruck for its complexity (musically).

PPK - “Resurrection” 2/10. One of my least favorite songs on Perfecto The Club.

Melissa Auf Der Mar - “Would if I Could”. 6/10. Just not feeling it that much.

Ministry - “So What” 9/10. One of my favorite songs off of The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste especially for its back and forth pacing between fast/loud and slow/soft.

Nellie McKay - “The Dog Song” ?/10. Wierd. Really Wierd. Almost kinda scary.

Overall. 4/10. Meh, not representative at all. Too many songs that I don’t feel that much.

    1. Boyo - Billy Pilgrim
    2. After I Say I’m Sorry - Ella Fitzgerald
    3. They Can’t Take That Away From Me - Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald
    4. Oh Susanna - The Be Good Tanyas
    5. Underdog - The Murmurs
    6. Jelly, Jelly - Wynton Marsalis Big Band
    7. It’s Alright - Van Morrison
    8. Deed I Do - Chet Atkins & Les Paul
    9. Take the Long Way - Po Girl
    10. La Cieguita - Carlos Gardel
    11. Corrina - Taj Mahal

Good, not great. Though I am giving myself bonus points for the Carlos Gardel.

  26. SalHepatica

Only 6/10 for “I Fought the Law” by the Bobby Fuller Four? You’re flirting with having your IMS credentials lifted.
